  • A Returning Angler's First Step Back Into Fishing
My grandparents chose where to retire based on a single criterion: the quality of the fishing. They were out on the water every day conditions allowed, and my grandmother once caught the largest fish in the lake in a single season. Some of my best childhood memories involve fishing with my family. Then fifty years passed without much fishing at all — until we retired to the Puget Sound area and I decided it was time to find my way back to it. I'll be upfront: I'm not an expert reviewer for fishing reels. What I knew about rods and reels as a child was essentially nothing — someone else handled all of that. Most of what I've learned recently came from YouTube, which is both a humbling and surprisingly effective way to get up to speed. My research process was practical. I booked a deep sea fishing charter this spring to test whether this was something I'd want to pursue seriously, and I spent time talking with the crew and taking notes about the equipment they used. I wanted a reel that could handle local pier and shore fishing while also being capable for deeper water. A size 14000 spinning reel seemed to offer that flexibility, and the spinning style felt most familiar from my childhood experience. I haven't fished with it in a real situation yet, but I've loaded it with line — another YouTube tutorial — and taken it to a nearby pier to practice casting. It cast smoothly and retrieved easily, felt comfortable in my hands, and did everything it was supposed to do. For someone relearning after fifty years, that's exactly what I needed. Nothing intimidating, nothing complicated. At $60, it seems like a reasonable entry point for a returning angler who isn't ready to invest heavily before knowing how committed they'll be. And about that commitment: I've started looking at boats. As the saying goes — if you give a mouse a cookie..... ... show more

  • Smooth, strong feeling surf reel
I bought this Vantx spinning reel in the 8000 size to go with a new surf rod I recently bought. It is super smooth, well balanced and has a very nice, oversized handle for fighting big fish. It has 55lbs of incredibly smooth drag and the spool has a lot of room to spool up plenty of 50-60lb braid.

  • Solid Reel for Bigger Saltwater Fishing
Size: 9000
This spinning reel feels like it's built for serious fishing. The 9000-size model has a substantial feel without being ridiculously cumbersome, and the reinforced body and aluminum spool give it a sturdy, durable feel. The 55-pound maximum drag is a huge selling point if you're targeting larger fish. It gives you plenty of control when fighting a strong fish, and the 4.8:1 gear ratio provides a nice balance between power and line retrieval speed. I especially like the aluminum spool for saltwater use. The reel feels more substantial than some of the lighter freshwater reels I've used, and it's clearly designed with bigger fish and tougher conditions in mind. The handle has good leverage, which is important when you're dealing with a strong fish, and the overall construction feels solid in the hand. The larger 9000 size also gives you the line capacity you'd want for surf fishing and longer casts. After using it, I think this is best suited for someone who specifically wants a larger saltwater reel rather than a lightweight everyday spinning reel. It's designed for bigger setups and heavier fishing, and it feels like it. Overall, this is a capable, heavy-duty spinning reel for surf fishing, offshore fishing, and targeting larger game fish. If you're looking for something with serious drag capacity and a sturdy build without jumping straight into an extremely expensive reel, this is a great option. ... show more

  • It took me 20 years to replace my old one. We'll see how this one works.
Size: 9000
I don't replace gear on a whim. My last reel lasted twenty years. Two decades. I fished it hard, I dropped it, I dunked it in saltwater more times than I can count, and it kept working. That's the bar. If something's still doing the job, I keep using it. So understand what it means when I say I finally set that old reel down and picked up this one instead. It earned the swap. That's the whole story right there. The thing that got me is how smooth it is. You feel it the second you start cranking. No grit, no hitch, no hesitation. Just a clean, even turn that makes you want to keep reeling for no reason at all. My old reel was reliable, but it never felt like this. Twenty years of habit, and this one still made me stop and notice. The drag is strong. Fifty-five pounds of carbon fiber, and it holds steady when a big fish decides to test you. No stutter, no sudden give. It plays out the way you want it to, which matters when you're offshore fighting something that outweighs your groceries. The build feels honest too. Aluminum alloy spool, reinforced nylon body. It's got some weight to it, the good kind, the kind that tells you it isn't going to fall apart the first rough season. I run it in the surf and offshore both, and so far it's shrugged off everything I've thrown at it. I'm a slow judge. I gave my last reel twenty years before I moved on. This one convinced me a lot faster. That's the endorsement. Smooth, strong, and built like it plans to stick around. Ask me again in twenty years. ... show more

