  • Updated Review
Updated Review: Not minutes after I wrote the review below I fired up Warframe to do some more testing in game and about 2 minutes in the DAC power cycled. Then it power cycled again - and again... I unplugged the USB cable (between DAC and PC) and plugged back in - powered back up. a couple minutes later it did it again - after a little more investigation the DAC just died and won't power up anymore. So I'll be returning the headset. Changing Review from 4 Stars to 2 - if you get one of these refurbs that works - it will be fantastic, but there is obviously not good quality control on the refurbs for this device. Below is the original review after about 2 hours testing: The box it came in was not original, which i'm fine with. There was also zero documentation, also fine with - as it's easy to get online. I plugged it into my PC and... nothing. The DAC would not power up, wasn't being detected, etc. After some trial and error I switched the included Micro USB (GameDAC to PC Cable) out for a high quality one I already owned and everything worked perfectly from there. Pros: This is my 4th Steel Series device - second headset. I have the wireless Arctic Pro Wireless as well. I feel these sound a little bit better in game mode - but i might be deluding myself. If you have a high res audio source for music you can put the DAC in "High Res" mode (you will need to make sure your adapter settings in windows are at 96KHz to get max performance) This limits it to Stereo (expected) but also opens it up to using Dolby Atmos for Headphones if you have it. Thee is a possible issue there though. Not really needed though. There is a noticeable improvement in music IF you are using a high res Lossless track (like Amazon Music HD (added subscription cost). If you are using lower quality tracks like Spotify etc - you probably won't notice a difference. Cons: The bad USB cable is an obvious one, but overall I have never been a fan of Steel Series cables - for what I am paying, whether it's a mouse, KB or Headset, I feel like I should be getting a high quality braided sheath instead of a standard (in most cases) or sub par silicone sheathed cable (in this case). Additionally, if you have a newer gen Samsung or Apple Phone that doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack the included port for plugging in your phone to the DAC is worthless (along w/ the little adapter cable - if you have to have a phone connection and you have a newer phone - you should look at the wireless version which uses a bluetooth connection for a secondary audio source - whether it's a phone or a second laptop/tablet etc..) Additionally, Steel Series chose to use a custom interface for the DAC -> Headphone cable - so you can only ever use the DAC w/ this headset, and this headset w/ the DAC. Not a huge issue - but again - wish the cable was better quality. (technically it serves it's purpose and works just fine.) Overall: For a renewed/refurbished product - i can't find any blemishes or imperfections outside the initial bad cable. They sound fantastic and are significantly cheaper than buying it new. It's a purchase I think I would make again. I have not found a better gaming headset EVER than this one and it's wireless companion. (*quick note - the wireless headset is almost identical to this one except obviously it uses batteries and has no RGB - it has the same speaker drivers, impedence, harmonic distortion etc.. as this headset. The difference here is the GameDac which provides a more robust analog signal/dedicated hardware decoding. While the wireless version still sounds amazing - don't confuse it's little black box for a DAC - it's not - it's a Transmission hub.) ... show more

  • Not sure what the hype is about but still a good headset with a few harmful flaws
Overall, great sound with a wonderful DAC controller, but falls short in a few areas such as the microphone, cables, and comfort. Pros: -Sound is great. I'm not really an audiophile but I appreciate good sound quality for gaming, movies, music, and videos. -I actually love the DAC interface, simplicity, and usability, however I didn't fully get the game sounds/voice channel separation feature to work properly but I'll attribute to user error -The DAC also has some useful inputs and outputs like -The DAC controller is also great quality and I love it -The SteelSeries Engine 3 software configuration with this headset seems to work well and has useful configs -The design is simple, clean, and attractive, especially the RGB rings around the ears and on the mic (customization is a plus too) Cons: I'm not really picky so these are actually major gripes to me. -The cables used are kinda standard but for a $250 headset, I expected either thicker or braided cables -Cables continued, they use proprietary connectors so it's not grab and go, but does come with a 3.5mm converter for use with say, a smart phone -My ears hurt after a while. I can use my old headsets for hours and hours but this hurts a bit after 3-4ish hours and I have a relatively small head. I have to adjust so they don't hurt but still eventually start to again -The headband isn't every adjustable. Again with the small head, but the band is in the max position. It uses an elastic band that frankly doesn't make sense on how to adjust. -The mic seems pretty sensitive honestly even adjusting it via the SteelSeries Engine 3 and Windows audio control panel, considering I haven't had any issue with my Astros, and I have a Cherry MX Blue mechanical keyboard (clicky and loud, yeah that's my fault) as well as prefer open mic, this isn't a good combo (however my argument is I didn't have this issue with my Astros, but may not be a problem with other setups. Other thoughts/notes: I've had a variety of headsets starting with the Tritton AX720, Turtle Beach X11 and DX11 alike, Turtle Beach PX5, Astros A40 + MixAmp Pro (circa 2014), the Astros A40 TR + MixAmp Pro (circa 2019), Turtle Beach X42, Logitech G930, and these Steel Series Arctis Pro + DAC, and I'd say although not all are a fair comparison, these are my 2nd favorite overall, 2nd to my Astros A40 (c. 2014). The comfort and mic sensitivity are killers but otherwise it's a great headset considering I got it Amazon Recertified for about $160. I'm going to use these at the expense of my ear comfort with caution as to how loudly I type until something better comes along. I'd use my 2019 Astros which I also love but I got some complaints about the mic quality (not sensitivity). ... show more

  • Factory faulty wiring, small and sweaty - I suggest not ever getting these **UPDATE FIXED**
Where to start with the dissapointment? How about at the most broken aspects first: 1-- The microphone has to be under 2mm, or better yet touching your face for anyone to hear you, when 3-4mm away, no one can hear you. I boosted the mic in the app, and in windows with no luck. When I got a 3rd party app to boost it further, it raised the line level buzz so high the mic was always hot. 2-- When the mic is muted if you are listening to something on the headset it bleeds over and sends the signal out as if you were streaming to everyone in the party. This happens consistently. 3-- Small and uncomfortable top arch. I am no giant, but having the metal sit on my head is uncomfortable, and it can't be raised any higher. I have no clue why these don't fit but my astros are only 1/2 way adjusted. 4-- Sweaty. These keep your ears hot and sweaty no matter what. It isn't' too bad, but when I put on the astros they are immediately cooler and dryer. The sound is good though, but all things considered, but due to the mute/mic/size issues I wish I never would have got these since they fail so bad at being a communications device. ******************************************* UPDATE I tore apart the microphone boom and re-soldered the wires to the microphone and it fixed the issue. Ends up that the microphone was not soldered correctly from the factory. ... show more
