  • 5 STARS, BUT... / I LOVE IT, BUT...
Style: Camcorder Only
First off; this is THE BEST "RUN & GUN" video camera, on the market! And trust me; I've tried MANY! (if you may disagree, with me; by all means PLEASE give me details...because I'm in the minority, of people, who actually LOVES TO BE PROVEN WRONG; especially when I can benefit from any further education/knowledge, etc.). Now.... this is to what my "BUT", in the above headline, pertains: THE LOW LIGHT CAPABILITY, OF THIS CAMERA, BY USING, SPECIFICALLY, THE "LOW LUX" SETTING, IS INSANELY GOOD!!! AND BEYOND THE "LOW LUX" BEING FANTASTIC, WHAT IMPRESSED ME, IS THAT IT CAN BE USED IN THE "INTELLIGENT AUTO" MODE!!!! Now; HERE'S the "BUT" that's very frustrating: This camera is a "smart cam" (like your phone is a "smart phone"), which means that it has a mind of its own, and therefore sometimes THINKS it's smartly doing something GOOD, when it's really doing something BAD. Even more specific is the "low lux" setting, as well as some others, whereby sometimes the "low lux" setting selection will be greyed out, and unable to use, and there is truly no ryme or reason for this, because other times, with the cam mode not being changed, the low lux feature will NOT be greyed out, and therefore can be used. To possibly explain this, a better way, here's an example: I was shooting an event, and using the low lux setting, and loving every minute of my experience, but after a short break, after turning the cam back on (NOT CHANGING ANYTHING....), I noticed that the low lux feature was now OFF. So; I figured "no problem, maybe 'OFF' is the default setting or whatever", so I went to re-select it as 'ON' and that's when I found it greyed out. WORSE YET; for the LIFE of me; I could NOT get the low lux setting back!!!!!!! I tried EVERYTHING....switching to manual...auto...and back to intelligent auto, and NOTHING! Right now, at this moment, I'm going to re-try...since I'm not under any "at event pressure", and will attempt to see what's what... Maybe I should have done that, BEFORE wtiting all of this, but I then figured it's probably a good idea to write it, since this negative occurance may have happened to anyone else, and maybe they (i.e. YOU; if such applies to you) would like to PLEASE EDUCATE ME?!?!?!?!? I'M DYING FOR SOME ASSISTANCE, ON THIS, BECASUE AGAIN; I TRULY DO LOVE THIS CAMERA! THE PICTURE QUALITY IS OVER THE TOP, AND THE CAM'S OVERALL FEATURES ARE EVERYTHING I'VE BEEN WANTING! (yea; I'd love to be able to shoot 4K at 60fps, which cannot be done, with this cam, but THAT is far outweighed by the ability to shoot UHD at 120fps!!! Now THAT'S IMPRESSIVE! ... show more

  • Disappointing: Great build; Poor (Menu; Lolight; Stabilization; Networking); Image so-so.
