The reel feels strong and durable out of the box. It's got a good weight to it. Going over the parts list it seems 90% of the parts are metal aside from the drag knob, reel handle and reverse switch. Reeling is fairly smooth and quiet. The bale is loud (metal clink) going from open to close using the reel so I would suggest manually closing it by hand after casting to increase longevity. It's not a high performance reel but for the price its a great deal and a solid build. I will be going for sturgeon soon and deep sea later so I'll be sure to update my review based on it's performance in those areas. ... show more

I was able to pick up this Big Surf Fishing Reel for half price which was its was its selling point for me. The advertising fooled me in thinking it was decent reel. I noticed to cheap quality of this reel when I mounted it on a fishing reel. This is what gave it away, the arm between the reel and rod seat is very weak. You are able to get movement between the reel and rod. Its a plastic arm! I bought this reel to mount on a cheap surf rod that I let the kids use so at the price I paid for the reel it makes everything good when the Rod & Reel gets abused. ... show more
