  • Been a fan of Sonic for over 20 years and couldn't be happier with this film.
I've been a sonic fan for over 20 years now and this film is nearly everything I ever wanted as a sonic fan. It's showcases why I love the sonic franchise. It's has heart, great characters, lore and is not afraid to go to darker places with the stories they tell. I really love how the movies focuses on the theme of grief and how it affects people differently and shows that the most important thing to remember is not the pain but the love we felt for each other and the time we spent with one another. The comedy in this movie is really great(though if I'm being honest some jokes didn't land with me especially towards the end of the film but comedy is subjective so take this as you will) the actions is fantastic and the animation is a HUGE step up from the other films. I also love how they handled Shadows character in this. It does have some differences from the games(shadow being an alien in the movie, while in the games he's created by scientists specifically Gerald Robotnik and also the way Maria is handled) but you can really tell they loved Shadows story and focused on the aspects of what made his backstory in the games so compelling. I also love how Sonic is handled in the film with them making parallels between him and shadow throughout the film especially towards the end, it's great. Gerald character I honestly didn't like at first in the film because it's so different from how he is in the games but after rewatching the film he started to grow on me and I even see some aspects from games incorporated in this version of Gerald(Him wanting revenge for Maria and what happened to her making him go insane). The other characters get to shine too. Tails and Knuckles are the MVPs of the movie and I also liked how they handled the human characters. They're better incorporated in the story with one moment happening to Tom that affects Sonic in a major way. The Music is also better in this film, they're finally using songs from the games. I especially love how they used Live and Learn as a motif for Shadows theme. Overall this movie is fantastic, it's a great family film and is also a fantastic sonic film that every fan will enjoy. The sonic franchise is in such a great state right now from the games to the movies and beyond and I couldn't be any happier it makes me proud to be a fan of the blue blur. ... show more

  • Steelbook sucks
This is only a review of the steelbook. Why use a render from the first movie? This is just lazy design. The homage posters to sonic adventure 2 already exist and would’ve been the only correct choices. This is bad. Canceling pre-order. What a fumble with an otherwise great movie.

  • Steelbook cover
how do you make the worst steelbook cover ever?

  • Thoughts on Steelbook, and Movie
I have the steelbook preordered cuz I loved the third movie, but I do wish the design had a bit more to it if this is really the cover. Use a pic of Shadow and Sonic fighting it out instead.

  • Awesome Movie
Saw the movie twice and if your a true shadow the hedgehog fan, then you want this as your DVD in the future

  • Great movie
(Note: This review will briefly discuss an element in the movie that has already been shown through a lot of promotional material. However, said element is kept a mystery for a little bit of the film and if you're coming in completely cold turkey to this, you may want to avoid this review if you want to be completely surprised). 3 differentiates itself from the last two movies by being the franchise's Empire Strikes Back. This is noticeably darker and contains more mature, tragic elements. (Since the movie features Shadow, they drew a lot of the story from his premiere game which had his origin story Sonic Adventure 2, one of the most serious games in the franchise. Yes, there are more serious Sonic games). This culminates in a touching and well told story about loss and about how we deal with our past. Using the Sonic games anti-hero Shadow was always going to be a bit of a risk as they had just already used an equally fast rival to Sonic in the form of Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Of course there was the risk of Shadow being just more of the same, but he manages to feel fresh. Whereas Knuckles was goodhearted but misguided and had a silly side to him, Shadow is bitter and angry and is played completely straight. He works as a great opposite to Sonic. He's also a boss when he fights, being faster than Sonic and friends and has a wider skill set than them, featuring some style of fights that haven't been done before. As much as I've talked about the darker elements, that's not to say this movie doesn't have jokes. Honestly the more serious parts and the humor manage to coexist really well. That all having been said, I did think they could've cut down on a few of Sonic's snarky lines. The whole story culminates in the most impressive final battle in the series. It knocks the other two out of the park as it goes full EPIC. Admittedly due to the movie being plot heavy and having a lot of characters, some scenes and elements felt like they were sped through too quickly. Also, some of the human characters from the previous films don't have much screen time. (I know some people complain about them, but I like 'em). Shapiro remains a great casting choice as Sonic. He's an expert of displaying bravado in a fun manner, but when it comes the time for Sonic's more emotional side, he's able to pivot so easily. Yes, Jim Carrey as Sonic's enemy Dr. Ivo Robotnik, and this time also playing his grandfather Prof. Gerald Robotnik, continues to be one of the highlights with his comic performance. I was worried that Gerald would be played too similarly to his grandson, and while there are similarities between the two, the guy really feels like a separate person. While in the previous, Robotnik has basically been played as a cartoon villain, this movie dives into his past and what makes him tick, and for the first time Carry gets some more dramatic material, and he really manages to knock it out of the park. (Given that in the past Carry hadn't been a fan of making sequels and that he'd said recently that he was planning to retire, the script here makes it completely obvious why he decided to come back as it gave him more to do). Highly recommended. Director Jeff Fowler and his writers have reached that extremely rare achievement where all three films in a trilogy are good and there is no quality degradation. 3 manages to be as good as its predecessors but in a different way. ... show more

  • Terrible Steelbook
The best movie of the trilogy given the worst steelbook art of the trilogy. Will be canceling the more expensive version and buy the standard 4K since Paramount wants me to keep my money.

  • First two movies are better
The first two movies had me laughing so hard at moments, loved the writing, the characters, etc. Those two movies were the perfect blend of storytelling, action, unexpected twists, heart felt moments, and pure innocent fun. The third film however is a bit darker, not as funny, and not as witty. It still was entertaining, but I did not want to watch it again like I did with the first two films. It looks like they will be making a fourth film given how this film ended and I hope they do more of what was in the first two films and less of what the third film was. ... show more