Style: Camcorder Only
Caveat: I’m reviewing the HXR-NX80 as an image pro who’s been active for 40+ years, used 10+ Sony camcorders, large-small format still cams, and involved in both personal and professional shoots. So, as a non-retired grouch, I have a cursed advantage of knowing a bit about how good stuff can be for a given price. I had high hopes for this $2K 4K camcorder based on its specs, reviews, and a body design similar to my beloved HXR-NX30 that died along with its best-of-breed BOSS image stabilization. With a cost to repair of $400-700 (40-70%) of its purchased price I thought I'd bite the bullet and order the HXR-NX80 4K for its purported qualities of build; operation; large sensor Hi-Q images; TimeLapse/HiSpeed; super stabilization; low light; and its multiple networking, streaming, and (ad-implied) FTP options. Alas, within 72 hours of its possession, intense study, fondling and testing, I went from elated to depressed as most of the salient aspects were not as expected or downright dismal. === QUICK SUMMARY === (details lower down): PROS: - Full 4K UHD specs with arguably beneficial Log Gamma modes. - Good built quality and has similarity to the excellent HandyCam body architecture. - Good weight and body feel (albeit, not its ergonomics) - Proper lens barrel snout with filter thread (important for solid cap & filter mounting) - Built-in Neutral Density filters (nice to have but not essential in most scenarios) - Dual memcard slots for mirroring, sequential, and dual format recording - Excellent strong'n'sexy dual mounting point carry handle with XLR inputs & controls. CONS: - Poor control surface ergonomics (button and control placement) - Poor image stabilization. At max setting, image is jerky - nothing like their BOSS system. - Poor lens sensitivity. Aperture only a dismal F2.8 (widest) to F4.0 (telephoto) - Only 1 multipurpose barrel ring rather than the 2-3 needed for proper manual use. - Poor low light recording with its small lens aperture - even in moderate indoor lighting … Necessitates adding high gain which caused low color saturation and image noise. - Best suited for tripod use in well-lit studio or with bright outdoor controlled scenes. - Absolutely not a “Run and Gun” camera compared to Sony's BOSS units (NX30, AX-53, et al) - Poor settings control re bad placement of menu activation button and joystick - Can’t use display & viewfinder at same time so subjects can’t see themselves as you use viewfinder - Though it has Wi-Fi, cannot use it to transfer or stream to your LAN home or studio workstation. - Can only use limited PDA app for v.slow remote control - PDA app's other advertised functions are deactivated for this model. - Streaming option difficult and can only be to a 3rd party site, not to your Studio/LAN workstation. - Literature mentions FTP along with networking. Not so. Only higher end models have that. - No Still Image. Sad, as previous models had it. Would save taking a DSLR for occasional stills! === DETAILED REVIEW === BUILD 4/5: It is, indeed, built well as appropriate for a semi-pro/pro work unit. Has body architecture of the semi-pro HandyCam series like the outstanding (now discontinued) HXR-NX30. OPERATION 3/5: Operation is slow and difficult to control, requiring use of joystick on back of camera whilst watching the screen. There are very few touch screen options. The settings menu can only be opened by pressing a button on the left-side bottom below the hinge of swing out display. Once the menu is open, you then have to control it with a small joystick on the right-side back of unit located very close to the rear of the hand-hold strap. When your hand is snugly in the strap, as required for normal use, it was a bit difficult for my full-sized hand's thumb to reach back and over the stick. You'd have to be double-jointed to call it easy. It worked but was not pleasant. A further stain on menu operation is that you often cannot back out of a menu level as there sometimes is no [back] menu to do so. In such cases, if you are 2-3 levels down a menu tree and wanted to go back to the previous level, you have to resort to pushing the menu button on the left-side bottom under the view finder to exit the menu tree, then push it again to re-open the menu tree, then re-navigate to the next higher level from whence you left. Tedious is being nice. VIDEO SPECS (4/5): Has most video modes you could want - but no 4K/60fps. (probably due to power & processor) Use MP4 video (works in Premiere) - not a difficult “pro” mode needing high end workstations. Time Lapse limited in length - e.g., can‘t the typical hours of storm; sky; construction, et al. … It’s a shame it’s not able to run longer times. Only needs a BIOS update. Super Slo Mo in HD is interesting but super high rates radically reduce image quality. VIDEO STORAGE (5/5): - Has dual slots. One is SDCard/SonyCard, other is SD only. - Saves to 2 cards in 1 of 3 ways that Sony calls 'Simul', 'Relay', and 'Proxy'. … 'Simul': Same video to both cards for security (like a PC's hard drive mirroring) … 'Relay': To 