  • So far, so good.
Style: A770 ROC
I really wanted the Battlemage B580 from Intel, rather than either AMD or Nvidia for a graphics card, and for video editing, it needed to be ideally an X16 graphics card and with at least 10GB of memory, or more, but the card was elusive as it was bought out by scalpers and resold on eBay. In early January, I found a listing here on Amazon for the Sparkle branded A770, the previous gen Intel card, also known as Alchemist. It's I believe to be a true 4K card with 16GB of memory and has had several driver updates since introduction 2 years or so ago and some of its early teething issues have since then become abated. It went into a 15th gen based Core 7 Ultra build, which also included a fresh, new chipset and socket and my choice was potential future proofing for at least a couple of generations, though that's no guarantee. Anyway, I run at the moment, a year old 1080P 22" monitor from Onn (a Walmart brand) and a Dell 27" 4K monitor. The Onn monitor is connected to Display Port via DP to HDMI dongle at the card due to it having a display port, and is 1080P, the Dell can do Display Port, but via the USB C connector at the monitor and full size DP port on the card and there is only 1 HDMI port. Sadly, the dongle does not pass anything higher than 1080P, so the Onn got that, and the Dell runs full HDMI for 4K. After all updates, including Intel graphics card drivers, Gigabyte BIOS updates etc, the card runs great and I think the image is a bit sharper on both monitors. Previous card was an older GT1030 from Nvidia that goes with the previous small form factor Dell that this current PC I built replaces. Setting it up for 2 monitors took a few minutes but I was able to get it set up, and have the mouse move between them. Preliminary trial of Davinci Resolve 19 (most recent version) on a 1080P timeline not optimized yet showed mostly all smooth scrubbing of H.264 footage. Not bad at all. Really like this card and just FYI, like most cards of recent generations, 3 Display Ports and one HDMI port, while they technically can do upwards of 8K with the latest iterations of both the Display Port specs and HDMI specs, the card itself, depending on the model you have may not be capable of doing 4K without struggling for anything but playback of video, let alone many games and not produce higher frame rates. Likely not anything as powerful as a 4090 or 5090, but it is not a 2000 dollar card for the 5090, but instead, sells for under 350 US. While it is not the latest iteration of XeSS 2, it has many of the current Battlemage specs via software/driver updates for Battlemage as well. So far it's stable and works smoothly. Glad I went ahead with getting this card as the B580 has been hard to find. ... show more

  • Fast and reliable transcoding here we come
Style: A310 ECO
If you don't care about gaming - and this card is not for gamers - then this card has one big advantage: transcoding. Need something cheap, low power draw, doesn't need PCI-E connector, and can transcode like mad for homelab? This is the right card for that purpose. Do NOT buy this card expecting to game. Period. It won't do it. Buy it for fast transcoding. Note: you have to have rebar support or this card will lose significant performance. So if you don't have rebar support in an older BIOS, pass. If you plan to use this card in a passthrough for something like ProxMox or XCP, etc. you'll lose rebar and performance gets cut basically in half. It's still quite good, but it never gets the performance you wish it would be. ... show more

  • This is how you earn customer loyalty.
Style: A770 Titan
I originally purchased an Intel A770 16GB LE back in March 2023 as part of my new build, but after a few months of escalating issues and then weeks of troubleshooting it was determined to be defective. I had to accept a refund because Intel stopped making the A770 16GB LE available for consumers. While looking for another card, I stumbled upon Sparkle's AIB for the A770 16GB LE. A friend of mine knew a bit about Sparkle from the past and after talking to them about the company, I decided to give Sparkle a try. I was also curious if all of the issues I was experiencing were really because of a defective GPU and not due to awful drivers. But I couldn't get my hands on the same card as before because I wasn't willing to pay over $400 USD for it; this was my next best bet. The new card by Sparkle worked great. All of my issues from before (artifacting, crashes that lead to BSOD's) vanished, even when I used the same drivers as before. But as I was using the card, I noticed the GPU was running hot and got to around 89-90°C in FurMark, using default settings and the 1440 preset, and while playing Baldur's Gate 3 on max settings and 2560x1440 resolution. After talking to a friend because I was concerned about this, I was asked to rotate the case onto its back, and it was determined these temperatures were because of my case and how GPU manufacturers design the cooling for their cards. I use an Alta F1 by Silverstone, which is a 90° case. This seats the card in a vertical orientation versus the more common horizontal orientation of most other cases. By rotating my case onto its back, this orientated the card horizontally, and I was able to verify this. Temperatures during identical testing came in at 63-66°C while using GPU-Z and Intel Arc Controller's overlay. I contacted Sparkle, but didn't have my hopes up. This was apparently a well documented issue (granted I never knew about it before this happened to me because this was my first time using a 90° case in a build) that has been ignored by other GPU manufacturers because 90° cases are considered a niche market, so why go through the effort of making changes for them. But Sparkle reached out to me with one of their engineers and we shared information and troubleshooting data. They even went so far as to buy the same case I have, which cost more than the GPU, to verify the issue on their end. They said they would work on a resolution and get back to me. A couple of months later and near the end of December, they let me know they resolved the issue and wanted to send me the new, modified card. They paid for all of the shipping. They shipped it directly from Taiwan, while I simultaneously shipped them my old card. I received it on January 2nd of 2024 and got an email the next day from the engineer I was in contact with asking me how it was performing. Benchmarks in FurMark, using default settings and the 1440 preset, had the card running at 83°C. In Baldur's Gate 3, I had temperatures of 71-76°C while on max video settings and in 2560x1440 resolution; all of which while the card was in a vertical orientation. Not only did Sparkle fix the problem as best as they could, but they took the entire issue seriously from start to finish. They never made any excuses, they just wanted to work with me and fix it. It was an absolute pleasure dealing with the people at Sparkle and they earned themselves a loyal customer as a result of how well they handled this. I'm excited to see what you do with the Battlemage, and other generations, when they come out. ... show more
