You get what you pay for and why cheap out on a charger when you have a really great camera. Works as you would expect from Sony OEM. Is it essential? No, if you don't mind charging the battery while it's in the camera. I like an external charger, JUST IN CASE some charging issue occurs in the Battery (also OEM) and damages the camera...not likely an issue. ... show more

The charger works great though it is too expensive for what it is for sure, but didn't want to chance expensive batteries and cameras to save $50 on a cheap knock-off either. It's a shame this come with a 6 foot AC power cord, which is absurd if you travel with it in your bag. Real PITA. I ordered a little adapter for like $6 that pushes in snug (see pic) and then I can travel a LOT lighter and it just plugs into the wall or a power strip. The one I ordered was the "Nema 1-15P to C7 Right Angle AC Power Adapter,US IEC 320 C7 2-pin AC Power Adapter (1-15p to C7)" one here on Amazon, they have all types. ... show more

    • Not The Best Value But I Trust It
I was making do all last year just charging in the camera. That works fine and is actually quite handy so long as you're not in a hurry. This charger is a little bit nicer than the chargers they used to include for free. It uses a power cord which is handy to prevent congestion on a power strip. It also has a 3-segment readout which will tell you at a glance roughly how full your battery is. That is definitely an improvement over the simpler charge/full indicators on the basic units. Not necessarily an $88 improvement, hence my low score for value. What I'm really paying for is reliability. After having aftermarket chargers crap out and aftermarket batteries physically swell up, I decided to pay the premium and stick with genuine OEM for my camera power needs. If this charger does its job for the life of my cameras with no issues (the way the old free ones did) I will get over the sticker shock. Speed is another plus worth mentioning. Approximately 2 1/2 hours from empty - that's faster than I can exhaust a fresh second battery. ... show more
