I am thrilled by this set of sketching pens/nibs. I have since upgraded the holders that I use, and settled on favorite nibs, so I don't frequently use anything from the set, but for less than $10 you're able to get two sizes of pens and several nibs. Everything that you need to get started, and to find out what you like and how you work (or even to find out that you don't like pens and nibs). Everything in this set is functional and a lot of fun to work with. There is enough variety in this inexpensive kit that I was able to zero in on what worked for me without buying 60 nibs and 10 holders. And I gotta say that I really appreciate these for being a good and economical way to start out with dip pens, it even comes with examples and instructions for starting out with pen and ink drawing and calligraphy. Too often entry-level products are so crappy they'll turn one off to a new field, and good products too expensive for the person who wants to experiment with something new. The Speedball nibs, holders, and inks are all good quality, and really inexpensive. Yes, there are better products out there in each of these categories (actually Speedball ink is still my favorite), but it was really nice to have all three available at a price that was not prohibitive. And really all three, the ink, nibs, and holders from Speedball are an adequate quality, I still use the "Hunt" 102 and 107 nibs and the holder, as well as Speedball black India ink all the time. ... show more

Like most art materials, if you use them you will need to replace them every once in a while. this is my second purchase, I lost some of the nibs and have worn down a couple of frequently used nibs. they are easy to use, don't get ink all over yourself and and clean up is very easy. Remember to get a bottle of pen cleaner or just use your Dawn dish detergent. It's good for everything! Enjoy ... show more

I didn't have high hopes for these right off the bat. When I received this set I was definitely suprised.Other than scratchy sharp nibs I thought it was working well. I tried using the smallest nib (I believe it is called a Crow Quill but I am not sure) and when I was finished I went to remove it to clean and put it away, it broke. Now this could of been user error and completely my fault but upon closer inspection I noticed something. This nib is made out of very cheap material. It would not have broke in the manner in which it did if it was of any quality at all. Now to the Nib holders. The larger black one (size A I think) is unique in it's design but not in a good way. The hole ( if you can even call it that) is a shape that most nibs from other companies will not fit . The smaller brown holder hold the nibs so tight that is is hard to remove them. I believe this to also be a factor in the breakage of the Crow Quill. Over all it is not horrible but you should definitely consider something of better quality. ... show more

These are so cheap so I really can't complain. If you are a beginner looking for a full set to practice with, this is a very good starting point, everything about these nibs are great except it have poor ink flow, especially the smaller sizes, not that it doesn't have ink flow, but it can take a long time to get the ink to properly come out, after a while it gets annoying. But I find that if you don't stop and just coninue inking, it's not so bad, its when you pause momentarily(literally like 3 seconds) and resume, that the ink just completely stop flowing(might be because the ink dries and clogs the nib), and in order to get it work again I have to clean the nib and start fresh. But hey with the price, it's a really good buy. But if you are a professional looking for quality nibs, these will probably disappoint you a little. ... show more

This penholder securely holds the enclosed pen tips, but it is so slippery to hold that I won't be using it for drawing. I recommend ordering one with some texture or cork where one's fingers will grip.
