I had to return this item, Amazon will be replacing it. This item is heavy, which is a good thing for a pottery wheel however an awful thing for the delivery person. It was apparent from the state of the box it had been dropped. Im not surprised because it is a large square box that would be difficult for a single person to lift and carry. Once I set the wheel up I noticed one leg was cracked and slanted. I don't think the manufacturer packages this item well, this is probably as much their issue as Amazon's. ... show more

    • CLAY BOSS wheel issues so far after 5 years
Size: Big Boss 175lb Capacity
I have been a potter for many years. I have worked with several brands. There are many things about this wheel I like, and here are the problem areas for me which I assume would be relevant before investing in one: 1. The FOOT PEDAL MECHANISM: Most competitive wheels have a fully encased pedal pad--this would be the base piece on which sits the movable pedal. The clay boss base piece is not totally encased, ie over a period of time clay dust will collect within the base. This was a big surprise for me and began happening with 18 months of (new) purchase. Per Speedball, the pedal unit cannot be taken apart to clean, it's permanently welded. Consequently, the pedal at some point will stop operating correctly: its response to thrower's desired pressure for either faster wheel head rotation or slowing or stopping the wheel head as desired are pretty variable. The original pedal completely died about 18 months out. Speedball finally replaced the pedal unit, somewhat reluctantly, after I sent videos of the wheel head not turning at all or sometimes turning with but with variability of speed. This is when issue #2 came up: in every other wheel I've ever worked with, the pedal cord plugged into a receptacle at the motor. The clay boss is configured so that the pedal mechanism is hard wired directly into the electronic panel of the wheel. In order to replace the new pedal unit, I had to work with a Speedball tech guy for about 90 minutes. The procedure required that I open up the wheel's electronic panel and then sort through 7 or 8 very short and difficult to access wires and remove them completely before gaining access to the wiring for the pedal, which is located behind all other wiring for the wheel. Once the pedal wires (3) were found and disconnected, I had to reverse engineer, in order, each of those other 7-8 wiring configurations both at their beginning and end-those wires were anywhere from 0.5" to 1+", in total, in a very small space. Once the operation was done, the wheel worked as intended--it's a fairly good wheel for the money and Speedball tech service was very good. About a 16 months later, after taking whatever precautions I could to keep clay dust out of the pedal unit, the replacement needed replacement. By then my guarantee was over so I paid for that unit. I'm retired now and throw on a much smaller scale. I never throw larger than 20#, and I'm still using the wheel but with the caveat of probable replacement in the future. I researched online and also spoke with Speedball several times to find out if there was a better pedal unit (encased base) that I could switch for this wheel--the answer was no. I also attempted to return the Speedball to the retailer and that was a no. I assumed either the retailer or manufacturer would replace it, if this particular wheel was a lemon. I got all replaced parts directly from Speedball , so there was a paper trail as to the wheel's lamentable problems, but no dice. I did not buy this wheel on Amazon.
