  • Gorgeous picture, amazing sound! Gorgeous picture, amazing sound!
Size: 55 inches
The last TV I had was a 1080P and upgrading to the Sony 55" XR55A80J BRAVIA XR OLED 4K Ultra HD Smart Google TV I can say that it is such a huge difference that it’s nothing less than amazing. Between the picture/sound quality and the features just wow! That said lets dig into this awesome TV! In the box/initial setup: First things first, the TV was very well packaged and easily removed from packaging for setup. I love how Sony made removal from the packaging easy by using a sleeved system by which you cut the straps and tear down the side at the perforations allowing super easy access. All in all the TV weighs what seems to be 40-45lbs and as such is easy to move even by a single person as I did. After removing a few more protective items we were able to attache the feet (which have several modes of attachment) and set the TV on the location we chose. Attaching the Blueray player, cable box, and surround system was of course super easy. Wifi and initial setup was easy using the on screen prompts and the google home app on my tablet which we already had in use. Next the app setup for vudu, Netflix, Prime video, Disney plus and Spotify were quick and easy. We also added VLC player to access the movies we have on our home Samba drive. Use/Quality: As for picture quality it is simply incredible. Everything we play whether DVD or Blueray looks stunning with the upscaling and as for true 4k we don’t have anything at that level yet, but with what we see on our existing setup it will be amazing! The contrast is the best black we have seen on any TV so far. Side note: the TV comes with Bravia Core which is a streaming service that from what we understand has true 4k content, so we are looking forward to seeing 4k on this TV. As for sound quality we tried it both WITH and WITHOUT our current surround sound system and man, the sound quality from the TV by itself is just awesome! You really can get by without a surround system but with what we are hearing out of the TV we will be upgrading our surround sound to a Sony soundbar soon. App usage is fast and lag-less, as for the voice control it flawlessly recognizes what we say correctly. Final thoughts on the BRAVIA XR OLED 4K Ultra HD TV are again one word, WOW! I really can’t stress enough the picture and sound quality of this TV. Not to mention it having no lag on menu and apps screens. Sony did this right which is what I expect from Sony. This TV is truly the top of the line in my book at a great price! ... show more

