The Swanson Speed Square was first developed by company founder Albert Swanson in 1925. This innovative tool combines 5 tools into 1: 1. Try Square, 2. Miter Square, 3. saw guide, 4. line scriber, and 5. protractor. The Speed Square is die-cast for durability and accuracy. Made of heavy-gauge aerospace aluminum alloy, it is built to last. Black-filled gradations stand out against a matte finish for easy reading. The Speed Square includes the Swanson Blue Book of rafter length and roof construction and also features markings for using the Swanson one-number method of rafter layout. From the Manufacturer The Swanson Tool SO101 7-inch Speed Square is a popular pocket-sized square that incorporates features of the framing square, tri, miter, and protractor squares. My father and grandfather both had this speed square. Any wood projects they did back in the day, it was with them. So now that I own my own house it's finally my turn to buy one. If you plan on doing projects yourself, or you're a seasoned contractor, this is a must have. You can use a speed square to find roof pitches, guide your circular saw and more including marking any angle from 0 to 90 degrees. Very easy to use once you get an understanding of measurements and it even still comes with that small blue instruction book. I almost bought one of the more expensive “fancy” versions of this… but then I saw how many 5-star reviews this had and decided to save the money and get it. HUGE WIN!! I just made some shelves and this thing was in my hand almost the entire time. Need to mark a square cut? This is your tool! Need to confirm that you’re attaching something at 90 degrees? This is IT!! Need to measure an angle? Or split a piece of wood down the middle? This will help you mark it all up. This may be my current fave woodworking tool at the moment! ... show more

I guess I was expecting a more machined finished item. THis is cast alum. with very little machining on it (only where necessary). That beign said this item is going to be durable, and precise. I really only got this to quickly mark of square cuts, but after seeing all this has to offer, I can see myself using this constantly. No I'm not a contractor,or even a woodworker, just a simple person that likes to build things once in a while. This is WAY more accuracy than I can use, but the price was right and this will last long enough to be handed down to my grandchildren. BONUS!!!! MADE IN USA!! The one star is off because this kinda roughly finished in non essential areas, and it left black marks all over the place until I wipped it off. Also the black markings seem like they will wear off pretty fast (thankfully everything is cast so a quick toughup with a sharpie or some enamel paint will fix that) ... show more
