  • IER-M7 Excellent Tuning
I recently got the Sony IER-M7 and they are my favorite IEM right now. For reference, I also own the MEE Pinnacle PX, Etymotic ER3SE, HD58x, and Focal Elegia. This is my first review and I am by no means an audiophile so take everything with a grain of salt. My most recent purchase was a focal Elegia but I found they were too bright and had an unnatural tonality. I wanted something that I could listen to for long periods of time and decided IEMs would be the best investment as I listen to music on the go and have noisy roommates at home. These were my first foray into high end earphones. I really wanted to try a multi-BA driver setup and the level of R&D that Sony put into their new BA drivers really peeked my interest. The M7 satisfies my needs by being dark, neutral making them easy to relax to. The frequency response smooths out a lot of the harshness in music and I never feel fatigued by the treble. These have the most base of any headphones I have bought, even being able to produce an adequate rumble while remaining tight and not muddying the mids. The bass resonates with a dynamic driver like quality that doesn't feel as flat/one-dimensional as most balanced armatures. I would describe the earphones as a base boosted neutral. The middle frequencies are forward and display a good amount of detail. Everything feels effortless, vocals are natural and more forward. The only exception would be female/high pitch vocals over distortion heavy rock or other dense genres where the vocals will tend to take a back seat. Highs add adequate shimmer and detail but coming from the the er3se, I sometimes wish for a little more brightness. This however is not noticable 99% of the time and it's refreshing to not have to turn down the music from fatigue. What I am most impressed about with the M7 is it's natural tonality. I have never tried headphones that reproduce vocals and instruments with such realism. The luscious mids really create a rich tone that is easy to enjoy. The soundstage of these earphones is above average and resembles a small orb around your head. They have excellent imaging with effortless instrument separation in dense passages. Rarely, the separation almost feels too much where instruments will sound like they're coming from a pinpoint location but this is only noticable sometimes in very simple passages. The technicalities of these earphones in my opinion make them a good value at the current $500 price tag. Overall, these are great IEMs for anything you throw at them. They reproduce music naturally and offer great technicalities. I look forward to spending more time with them and plan to hold off on the headphone search for the foreseeable future. ... show more

  • Balanced Armature bass kills an otherwise phenomenal experience
Excellent tuning. Not offensive in any way. The bass is well controlled and doesn't overpower the rest of the frequency response range. The mids are similarly appealing. Instruments/vocals are luscious and smooth. The highs are very well done. Extended and detailed enough to make things detailed but not harsh enough to lead to sibilance. Overall, it's a well done iem which is engaging and fun to listen to while being detailed enough to expose parts of audio that you may have missed before. The packaging is beautifully done. The 3.5 and 4.4mm cables are simply the best cables I've used. The do not tangle and have a weightless feel. The iems are plastic but have the usual Sony polish, fit, and quality that's expected. You also get a ton of tips which makes it easy to find a comfortable fit. So with all this said, why am I returning them? Because these are BA armatures with BA bass! The bass quantity is perfectly done but it's quality is just maddening. Bass is felt as much as it's heard but the balanced armatures make bass notes feel uni-tonal; As if they were being played from an electric keyboard. These were my first full balanced armature set and it's unlikely that I'll go down this road again. Even the cheapest dynamic drivers will sound more lifelike as far as bass is concerned. So should you buy this? If you want a luxurious sounding pair that are amazingly comfortable (in my case), and easy to listen to all day, and aren't concerned about missing some visceral feel to the bass, these will most likely be the pair for you. I compared them with the older brother M9 and found those to be too harsh (treble) for me. If the texture of bass notes is something you crave, you will find this to be wanting and likely face the agony of having to return them despite enjoying them immensely. Sony please make a similar sounding pair that doesn't cost as much as the Z1R! ... show more

  • Very very clean sound
Warm sound that’s crispy clear. The bass is there but subtle. I like the fact that I can wear these with zero ear or sound fatigue. Yes, I’ve heard better/stronger bass but, that’s not always great for longer listening sessions. This Sony set is incredibly light weight and comfortable because they’re not huge. They can be worn for hours. I really really like the . Super quality, clean / warm sound and very comfortable. The bass is plenty for most. I listen to all genres. ... show more

