Description

Sony's MZ-N505S high-speed Net MD Walkman player/recorder records MP3s or audio CDs directly to minidiscs at up to 32x speed using a USB connection. Now, affordable minidisc media can store more than five hours of music per standard 80-minute minidisc. A single AA battery provides up to 56 hours of playback (in LP4 mode), and the player's easy-skip group/folder function lets you navigate minidiscs with ease. In addition, this recorder supports multiple Internet audio formats, including MP3 and WMA, and enables ATRAC3 playback. ATRAC (Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding) is the data- compression scheme developed for minidisc, and ATRAC3--the format used by Sony's Memory Stick--offers even greater compression while maintaining near-CD quality. The Net MD Simple Burner QuickRip CD-dubbing application facilitates fast transfer of CDs to minidisc without the need to store files on a hard drive as an interim step. Simply launch the application and select the tracks you want to transfer to the player. (Actual transfer speed depends on your PC.) The player records in standard mode for the richest sound quality or two different long-play modes for the most effective use of space. The bundled OpenMG Jukebox management software supports secure music downloads (including tracks from pressplay.com), organizes playlists, and titles tracks. As with all minidisc products, this Net MD player records from various sources and offers flexible audio editing tools. Minidisc media is affordable, durable, and re-recordable up to a million times without degradation. Sony's ultra skip-free G-Protection technology reduces or eliminates skipping for active users who want uninterrupted music. The package includes OpenMG Jukebox software, QuickRip CD-dubbing application, one blank 80-minute minidisc, headphones, and a USB connecting cable. Net MD Walkman players are compatible with Microsoft Windows 98 SE, 2000, Me, and XP operating systems.

  • So great and easy to record and play
Color: Gold Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
When I first got this, I wanted to record mix tapes( discs) from it, it took some trial and error, but now I've got a collection of mix tapes( discs) and all sound amazing. Recorded right off my phone from YouTube or Spotify apps using only a really good aux cable plugged into the headphone jack of my phone. You don't need a computer or fancy software, just a good quality aux cable and some patience with recording songs or albums off your phone. I am now obsessed with the minidisc aesthetic! ... show more

  • MD Player problems
Color: Gold Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
when i went to purchase this product it said that it "was like new". so with the seller saying that on the page makes on believe that the only things that could be wrong with it is a mark in tha paint or screen, stuff like that. well when i got the product here. i can't hear sound out of the left side unless i use a rubberband to press the plug towards the backside of the device just to maybe hear full sound if i don't move once i get it to work. so needless to say i'm a bit unhappy with what was told to me and what i recieved. ... show more

  • The player is OK, not the softwares
Color: Gold Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
If you are planning to use this unit with a computer as I did, you will regret. I bought this unit in June 2002. Since then the software give me endless trouble. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with other softwares at all. Actually I have been playing with linux for 8 years. The software is called OpenMG Jukebox. To install it you need to install the whole CD, which takes FOREVER to install it. And don't do anything while it installs, otherwise you have to start over again. After the installation, you will find OpenMG jukebox and Simple Burner. The former is for converting other music format (mp3, wma etc) to SONY's music format (ATRAC3), and the latter is for recording the CD to the MD player using the USB cable. Easy of USE: To use OpenMG is frustrating, it's too slow to start up and even slower to response to my inputs. Sometimes it can't even start. Then when you want to put your MP3 to the player, it will convert it first, and store the converted file on the harddisk, which occupied a lot of space. And if you want the highest quality (the SP mode, since all my MP3 are highest 320Kbps), it takes forever to transfer it to the unit. (SP mode = 292kbps bitrate, LP2=132kbps) Actually at SP mode, it record at 1x speed, which means the time to record it is the same as to listen it up. I tried to use LP4 mode, but the quality is unbearable. After that, I turn to the Simple Burner, which is said much more robust than the OpenMG Jukebox. I create a virtual audio cd using Nero's imagedrive. And then use that to burn the "audio cd" to the MD player. The problem with that is you can't get highest quality (SP mode), all you can get is only LP2 and LP4. Software Quality: The OpenMG Jukebox's quality is among the worst application software. It crashed my desktop 2-3 times in 2 months. The USB driver also crashed my machine 2 times. Sometimes I can't even start the Jukebox, then I have to re-install the software and do all the conversion again. SONY seems doesn't care about the software at all, since the updates on its website openmg never get updated, which is always the version 2.2. No Patch, No Updates, Buggy Software. I'm really tired of this. If you plan to use it with a computer, don't expect too much. ... show more

  • Could destroy your PC
Color: Gold Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
If for some reason you are just looking to record and play minidiscs, then if you get one in good shape, there is no reason you can't use it for those purposes. Just don't expect to easily rip MiniDiscs to your computer. Not going to happen without a serious upgrade in peripheral hardware (laptops) or a proper professional quality sound card in a PC. The software required to use this with a direct digital connection is not only super outdated and no longer supported but in fact, is very risky to install on any modern machine. There is nothing new to make this work. In an attempt to make this work I managed to destroy the OS on two new machines including a brand new Surface Book 3. (note: I have a 25-year background in hardware and software engineering) Proceed with extreme caution. ... show more
