  • Bright and delicious
Absolutely delightful. Bright, smooth, amazing. These beans pack a better caffeine punch with less intense flavor. One of my absolute favorites

  • Starbucks Blonde Espresso Shines Best When Brewed Black with a Pour-Over
I typically gravitate toward dark roast coffee for my daily routine. My standard preparation uses Coqui brand coffee with a fine grind and a water to coffee ratio of 21.1 to 1 in my drip machine, which is considerably weaker than the golden ratio preferred by many baristas, but for me is strong enough due to the longer extraction time of the drip machine. When I first prepared the Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast using my standard drip coffee maker with a medium particle size, I found myself surprised by how noticeably lighter the brew appeared compared to what I am accustomed to drinking. For this initial brewing method, I used six grams of coffee per each five fluid ounces of cup volume. Brewing four cups using this ratio and tasting the black coffee before adding any sweetener or cream, I detected strong flavor notes with characteristic bitterness along with hints of bittersweet chocolate and fruity notes that are typical of a light roast. The immediate observation was that this blonde roast did not deliver the dark color I expected when combined with milk, which prompted me to reconsider how I approach this particular coffee. Rather than dismiss it as unsuitable for my preferences, I recognized that this coffee was designed to showcase its lighter characteristics and deserved a brewing method that would highlight those qualities. I decided to brew this coffee using my Hario V60 pour-over method and using the 15:1 water to coffee ratio to better appreciate the subtle flavors characteristic of a light roast. For this method, I used a medium grind size, which is the recommended grind for the Hario V60. This represents a coarser adjustment from the fine grind I typically use with Coqui brand coffee in my drip machine. This decision proved worthwhile. The pour-over technique allowed me to experience the candy apple and chocolate notes advertised in the product description more distinctly. Drinking it black with just a touch of honey or brown sugar, or enjoying it completely unsweetened, revealed why Starbucks emphasizes this blend's versatility for specialty brewing methods rather than standard drip machines. Regarding product longevity, I divided the 28 oz bag into four seven-ounce portions and vacuum-sealed three of them to preserve freshness throughout my testing period. This practical approach demonstrates that the bag size is manageable for consumers who want to maintain optimal flavor and aroma without exposure to oxygen degradation. The vacuum-sealed portions maintained their freshness consistently, which speaks to the quality of the bean and how well they respond to proper storage techniques. If you are a dark roast drinker like myself, I would suggest trying this coffee through a manual brewing method such as a pour-over or French press. The Hario V60 in particular extracted the smoothness and balanced flavor profile that makes this blonde roast worth experiencing. For those who already prefer light roasts or specialty coffee preparation methods, this is a solid choice from a major coffee brand. I received this item for free through the Amazon Vine program and I personally evaluate what I receive. I also pay taxes, Social Security and Medicare so I do not treat this as mindless ordering of products I will not use or fully test. ... show more

  • Acidic but mellow
As a former Barista- I have to admit I don’t usually go for Starbucks coffee. That being said, I decided to try this. I’m a big fan of whole bean coffees because grinding your own is always better than buying pre-ground coffee. This kind had me confused because “blonde” and “espresso” don’t seem to go together. I can’t say that I can taste the notes of “bittersweet chocolate” or “candied apple” but what I can say is that this is a smooth mellow acidic coffee. I typically use a French press, about 1/2 cup (8TBSP) in my 32oz press- slightly more than the 2TBSP per 6oz recommended. I don’t get as jittery drinking this coffee like I can with other varieties if I have more than one large cup. I can drink this black or with cream/sugar/creamer and both ways taste pretty good! I typically prefer a less acidic roast personally- but because this is so mellow it cuts some of that acidic aftertaste for me. With any coffee you really just need to try it for yourself. The label rarely accurately describes what you should expect. As far as the aroma- it is slightly less aromatic than expected, however this is something I have noticed with all of the whole bean coffees I have purchased through Amazon. I’m not sure if their storage methods contribute to the loss of Aroma or if I’m just getting a product that has lost some of the aromatic properties for some other reason. Despite the slight loss of scent- the flavor is there- and if you love this brand from the store, I’d definitely recommend buying your own and making it at home. You can’t go wrong saving money by brewing your own! ... show more

  • Fresh and a good value, but not enough to convert dark roast lovers
This is a really big bag of very fresh coffee at a pretty reasonable price. I drink Starbucks all the time and coffee’s seriously expensive right now, so I jumped at the chance to taste-test a blonde roast. The beans look good and grind well: I’ve added a picture of the lightness compared with my usual blend—definitely roasted for a much shorter time! I usually like dark roast coffee—I don’t care that (counterintuitively, perhaps) dark roast coffee has less caffeine. It’s all about taste, not caffeine for me. So I usually brew either Starbucks Sumatra or Verona at home; when I (rarely) go out for coffee, that’s what I choose. I truly hate to say it, but since my preference is for black coffee as dark and bitter as my soul, I rarely even like coffee from small local roasters. (I know, I’m a bad person.) I would love to tell you that this new blonde espresso roast has converted me. I regret to say that it has not. I can’t tell you whether the advertised “notes of candied apple and bittersweet chocolate” are accurate, because a) my palate is as unrefined as me and b) I only drank one cup and enjoyed it so little that I’m passing the rest of the beans along to a friend. This is, of course, just a personal preference, and no reflection on the product, which is high quality, as always with Starbucks. I can sometimes suffer a little heartburn with coffee and I didn’t with this because it’s so smooth—that may be reason enough for you to choose it. For the purposes of this review—I’m so suspicious of corporate greenwashing that I actually looked up Conservation International, Starbucks’ “ethical sourcing” partner. It’s legit, although it doesn’t rate well on Charity Navigator’s accountability scale—which is slightly concerning, and I think Starbucks needs to do some corporate weight-throwing to have them correct that. It’s probably more of a paperwork thing, but if so—it’s easily fixed. ... show more
