  • It is all about the soundstage .. and ZX2 delivers
I won't go into specifications or a detailed review as there are tons of sites that have good reviews ( head-fi.org). I would like to write about my experience with this amazing device over a week now .. I bought this to replace my current portable rig which consists of Sony F887 -> ALO audio silver LOD -> Pico Slim amp - > Westone ES5 CIEM recabled with Moon audio's Black dragon cable. This rig sounds amazing with inky blackness and decent soundstage (amp helps with both). I wanted something even portable to replace the old rig also needed more space to hold my newly burnt 16/44 FLAC files. This is one of the main reason for me to get ZX2. After nearly 6 hours of loading the music and listening to it for over a week, i can say it is all about soundstage. It is expanded, vocals have space around them, instruments are separated well enough to get rid of the somewhat congested feeling of my previous rig. The details are amazing and that is during the burin in period. I can't wait for it to settle down after 100 hrs ( As per sony) . I used to use power amp to EQ my old rig, with this i use the stock sony player which sounds amazing and detailed than power amp and i don't even have to EQ. I use clear bass setting to +2 which sony has implemented very cleanly. Which brings me to the bass of from this device. It is deep and defined not muddy or even punchy. This will suit most people except bass heads. It drives my ES5 every easily and is less fatiguing. Another aspect of this is the battery life i am averaging about 30 hrs with mixed mp3/FLAC/DSD playing which is great. Please note i have disabled all applications that came with the player (mine is a Japanese import) and use airplane mode. I found that it is very good in stand by mode as well. Battery lasts over a week if listen to music few hrs a day.. None of the other high end players in market have this feature. Also UI is android so easy to use and manage. The player doesn't have sharp screen ( which is a bonus for me as it drains battery less) or a camera or FM radio which is useless for me but does all streaming for spotify or google play which i use extensively and it sounds really good but drains battery a little faster. To summarize - This is a pure audio device and it delivers with exceptional soundstage, bass and clarity with amazing battery life and user friendly UI. This is a device for critical listening and pure audio bliss. Sony has hit the mark with this and best part is the price (about 1K less than Ak 240 the current high end DAP champ). Highly recommend it. ... show more

  • Lot of Hot Air from Sony....again.....hmmmm
Although is does play high definition Audio, WAV, FLAC, etc. It is a pain in the arse. Proprietary power plu, and headphones jack, NOT Micro-USB, leads this, Sony's Attempt at their new High Res WalkMan to be awkward. Lose anything, your out of LUCK. PLUS, what really irks me, you cannot stream OUT of the USB, say to a Home A/V Receiver, which is ridiculous.Verified by Sony Verbatim. So the only way to enjoy music on your seemingly new $1K hard drive?, is to wear $1K headphones, well you know, those high techy ones you wouldn't walk around outside in. Just a real feeble attempt at ....WHATEVER they were trying to prove. It is a glorified hard drive, I am sorry, but bitter....YES...! Bluetooth streaming, yes, it does that, but not a the High Res BT ADL, whatever it is technically called. ...You would expect something novel in this approach, and I have the latest Yamaha RXA250 ATMOS Receiver with High Res BT, but it doesn't seem to kick in. And the battery is not so great as well, takes forever to charge, AND then.... bleeds power when it is off, so if you leave it awhile, few days, its dead. Not so High Tech IMHO.....!! Pffffft..>!!! ... show more

  • I do recommend despite some things I don't like.
I was able to get this device a bit early (one week earlier from JP launch), tested it for about 10 hours so i'm still at least 90 hours behind from the recommended burn-in from Sony's recommendation. I am not using an external DAC/AMP source and using the NW-ZX2 only. Headphones I've tried are with Foster TH-900 and Sony XBA-Z5. I don't know a lot about the audio terminology so my explanations may be bad, so sorry in advance. DAP's I currently own/used HTC M8, iPod Touch 4th Gen, Shuffle, Galaxy S5, and so on...basically normal people stuff. I've also tried AK240's before. Short Answer: Not as good as AK240's but AK240's cost way more than zx2, rougly a little bit over twice as much. And, although AK240 is better, it's not a huge difference to me personally. Considering that, I thought the ZX2 was a good device for it's cost. Not saying it's cheap but compared with other high-end DAP, i thought it was pretty competitive. And to me, it's one of the best designs exterior and gui (Android) wise, but i still find many DAP's ugly in design wise including this, it's just one of the best of the bunch. What I liked: Sound stage, although not as wide as the Ak240, it was still good. The bass was very noticable across all genres and the female vocals were very clear. What I would've liked: Native DSD playback, not because I know how good the quality is but was hoping to finally get to get a taste of it...too bad I am not able to yet. What I hated: I don't regret it, nor do I know how much these actually costs to make, wish it was cheaper just like the AK240. The screen quality could've been better. Just like upgrading 480p to 1080p screen resolution, I didn't really like the "High-resolution Upconversion" of the MP3. I personally like the V0's / 320's as they were than the upconversion so won't be an option i would probably be using often. FYI, the MSRP on this is 1199.99 in the USA so currently, as of 2/7/2015, on Amazon, it's over priced ... show more
