  • High Quality, Sharp, and Impressive Bokeh
Style: Lens Only
This is by far my favorite lens. I am an amateur photographer and this lens is able to capture most of the shots I want to take including portraits, landscapes (yes), and still-life. That being said, I use this lens about 90% of the time. You might say, hey this is a portrait lens you can't use it for something like street photography, or still life, or landscape shots. I'm here to tell you that you can and the quality of the photos will more than make up for the extra time it takes to frame the shot. Pros - F 1.8 produces some incredible bokeh and really focuses on your subject - Fast lens and is solid for low light situations - Very compact and light, perfect for travel or extended photo sessions - Versatile. After using it consistently it was rare I had to change lenses to get a shot I wanted Cons - Crop factor (effectively 75mm) makes it difficult in tight quarters to frame shots. It may be hard to frame an entire subject in close quarters - There is some noticeable chromatic aberration, seen as mostly blue outline around subjects, around the F2s and down to F1.8. Some of it can be mitigated but it will still show - The minimum auto-focus range is slightly further than I like, often times it's difficult to focus on objects very close, within about a foot when it seems capable ... show more

  • Great portrait lens, impressive depth of focus and clarity for this price point
Style: Lens Only
This is, comparatively, a pretty cheap lens; I paid less than $250 for it brand new, but it performs admirably and has high-quality construction. The outside is plastic, but not fisher-pricey, cheap plastic like some other brands, it feels solid and high-end, and has metal elements as well throughout. It is primarily a portrait lens, with a wide range of aperture settings, which allows you to control depth of focus, giving the photos a professional look to them. It is also fairly compact, about the same size as the 18-55mm kit lens that Sony Nex cameras used to come bundled with. As a static lens, it is not adaptable, you probably wouldn't want to take it on your nature hike or soccer game or something, but for portraits it is a very solid, excellent value lens. ... show more

  • A Brilliant fast portrait lens for NEX series under $300
Style: Lens Only
This is a must buy lens for the nex series. The detail on portrait shots is remarkable and the bokeh is gorgeous. Build quality is top class. If you have a silver 5N, this lens is a perfect match for the body. Pros This is a tack sharp lens, its fast f1.8 and lens has built in OSS. Nuff said. Cons There are some drawbacks but I would just overlook them in the interest of results 1. Size of the lens. I'd blame in lens OSS and NEX sensor size for that. Just get additional lens back cover cap and camera sensor cap (Amazon ASIN B005N3TPJQ). That enables you to carry the camera and lens separately. Plug and play! 2. Some have reported Auto mode and auto focus issues. Really!? Who buys a prime lens to go auto mode and auto focus. Use DMF to take full advantage. To help with focus in low light , turn off auto focus assist and ensure firmware upgrade to 1.01. ... show more

  • Excellent in all respects - except size
Style: Lens Only
This lens is sharp; it's a good value; it focuses pretty well and silently; it works well for cinema/movie/video; it is fast and has very nice bokeh. Stablization works very well on both stills and video. Other reviewers have comments on this which all I would agree with. So what's not to like? What I would take issue with is the size. It's a big as the kit normal zoom, actually slightly bigger. Look, Sony, the reason we are buying an NEX camera is because they are a lot smaller than the SLR competition. Problem is, almost none of your lenses are small. I know it's possible to design more compact primes lenses, because Sigma is doing it for NEX E mount. Sony has one nice compact lens for this mount, the 16 2.8 pancake I'm sure everyone is familiar with. I have that lens and it's really the only option if you want to take the camera along and maybe stick it in your pocket. But it's image quality is merely good, not great. I feel the NEX series is easily best interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras on the market. However, the lenses are still few and far between and too large. It's especially hard to believe that Sony doesn't even have a normal fast prime for this mount, which accounting for sensor size would be a focal length of about 30 or 35mm at f/2 or at least f/2.8. Sigma has one at f/2.8 at least that's inexpensive, but not stabilized, so that's what I would be looking at at this point to round out my basic-3 collection (16mm wide, 30mm normal, 50mm near-tele). As it is I'm using an old Nikkor 28mm f2.8 on an adapter, which is actually a very nice lens on an NEX. But large and manual everything and no stabilization. At the moment, this 50mm f/1.8 is your only option if you want a very sharp, stabilized, fast prime on the NEX series. That's good, but it's also too bad. ... show more

  • Great value low-light lens - Awesome for video and photo
Style: Lens Only
I got a great open-box deal on this lens and have enjoyed it a lot so far for my Sony a6300. I primarily shoot cinematic 4k videos for travel and weddings and it's soo, soo creamy. Being a 50mm it is very cropped in, as it's mainly a portrait lens. However, stepping back, and you can still get great results for other things you want to shoot as well. This is my first purchased lens for my a6300 aside from the included 16-50mm kit lens. For photos, it is significantly sharper and better in low light. IF you're on the edge as far as this being a good value, it most definitely is. The focus is quick, low light performance is great and the build quality is also good. ... show more