  • Powerful Saltwater Reel with Great Pulling Strength
Size: 9000
This size 8000 saltwater spinning reel has been a great addition for heavier fishing setups. The large spool, high drag rating, and sturdy construction make it well suited for surf fishing, offshore use, and targeting larger fish. It has plenty of line capacity and feels capable of handling situations where a smaller reel would struggle. The aluminum alloy spool feels solid, and the reinforced nylon body helps keep the weight reasonable while still providing good durability. The 4.8:1 gear ratio offers a nice balance between retrieving speed and pulling power, especially when fighting stronger fish or bringing in heavier rigs. The drag system provides smooth resistance and has enough strength for demanding applications. What I like most is the combination of power and value. This reel gives you the features you want in a larger saltwater setup without feeling unnecessarily bulky. The handle has good leverage, the spool design handles line well, and it feels comfortable during longer fishing sessions. There are a couple of minor things to note. A reel this size is naturally heavier than smaller freshwater models, so it may feel oversized if paired with a lightweight rod. Like any saltwater equipment, it will benefit from rinsing with fresh water after use to help prevent corrosion. The included grease and maintenance of moving parts will also help keep it operating smoothly long term. Overall, this is a strong and capable saltwater spinning reel that delivers excellent pulling power, good line capacity, and dependable performance. It is a great choice for anglers needing a larger reel for surf, offshore, and big fish applications, making it an easy 5-star purchase. ... show more

  • Heavy drag!
Size: 10000
This is a good value here but the construction could be better. While it feels heavy the handle is long and a little flimsy. It’s not like it will break but doesn’t feel the best. The reel itself is smooth and the drag is 55lbs which is way more than you will ever need. The drag is smooth but it does have a bit of a skipping action. The spool is big and you can put enough braid on here for large running fish. This would probably be best for chunking as it’s a little heavy for all day casting. Like I said good value for what you get but I would be careful not to dunk and a light rinse probably wouldn’t be a bad idea after saltwater use. ... show more

  • Nice big spool
I picked up the 14000 size to pair with my 12 foot surf fishing rod, and it has been an excellent match. When I'm surf fishing, there are times when I need to cast beyond a couple of sandbars, so having a reel with a large line capacity is important. This reel's oversized spool lets me load plenty of line without feeling like I'm running out of capacity. The large spool also helps with line management and long casts. Everything lays on the spool nicely, and it feels well suited for the kind of fishing I bought it for. The reel operates very smoothly. The handle turns easily with no rough spots, and everything feels solid and well put together. The drag system is also impressive. It adjusts smoothly and provides consistent resistance, giving me confidence that it will perform well when fighting larger fish. The overall build quality appears to be very good. It has a substantial feel without being unnecessarily heavy, and it seems like it was built to handle the demanding conditions that come with surf fishing. Between the construction and the finish, I expect it to hold up well over several fishing seasons with normal care and maintenance. For a reel in this size class, I think it offers a lot of value. It has the capacity I was looking for, operates smoothly, and feels durable enough for regular use along the shore. Overall, I'm very happy with this reel and would recommend it to anyone looking for a large surf fishing reel that delivers solid performance without spending a fortune. ... show more

  • Strong drag, smooth action, and perfect for new saltwater anglers.
Size: 10000
This saltwater spinning reel delivers a lot of capability for the cost, especially if you’re just getting started with surf or offshore fishing. The 55 lb max drag gives you enough stopping power for medium to large game fish, and the 4.8:1 gear ratio provides steady torque when you’re fighting something stubborn. The aluminum alloy spool feels sturdy, and the reinforced nylon body keeps things lightweight without feeling cheap. Performance-wise, it’s smooth, reliable, and absolutely adequate for anyone learning the ropes. My main concern is long-term durability, especially if you’re planning to use it frequently in harsh saltwater conditions. The reel itself should hold up reasonably well for casual use, but the plastic handle is the weak link. It works, but I don’t see it lasting very long - upgrading to a sturdier aftermarket handle is a smart move if you plan to keep this reel in rotation. For the price, though, this is a solid starter reel. It’s strong enough to handle real fish, forgiving enough for beginners, and affordable enough that you won’t feel bad about replacing or upgrading parts down the line. A great entry point into saltwater fishing. ... show more