  • Can’t beat Sony! Can’t beat Sony!
Size: 77 inches
So, I’ll start off by saying that back in 2020 when I was shopping for an OLED to replace my base model Samsung QLED, I looked at both 55” LG and Sony. The C9 was $1,500 and the comparable Sony was $2,500. A $1,000 difference! Yes, the Sony had a better picture, but not a $1,000 better! Fast forward to now… and I just bought this 77” Sony A80J OLED for $2,600!! What I’m getting at here is that right now…this is easily the BEST value:performance on the market! I received the TV a couple weeks ago and have enjoyed enough content to give an honest opinion on it… This TV is absolutely phenomenal! First off, at 77”, this thing is MASSIVE! When I first received it and saw it in the box, I was like “holy sh*t!!” It’s a wall and it’s truly a personal theater experience! The picture quality is something I’ve never experienced before… the CLARITY of this panel is absolutely INSANE! Movies and shows actually have DEPTH to them. The picture is SO real and lifelike that in some scenes you truly do feel like you’re there in the scene! The Cognitive Processor XR is REAL and it’s insane! Coming from my 55” LG C9, I honestly wasn’t expecting a crazy leap in picture quality considering that’s an OLED TV too…. I was wrong…. This TV blows me away every time I turn it on! I’ve watched The Martian and John Wick 3 in Dolby Vision. John Wick 3 was an absolute eye-gasm on this TV! I felt like I was THERE! The Martian was SO crisp and detailed! His helmet, the sand, again… I felt like I was IN THE MOVIE at times! Gaming on this panel is simply on another level! I’ve been playing Ghost of Tsushima on my PS5 and this TV has me completely reinvested in the game! I work a lot so my gaming time has fallen off…. But, seeing the game on THIS TV, I cannot take my eyes off it! Gaming, to me, is really where the Cognitive Processor XR flexes its beastly power! Playing Ghost of Tsushima, every house, every blade of grass, the mud, things around houses like carriages; ABSURDLY detailed and realistic! You have to experience it to believe! It’s like playing the game for the first time, every time! And if you own a PS5, the A80J has exclusive features for the PS5 which are auto HDR and auto Tone Mapping. Basically, the A80J communicates with the PS5 to deliver a PERFECT picture! Like PERFECT! You don’t have to make ANY adjustments. The TV does it for you. It tells you as soon as you calibrate HDR on the PS5 that it’s done it for you. You don’t have to touch anything! Another cool feature are the various picture modes this TV offers. “Custom” is essentially the TV intelligently calibrating to whatever you’re watching, and it works beautifully! Then there’s a dedicated “Netflix Calibrated Mode” which is Netflix perfected, as well as “IMAX Enhanced” which is mainly for Sony’s Bravia Core service that offers titles in IMAX quality with DTS. Both of which might be exclusive to Sony TVs. I don’t know of any other TV manufacturer that has them. The sound this TV produces is also really good. There are actuators behind the panel that vibrate to produce sound with pinpoint on-screen accuracy and incredible crispness! I personally have Sony’s A7000 sound system(bought with the LG, HIGHLY RECOMMEND) so the TV is used as a center channel. Fantastic! Finally, the A80J uses Google TV OS and I must say, it’s great! The UI is very intuitive. Searching for something on the Home Screen is fantastic. Search any genre and it pulls up all kinds of titles from all services that offer the title and you can jump to them directly from the Home Screen! Overall, in my opinion, this TV is EASILY the best OLED currently on the market especially at its price! The 77” uses LG’s EVO panel so the brightness is good even in a bright room. Definitely brighter than my C9 was. The A90J in comparison videos looks to be about 10% brighter and that’s mainly in fine HDR highlights(10% window). Also, just to note, before deciding on this TV, I went to Best Buy to look at them all and I saw the Samsung S95B. You know, the one everyone is crazy about, because it’s QD-OLED…. Well, I’ll say this… the S95B probably had the most fake looking picture I’ve ever seen on any TV…. The reds were eye-searing and the greens were damn near neon…. The picture was beyond saturated and fake looking. It was ridiculous…. Just my two cents there…. If you’re in the market, BUY THIS TV!! Like NOW!! Before it gets discontinued…. The picture quality is truly beyond words! Even my fiancé, who’s not a tech person, has commented on the picture quality. Especially when I’m playing my PS5 saying “it’s so lifelike!” Yes, it is!! 😁 ... show more

  • Exceeded expectations
Size: 55 inches
Picture quality: I have reviewed many articles, videos, tutorials - for the best OLED TVs out there, and this was the most cost effective route to take. The picture quality is beyond expectations. Movies look different, as they were meant to be shown, with the blackest blacks and most vibrant color I've seen on a 4k television. No blooming, ghosting; gradients between layers of light don't look choppy or patternistic or artificial. Brights are very bright, and darks are extremely dark. Sound quality: The unique acoustic resonator style speakers are unlike any I have seen on any tv I have owned or heard of. It uses an exciter ok both sides in the back and are attached directly to the TV , causing the screen itself to act as large speaker. The highs are crisp, and with the help of a dynamic rear subwoofer, it is surprisingly resonant and deep with even sub-bass coming through. I have a really nice speaker bar and wireless subwoofer setup and it makes using that method irrelevant unless I am watching a movie where I want super deep or louder bass. It's hard to explain the sound until you are in front of it. The technology it uses gives the listener a virtual 5.1 surround sound, and it's very good. Overall thoughts: if you are on the market for a high quality, high end OLED tv for a price that doesn't break the bank (get them when they are on sale, which is how I got mine), especially if it's prime day week! You won't regret your purchase investment. I am a fan. ... show more

