Features

  • Adjustable - The vials are adjustable to a positive setting. It can be adjusted by turning the knurled knob on the side of the level, making it easy for quick leveling tasks.
  • Durable Fine Finish - The base is made from cast iron and is precision-machined on the reference surface to increase durability. The vial is housed in a satin finished brass tube with a friction-fit closing cover to prevent breakage.
  • Accurate and Precise - With the cross test vial, it is possible to simultaneously level in both directions. This prevents inaccuracies in the main vial reading caused by canting the level sidewise on round work.
  • Ergonomic - The base of the levels features an involute groove between the bearing flats for accurate seating on round work. This groove has a special involute design, permitting better centering and greater capacity to handle larger rounds.
  • The Standard for Excellence - Proudly made in the USA, Starrett combines over 140 years of American heritage and innovation with globally sourced materials to deliver exceptional quality tools and products.

Description

The Starrett 98-6 precision machinists’ level is 6 inches long and has a graduation (also called sensitivity) of 0.42 mm/m, or 80-90 seconds. The level has two vials to provide accurate results. The main vial is ground and graduated with five lines and adjustable to a positive setting. A second cross-test vial allows measurements from two directions at once. An involute groove runs the entire length of the level base, and provides a reliable seat for round work, such as leveling pipes or shafting. The base is made of machined cast iron for increased durability, and the glass vial is housed in a brass tube with a friction-fit closing to prevent breakage. H is height, the vertical distance from the lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back. Levels are instruments that are used to determine the true horizontal or vertical plane of a surface. The most common type of level is the spirit level, or bubble level. Spirit levels have a liquid- filled, bowed tube (also called a vial) with a bubble that moves when slight adjustments are made to the level. When the bubble settles between marked points on the vial, it indicates that a surface is horizontally or vertically straight. Levels can have one or more vials to determine the horizontal plane, the vertical plane, or various points between, such as a 45-degree angle, simultaneously. Some levels include a laser line indicator that projects a horizontal or vertical beam on a surface. Bullseye levels, or surface levels, are circular, flat-bottomed spirit levels that determine whether a surface plane is level. Machinists’ levels are made of metal and have surfaces designed specifically for rugged use in a machine shop or tool room. Levels can range from highly-complex and accurate machines, such as those used in the surveying and construction industry, to precision instruments used in carpentry and other building trades, to simple, pocket-sized devices for do- it-yourself projects. The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology, and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company was founded in 1880 and is headquartered in Athol, MA. The Starrett 6-Inch Precision Machinist's Level has ground and graduated main vials and includes a cross test vial. The base of the level features an involute groove running the length of the base that provides a reliable seat for round work. The 6-inch main level vials have gradations that are approximately 80-90 seconds or .005 inches per foot. The level comes backed with a 1-year manufacturer's warranty. P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); From the Manufacturer Starrett Machinists Levels have ground and graduated main vials and include a cross test vial. The base of the levels feature an involute groove running the length of the base providing a reliable seat for round work. The 6" main level vials have graduations that are approximately 80 - 90 seconds or .005" per foot. To guarantee extreme accuracy, the length of your level should not be longer that the work you are leveling. See more

  • Amazing precision!
Size: 12" Style: Without Case
If you thought a good hardware store level was precise, think again. I needed this to level out the platen on my wide format printer, we’re talking about fractions of a mm tolerance that were causing the print carriage to rub. After using steel thickness gauges to level everything out, we were still getting a slight bit of blur across the travel. Bring in a $300 level I never knew I needed. First, you have to calibrate this yourself. Look up some videos and find a VERY stable table or just go straight to the concrete like I did, just make sure the floor is clean and there is no lose debris. Place some tape marks and take your time alternating directions. Once calibrated, you’ll be able to capture the slightest inaccuracies. 0.0002” per foot tolerance is no joke. We were able to plum up the platen in no time and fix the detail issue with the printer. Life saver! Would have never been able to achieve the same results using an ordinary level, not even close. It’s expensive for what it is, but everything about it is precision machined and the glass vial is insanely sensitive. The 12” version I purchased actually comes with 3 total levels. I knew it had an extra one on the front for a second axis, but it also has another for a 3rd axis located in the middle where the finger holes are. At this price and sensitivity, I wish it came with a case. It’s pretty robust and the main vial has a cover, but I’d like to give it some extra protection anyway. ... show more

  • Easy to calibrate!!!
Size: 6" Style: Without Case
Awesome level. Calibration is very easy when compared to the cheaper levels. 5-10 minutes and it was dead on.

  • Very accurate

There are several great machinist tool manufacturers around, Starrett is one. This is a very accurate level.

  • Great Product. Horrible Shipping. Great Product. Horrible Shipping.
Size: 12" Style: Without Case
This equipment is probably the best I have used. I have people I work with that own it so I have some experience using it and wanted my own. The star off is do to the very disappointing shipping. The product was shipped in a plastic Fedex bag in just the box which is not sealed or padded. The box was thrashed and the level was received inside the plastic bot not in the box. The corners and a side were dented so it will not sit level. Why they would ship a precision tool in such a manner makes no sense. Amazon was great about letting me return this and getting refunded. ... show more

  • World's Greatest Level
Size: 12" Style: Without Case
I was amazed of the accuracy of a machinists type of level vs a good carpenters level. No comparison, and Starrett, as anyone knows has a reputation that is second to none. When I borrowed my brother's Starrett 8" machinist level, and used it to level my pool table, it truly did the job so well, that it's almost like magic, seeing how straight the balls could actually roll, and even when hit slow, they continue on their straight path with no variation at all of getting off course. I had been trying to get one of these for over a year on e-bay, but gosh, the prices were always over $100.00 even for those that could have been taken better care of. I finally decided to pay a little more and just get a new one. It will easily hold its value by taking care of it, and in 30 years time, will be worth more if not abused. Next project will be a plane, and needed something I could truly rely on to level the table with. It already made a believer out of me with how well it leveled my pool table. I use digital levelers on occasion, but trust this one more. And 100 years down the road to whomever inherits and still has this level, if they had taken care of it, it'll still be as good as the day I bought it. One can't say as much for electronic levels and will probably be lucky to get ten years use out of them. Their displays have a tendency to go out, and they are a bit finicky. It's nice when old fashioned technology trumps some of this new stuff. This is one such case. ... show more

  • There is level and then there is Level! Pool Players Must Have.
Size: 6" Style: Without Case
There is level and then there is Level! This is a must have for Pool Players. I leveled the bar pool table with two conventional levels. Then I took 12 readings with this all around the table. The conventional levels were way off even though they read level. When it was close to center on this machinist level, it was the most level pool table I have ever seen. Simonis cloth and this level make for a dream table. Super slow shots go straight into the rail and come back and hit the cue right on the money. ... show more