1st card, then switching to 2nd if it reached full capacity. … 'Proxy': Chosen res to 1st, a low res “proxy” to the other (for proofing/small files) LENS SYSTEM (3/5): - Lens quality is HIGH but its capabilities are much lower. - Zoom range is only 12x (equivalent to a 29-348mm lens on a 35mm camera) … The range is short with widest angle only 29mm. … 16:9 camcorders need 24-26mm at widest to give same sense as 28mm on 35mm. … 348mm is eye-candy for most. Easy to implement, few need it, but good for ads. … Several Sony camcorders offer 20-24x optical. So, this is another negative. - Aperture is a VERY disappointing handicap with it’s widest opening being only F2.8. … That’s 1.5-2 stops SLOWER than cheaper cameras. … That was done for manufacturing reasons. Larger F-stops require larger lenses. … This results in a moderately lit room forcing the camera to add artificial image … amplification of 10-20db which adds significant noise and skews the color gamut. IMAGE STABILIZATION (2/5): This was the most disappointing deal breaker for me. Though some reviewers said this unit is a true “Run and Gun”, they must not have experience with a true near-perfect stabilization system such as Sony’s famed BOSS gimbal suspended lens cameras like the HXR-NX30, et al. When shooting with BOSS camera while panning or walking, the image is almost as smooth as being on a tripod. I kid you not! The NX80, by contrast, has a jerkiness to it reminiscent of a social blogger’s smartphone. Perhaps not *that* bad but not far from the feeling of it. It's Night and day. No comparison. This is not a “run and gun” for pros, semi-pros or 'prosumers' seeking a professional result. To be fair, you could add another $1-2k for gyro or gravity balanced platform but then you're up to $3-4k for a setup that is bulky and no good for anything but a pro production. Mind you, judging by the plethora of YouTube which are popular despite their being absolutely terrible with nauseating jerkiness, there will, no doubt, be some who feel this camera’s I.S. if good-great. Different strokes. However, if you need a platform for shooting hand-held, high quality imagery for events, product videos, amateur film, this isn’t it. Conversely, if you are going all the way and shooting on a tripod with controlled lighting or on bright days, and you won’t need it for low light or hand-held shooting, it might work. But at $2K, I challenge its benefit. BATTERY USAGE (3/5): I was very disappointed by how fast the unit consumes batteries. In HD mode, the same battery in my NX30 runs for upwards of an hour while the NX80 runs barely 30 mins. You can see the battery gauge descend a you shoot. Even worse, it treats a 15-20% charge as “critical, about to shut down”. This is a BIG issue if you record scenes that run over 30 minutes - like sports, plays or concerts. Of course, you can buy a huge battery or two but that adds another $250 for two big 3AH batteries. === BOTTOM LINE === The NX80 is a well-built unit with some good specs but plagued numerous with operational disappointments. It has a conflicted personality that is “neither here nor there”. It is neither a handy cam nor a pro unit. However, it may be of value to you if the following points describe your scenario: - Disposable income or a commercial budget to burn. - Do NOT need it to be a do everything, run-and-gun, semi-pro hand held unit - Do NOT need best-in-class I.S. (image stabilization). I.e., it doesn’t have BOSS gimbaling. - Have a budget to make this one of several studio cams in A/B cam setups with time-code sync - Do NOT need low light capability - Do NOT need local LAN transfers of streams or files to a local personal or studio workstation - Work in controlled lighting situations with a tripod or brace where low light is not an issue - Do NOT need to make a setting changes on the fly as you shoot. - Do NOT need professional multiple barrel control rings for easy manual operation Is so, then it is a good unit. For me, almost none of those caveats fit my needs. So, if like me, you need a camera that does everything 1st, does everything good to great 2nd, and costs no more than $2,000, then this is NOT the camera for you. For me, two out of three isn't "not bad", it's a show stopper. I returned the unit after 3 days of head scratching and disappointment. Sill waiting for the tardy refund. Lastly, I am not you. You may not care about all the caveat I noted. If so, please feel free to enjoy it. Hope that helps. ... show more

  • A versatile and reliable camcorder
Style: Camcorder Only
This camcorder is sooo good for run-and-gun situations. The auto focus is top-notch. In good lighting, the picture quality is worthy of television broadcast. In poor lighting, the color accuracy is good, but there is an unfortunate amount of visual noise in dark environments. The sound quality is kind of "meh," but, if you're a pro, I doubt you'd be relying on the on-board mic very much. I currently use this camcorder for my face cam when I make gaming videos for Youtube. I also take it with me when I travel. ... show more