  • Absolutely incredible, comparable to the EX800ST and the IER M9
Before beginning, I should try to assuage people's concerns about the item's price and if it's legitimate: don't worry, because it is! The item is legitimate and is a real, authentic Sony IER M7. The reason why it's so cheap is because there is no warranty offered from Sony on these, but instead from the seller. Okay, with that out of the way, this is an incredible pair of IEMs. Everything about them is incredible! The packaging is absolutely magnificent and left me in awe for a bit (reminiscent of packaging of phones), the contents of the box is insane, and the sound quality of these IEMs is wonderful. Inside the box, you get multiple sizes of two types of eartips: Sony's comfortable eartip, and their hybrid rubber eartip. You also get a 3.5mm cable and a 4.4mm cable, along with a really neat-looking magnetic case to store your IEMs. Now, on to the IEMs themselves, they're really good. As someone who's a devout Sony fanboy and loves his EX800ST and M9s, I think the M7 is better than the EX800, and almost as good if not better than the M9. While the M7 isn't as punchy as the EX800, it's definitely better at maintaining clarity of music and has a crispier treble. As for comparisons to the M9, the M7 is very close in terms of sound to the M9, but is a lot more warmer in sound and isn't quite as neutral. The M9 is extremely neutral, but kind of makes the music sound flat and boring (which is the whole point of studio-grade IEMs). I'm a bigger fan of the M7 simply because of the warmth it gives to soft vocals. So, in conclusion! These sound great. And, for the price of $500? That's an incredible steal, and I think in terms of price to performance, these easily beat out the M9. ... show more

  • Tinny Sound RETURNED
My experience with these headphones resulted in a return. Terrible tinny sound, no bass to speak of. Tried different supplied ear pieces and adjusting the Sony Walkman's sound but using the equalizer software, but still, it was poor quality sound. Truly disappointed in this product. My wife's $12 Sony over the ear headphones from Amazon blew these away. ... show more

  • Delivers as advertised
I am very much aware that great sound is in the ears of the beholder. With that mentioned, I just plugged the Sony IER-M9s into Sony, Cayin and Hiby players with the 4.4mm connection. These deliver as advertised. I hear everything my FLAC files have to offer. The bass, mids and highs are all at pleasant levels. These are very comfortable after 2 hours of listening. I used Comply Comfort Ts-200 tips for a great seal and fit. But these come with an assortment of ear tips in a number of sizes. I’m just a big fan of Comply ear tips. I have been searching for IEMs that give me a great detailed sound. The drums are crisp and penetrating. The bass is smooth and doesn’t beat you over the head. Vocals are clear and crisp. I read several reviews and watched many unboxing and review videos. Most gave Sony high marks on this line of IEMs. I’m so glad I took a chance on these. I suggest you do your homework as well. But I’m really enjoying my IER-M9s very much. Good luck on your search for great IEMs. ... show more

  • Light, discrete and super comfortable pair of IEM!
I have its older sibling IER-Z1R that I've been using as my PC's daily driver. While I still prefer the sound of IER-Z1R, IER-M7 is much more comfortable to wear for long sessions and I'd say it still delivers ~85% of the sound quality I'd expect from IER-Z1R. While comfort alone won't be enough for me to replace IER-Z1R with IER-M7, I'll still be keeping a pair of M7s to pair with Shure RCME-TW2 to use for travels. Btw, I compared IER-M7 to Shure's SE846, because I like the design of the Shures and just to see how the two compare, and I have to say it's probably a better decision to get the M7s instead of SE846s. SE846 does have better imaging & bigger soundstage, and is easier to drive, but the gap from the M7 is not worth the price difference in my opinion. I'd personally save that $300 / $400 (depening on gen 1 or gen 2) and use that money towards a DAC or wireless adapter. ... show more

  • It has a very clear and accurate sound.
The IER M7s are great if you want clear and accurate sound. The bass is great too. I feel like it has a more clear sound than my SE846, however I prefer my 846s for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. Either way these are a great option.