  • i Finally can see a significant difference
Size: 55 inches
I had a Samsung Series 8, QLED HDR Curved... that I attained it 12 years after my 1080p Sony Died from 2007. And in terms of streaming I found the Android Smart TV lacking in many function and broadband bandwidth was only 2G. Unless I watched a UHD Blu-Ray with HDR- (I had preferred the 4K Fire Stick), I honestly could not see much of a difference except a better 1080p? Regardless the Samsung flickered 4 years later- basic resets couldn't fix it, so I figured you want quality you have to spend cash- but not insane cash. I also don't have a room where anything larger than 55' is practical. I came across the A80J and A90J Bravia TV- and I am sure next to each other i'd be able to see a difference- that there is a 900 dollar difference, but independently unlikely. I love this TV it's my first OLED TV and my first time truly experiencing 4K. I don't have a problem in a moderately lit room, the glare is minimal if there is a light source facing the screen depending on the angle of viewing. The Wide angle is surprisingly phenomenal so if you have a movie party- you can get a semi circle going and above a 20 degree angle you'll see it crisply and nicely. I've had to adjust the color it for it's basic operating system which is a Google TV platform that plays in Dolby Vision. I don't see a huge difference in the color spectrum form my Fire 4K stick, and prefer my Fire Stick witch has HDR10 color spectrum. From what I read in reviews in outside periodicals, On the A80J to appreciate the significantly larger color spectrum you should attain the 67' inch set which is the same price as the 55' A90J. (Netflix offers a few tittles in Dolby Vision, as does HBO MAX though those two it's rare, but Disney Plus will adjust to the platform for audio and visual); Regardless I am blown away by the picture clarity, it's interface, and depending on your preference, I found the built in Audio into the screen to be Atmos and excellent for the first time in flat panel screens. I prefer a 5.1 experience, but a sound bar is not really required for this set. One thing to clarify that I was slightly disappointed with is that you can either Lift the height and the legs remain spread out, but if you bring the legs in closer then you can't elevate it so the adjustable hight and width is either/ or and the hight is about 3-4 inches anyway. In general I feel the TV (and technology is getting out of hand), but if you want a good high end picture quality TV I haven't been this impressed with a home entertainment system since back in the day when TV's were 2-450 Lbs and the Wega came out with DVD players lol. I do feel fortunate to have a room perfect for a 55' but the higher end TV's are slowly phasing to just HUGE 65 and over. My Soundbar is bluetooth compatible with the set though not on the list of Audio Systems- so it's a 5.1 DD+ but the Sony remote volume is not compatible with it so to adjust volume I need to utilize the sounder remote. I also have high end Blue Tooth Bose headphones- but I have not been able to hook them via Blue Tooth, I may be missing something. ... show more

  • Unbelievably Good, Awesome Delivery
Size: 77 inches
The picture is nearly perfectly clean, clear and crisp. The viewing experience is superb in every respect. OLED's have rich blacks and no blooming, but this tech does come at the cost of not being as bright as LED counterparts. Google TV is excellent and means all my apps from my other devices can be used (where compatible). However Google TV does not allow you to turn off ads, which really bothers me, however this is true of any smart TV these days. The Sony implementation seems a little different than other Google/Android TV interfaces I've used, but this is minor. When I attached my Xbox Series X to it, the Xbox immediately recognized it and now have fantastic gaming. I have a Sony receiver also, when I hooked up the HDMI cable to it, the TV configured itself to use it, and the TV remote also can control the receiver. I have to give a special shout-out to the Amazon delivery. It was free and included unboxing the thing, and the delivery people put on the legs as well -- when they left I had a TV sitting on my stand booting up with no damage or imperfections. In fact Best Buy has the same TV at the same price, but wanted $199 to do the same thing, and without the narrow delivery window. Every aspect of the purchase and the product is premium. ... show more

  • Great but No Component Video In
Size: 77 inches
Yes - HDMI is the ultimate picture, however due to a lightning strike we have a device that requires using component-video instead of HDMI (5 separate plugs into separate ports all in one cable). Yes, we can and did buy a converter, but the description of this TV says that the TV itself has component-video-input (or it did when we bought it if it does not now). IT DOES NOT have component-video-input. We obviously love the quality of the picture. But the built-in sound could be better. It's sad we live in a world that they want us to buy more devices instead of just making quality devices, but it is what it is. We are thankful that it was packed well and safely, as well as having good delivery options for our area. We ordered a similar (just slightly smaller) Samsung TV and it was badly packed from the manufacturer, that it was amazing it was not more badly damaged when we received them (did twice to try to resolve the issue). This Sony was very securely packaged. Of course, the Sony TVs of equal quality are significantly more in price than the Samsung. As they say, you get what you pay for. While we have not yet tried gaming on this TV, I can't imagine it would be anything other than a great experience. It was worth the money, even if it was a lot more than we wanted to spend. ... show more

