There are times I have absolutely nothing to do at work, at which point I'm craving to do ANYTHING. It's a nice little thing to have at your desk for decoration and my entire team at work enjoyed this thing. There's many different shapes and other things to do with it. If there's a downside, it's that the thing can be slightly noisy. Every time something clicks to together there's a reasonably audible click. I’m seeing more and more versions of this sort of toy set in the Amazon market place. Speks is the clear front runner, with RoomyRoc and DYRMD (very similar packaging to Speks) also showing well. Initial reviews from Lumnest also seem promising. Realistically, there are some aesthetic differences between the various brands but they key features are the same. Common to all: Twelve pentagon shaped pieces, angled edges, with a small magnet in the middle of each edge. The twelve tiles come together (with a satisfying click) to assemble a 12 sided sphere (dodecahedron), among other shapes. Additional sets allow for more possibilities. I have one set from RoomyRoc and one from Boxgear. I gave away a third set from Spek; which was an extremely popular gift at our office Christmas White Elephant exchange. Different brands offer different colors and finishes. Speks has a line of matte finishes (6 colors) . They also offer a “crystal” line (8 colors), which seems to be the prevailing aesthetic now. I prefer the look of the Crystal sets, but the names for the matte sets are far superior; Space Cadet, Solar Flare, Razzle (sadly no Dazzle), Monstera, etc. Each crystal tile has a clear, reflective, high gloss finish on one side and a solid color contrast on the opposite side. I opted for the “Snake Eyes” set (ie Black Matte) One point of distinction. Some brands have omitted the hole in the center of the tile. A small metal piece provides a little extra hold for some of the more ambitious builds. If you’re weighing your options (and at this phase of the game you have a few) opt for a brand with metal in the center of the tile (as the original, you can’t go wrong with Speks). In addition to adding more pentagon tiles, Speks recently introduce triangle/pyramids tiles which can be integrated for even more building options. Working with these tiles isn’t particularly loud, but it’s definitely NOT a silent activity. Your co-worker in the next cube will hear the clicking and clacking as you fidget with this. Decibel-wise, probably on par with a mechanical keyboard. As such, my sets live in my home office. I crush and repair with one hand. Experiment with flipping over tiles on assembly structures. Switch between free-standing 3-d structures and 2-d arrangements on my desk. These may be good for kids, I’ll never know. Not sure how much toys cost now days, but prices for these sets are in the mid-to-low twenties for up and coming alternates all the way up to $30 for a set from Speks. As the branded original, you know what you’re getting. Speks has the widest range of color options, the full-suite of features, and a new alternate shape set that is cross-compatible. Pricing may be a touch high, but as the front runner and apparent innovator in the space, the cost is justified and the value is definitely there. ... show more
