  • It took the Spectre 50 years to get his instructions right!
Format: Paperback
I'm going to write this review as if you've already read the first volume. If you haven't, I highly suggest it. If you're still on the fence, I recommend you read the review by William Henley for the first volume. He did a phenomenal job of really giving you the idea of the history of the character and why this series was so different from everything that had happened in the past. The Spectre is basically every human's desire to wonder why people aren't punished for the bad things they do. Where most people ask the question, why does God allow bad things to happen to good people? The Spectre is the follow up question of, why aren't they punished afterwards? Why does humanity and God let these people get away with their atrocities? He's a look at the anger that mankind feels toward its self for injustices. In the first volume there is a very nice 12 issue arc of smaller stories that really are about three larger issues that will be dealt with across the whole series. The first question, are guilt and evil the same thing? The second question, are vegence and justice the same thing? And the final question, can there be justice without mercy or forgiveness? Whoa! These are heavy questions for a comic book! Yet these issues are what drove the book. Don't get me wrong, this is a superhero book. But it asked the question of who we are as people, as humans, and as souls on a planet where there may be a higher power. This volume two has two separate parts to it. The first arc deals with the main character having to deal with the injustice of humanity. And is humanity worth saving? By the end of this arc, the Spectre finally begins to understand what his true mission in being the Wrath of God is, and the inherent danger of a mortal soul taking in that task. The second story arc is not nearly so heavy. It has John Ostrander again trying to fit all the pieces of the Spectre's backstory into one nice neat package while at the same time showing how our government tends to want to control or bandage problems versus understanding them first. At the time I am writing this, our nation is undergoing some trials concerning equality and justice for all its citizens. It is interesting that 20 years after this comic book came out, we are still dealing with these issues, and people must still come to grasp with the rage they feel for others and themselves. It is because of this, that I feel this book is as relevant today as when it is written. I can only hope that DC continues to release this series as it might be a way for some audiences to assess their feelings and realize that rage and vengence are not the answer, but only add to the problem. We as people must understand why others act the way they do, so we can understand how to respond to them and ourselves, best. Again I state, this book can be very heavy! But it's well worth it! ... show more

  • Absolute Spectre
Format: Kindle
The best written Spectre out there. Do not read Tim Sherridans version of him in his books. This is the true Spectre at his finest. Written in character. This series was by far some of the best I have read from a time when comics were at their peak. Read it today!

  • this is a great Spectre tale of biblical proportions
Format: Paperback
Beware, Hellblazer fans! Product description suggests John Constantine is a major player in this story, when in fact he is barely mentioned in passing! Other than that error, this is a great Spectre tale of biblical proportions.

  • A lot grander scale than vol 1!
Format: Paperback
wow vol 2 is just as good as vol 1! In this volume we see The Spectre lose touch, and how powerful he really is, he destroys an entire COUNTRY he rips a chunk of the moon off etc there’s also a lot more heroes that make appearances. I loved the team up of The Stranger, Etrigan, Dr Fate, Zatana and Madam Xanadu it was almost the 90s Justice League Dark before that was ever a thing. also not spoiling anything but at one point Bill Clinton gives Superman a spear cursed by Adolf Hitler book is all over the place in the best way! ... show more

  • Excellent Collection of Classic John Ostrander Dr. Fate stories!
Format: Paperback
Great classic version of DC's Spectre-- good writing and good, spooky artwork! Much better than the current DC reboot version, in which Jim Corrigan is a member of Gotham city's detective squad that deals with mostly supernatural crimes/incidents-- doesn't even compare to these far better written John Ostrander stories from the 1990's! (in which Doctor Fate also makes a guest appearance-- a female version of Dr. Fate, no less, who is coincidentally ALSO much better than the horrible new reboot with Dr. Fate being a "confused" college student, undoubtedly THE worst version and worst artwork of Dr. Fate ever!) ... show more

  • Interesting as the first..
Format: Kindle
Ostrander knocked it out of the park, he has truly made The Spectre his own as he did with The Suicide Squad. With less of an emphasis on traditional superhero affair but with the moral questions of what's right and wrong.

  • All things must end
Format: Kindle
The first volume of this comic run left The Spectre in emotional shambles after the death of a dear friend and kind soul, and the choice he had to make. This volumes focus on the "coping" of an entity of that magnitude of power, and some ideas Ostrander has about the nature of justice. Mandrake in the art is good. A gem of the post crisis DC, a product of its time indeed, but a good, and somewhat timely one. ... show more

  • The Spectre, Vol. 2
Format: Kindle
Not nearly as compelling as Vol. 1. It had it's moments, though few and far between. It got a little goofy at times too unfortunately. However, that had more to do with the period in time it was written than with the writing itself. Overall John Ostrander was an outstanding choice to pen this complex character. He articulates the cognitive dissonance and moral ambiguity of our "anti-hero" in a relatable and even relevant way. I will have to check out more of his work, especially with the Spectre. "By The Abyss!!" ... show more