  • Dazzling picture, slim bezel. Google TV is an improvement
Initially I was hesitant to get this TV because of the Google TV smart OS, having already had a poor experience with Android TV. I'm happy to say that Google TV is a vast improvement over Android TV with only a few gripes that I'll cover later. It's responsive, integrates well with your streaming services and allows you to search everything quickly and easily. The Google Assistant voice control from the remote or the TV itself is a helpful time-saver as compared to typing. I considered both the Sony A80J and the LG C1. Both looked great and both had good reviews but while the C1 is more focused on gaming, the A80J seemed to be more focused on movies and TV. In the end I chose the Sony for its XR processor and the surface audio speakers (where the entire screen is the speaker). The speakers are amazing compared to standard TV speakers and they fire directly toward the viewer with impressive bass. They are no match for a full external surround system of course, but likely the best sound you'll get outside of an external system. Unpacking and installation was a breeze but you need two people. This television is so thin on most sides putting too much pressure on the glass is liable to cause it to break. This TV is light for its size but heavier than comparable models from other manufacturers. I mounted mine on the wall and aside from the power port, all the other ports are accessible on the left-hand side. A remote is necessary as the only manual button controls are on the left side of the TV quite a bit away from the edge so reaching them to control the TV is extremely awkward. Fortunately the TV can be controlled by the Google TV app or by the remote that comes with the TV (preferred). The remote has four dedicated service buttons (Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube) which are more hassle than they're worth because an accidental bump of them will jump you straight out of whatever you're watching and into the service. It's reasonable easy to correct but still a hassle. They are a handy shortcut if you want to jump straight into those services though without fiddling around in the menu looking for the right app to launch. The color accuracy of this television is amazing and the black levels of the OLED screen are exactly why I bought this it. Having watched Dune (2021) on a Samsung LED FHD (2k) screen and then again on this screen it was a world of difference. On the older screen dark scenes had little detail and on the Sony the dark scenes showed the scales of the sandworm as it rose from the ground, individual hairs on people's heads in the dark, and perfect contrast. This TV is as close as I have ever come to theater-quality movie detail at home. Even non-4k content is impressively upscaled by this television and its XR processor. Now for some gripes... This television has an annoying tendency to forget which speaker output I want and will sometimes fall back to tv speaker mode when I want the external speakers. On a couple occasions it seems that it sent audio to both resulting in an echo between my center speaker and the TV speaker. The TV can act as a center speaker to an external system so it may be that mode was accidentally activated while I had an actual center speaker, I'm not sure. The TV has a very convenient quick settings menu where you can change several things while watching your content, but some settings choices will cause you to jump out of your content and back to the main Google TV screen forcing you to open the settings again, make your adjustments and then return to whichever app you were using (or whichever input source you were watching). Google TV search is great and searching for a movie will find it in all the places you have access to it including the option to purchase or rent. However, it does not seem to find movies you have available on your home network, for example on a NAS or in Kodi, which is a shame. I don't know if it can find movies in Plex that are on your home network as I haven't tried it. The search feature would be perfect if it could locate movies in the home network. In summary: while this TV is not the least expensive by far, it is well worth the money if you're looking for the best picture and home movie theater viewing experience for a moderate budget. I could not see a discernable difference between this TV and the Sony A90J except the A90J has slightly more powerful sound due to an extra woofer behind the glass. The A90J is definitely not worth the price difference. ... show more

  • Beautiful, crisp display with great dark display capability
I purchased this TV as in upgrade after my toddler cracked the screen on my 55”. The mount points were different on the larger model, so I had to re-drill holes to fit it into my existing wall mount. The screws on the back are set lower on the 60”, so the TV was clipping my ceiling. Nevertheless, the set up of smart features was very simple— no more difficult than setting up a Roku or Apple TV. I still prefer the interface of the Roku and Apple TV to the built-in interface. The OS was very buggy on my previous set, and on this one too, and it would too often fail to load the app I wanted to use unless I deleted it and loaded it again. You are better off using an external device like a Roku or Apple TV, because they are more up to date with the episodes you have watched. I also noticed that the aggregated view of the shows you watch doesn’t always reflect when you have watched an episode on another device, so perhaps there is an update lag. This lag occurs whether you are using wired internet access or WiFi. Besides that, the picture is beautiful and looks even better with 4K content where the lack of pixelation in the dark areas of the output really shows. I would recommend it for that quality alone. ... show more
