Features

  • Our most advance lens technology comes together in a compact, lightweight 70-200mm F4 telephoto zoom G Lens that delivers outstanding optical and AF performance as well as half-macro capability through the zoom range.
  • Excellent corner-to-corner resolution and contrast throughout the zoom ranger are achieved by combining AA (advance aspherical) and aspherical lens elements. Three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) elements and one Super ED element suppress chromatic aberration and color bleeding fore revealing sharpness. Exquisite full-frame bokeh is enhanced by a circular 9-blade aperture mechanism and optimized spherical aberration.
  • Eye-opening close-up performance, being the first in its class to offer half-macro capability throughout the zoom range.
  • Four of Sonys original high-thrust XD linear motors work in conjunction with precision floating focus groups to achieve extremely fast, accurate focus drive.

  • Amazing. Just get it. Amazing. Just get it.
Style: Lens Only
I am not a pro by any means. I am a causal amateur photographer who likes things compact, but still powerful. This lens is that. It is incredibly small and light, extended of course much longer, but closed, super compact. Image quality is outstanding on its own and also with the Sony teleconverters, which this new version supports. It just arrived but my test shots are very exciting. See attached squirrel image, shot with 2.x teleconverter at 400mm f8. Can't wait to take it on a trip. Now it also can be used as a macro lens at .5 magnification (1.0 with the 2x teleconverter). This lens is a no brainer and much more affordable than the f2.8 GM options. Finally a telephoto I can carry around in a sling bag. ... show more

  • Great lens, if you're ok with f4 and willing to invest in TC
Style: Lens Only
This was a great lens, that I returned. The seller didnt give me any hassles, which I appreciated. I'm giving 5 stars because the return was because I realized the lens could not reasonably replace my Sony 90mm f2.8 Macro lens...which is my opinion and not a fault of the lens. I didnt like that you had to sink another $500 into a teleconverter to get the thing to become a real macro. I also ran into more limitations because of the f4 max aperture than I expected. Again, not a malfunction of the lens, just me realizing I may not be able to bring this lens along if I go for a hike on a cloudy day on a tree lined mountain. The shade combined with clouds had my ISO over 6400 the whole day. Not the end of the world, but not the flexibility I anticipated. However, the sunny day I did use this lens...it was a fun lens to walk around, stop to get a nice tight shot of a flower, turn and get a shot of a groundhog, and then a stone bridge underpass...all with the same lens. I found it to be a great walk around lens. If it was about $300 cheaper I probably would've kept it. ... show more

  • Such a versatile lens
Style: Lens Only
This is such an impressive lens for the price. At a four is still provides a lot of bokeh. Image qualities excellent with no noticeable focus breathing. The macro feature is amazing able to get with an inches of the subject with amazing clarity. Great stability for a video capturing. Smaller than its predecessor and a little bit lighter, but has the external telescoping lens, which has a large footprint. ... show more

  • Compact extreme performer!
Style: Lens Only
This lens is super compact and lightweight. I removed the tripod ring as there is no need for it (the 135mm GM is heavier than this lens and has no tripod ring). The AF with the 4 XD motors is lightning fast and accurate. Color, contrast and sharpness is awesome and the macro ability is an added bonus that you don't get with the 2.8GM version. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Love the lens Love the lens
Style: Lens Only
I love this lens. Great image quality, lighter than I expected, fast autofocus, and than fact that you can switch to macro is pretty neat. Took me some time but once you get the hang of it and all the functions it’s actually easy to work with.

  • Absolutely critical addition to my lens lineup
Style: Lens Only
I love this lens. I can't say too many good things about it. This was an essential addition to my bag. It has come in useful for filming events where I don't want to be too close, wildlife, even plays and concerts (where I was hired to film). This is a great lens and I highly recommend it!

  • I wish I got this before the 70-200 GM II
Style: Lens Only
Got sucked into the G Master marketing machine and purchased the 70-200 GM II. I decided to rent this first to see if F4 would be an issue and it turns out I mainly shoot outdoors so it removed the need for an ND filter and you can get great subject separation with F4 at this range. The macro ability adds to the “bokeh” opportunities with this lens as I can get much closer. If you are considering a 70-200 G vs a GM lens go with the G and save money. ... show more
