  • Information posting
It is now within two months of the release date, and there is still no information posted by Amazon. Therefore, I went to the Criterion web site and gathered the information there. I hope you find this helpful. One of the most beloved films of all time, this sizzling masterpiece by Billy Wilder set a new standard for Hollywood comedy. After witnessing a mob hit, Chicago musicians Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, in landmark performances) skip town by donning drag and joining an all-female band en route to Miami. The charm of the group’s singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe, at the height of her bombshell powers) leads them ever further into extravagant lies, as Joe assumes the persona of a millionaire to woo her and Jerry’s female alter ego winds up engaged to a tycoon. With a whip-smart script by Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond, and sparking chemistry among its finely tuned cast, Some Like It Hot is as deliriously funny and fresh today as it was when it first knocked audiences out six decades ago. Film Info • Director: Billy Wilder • United States • 1959 • 121 minutes • 1.85:1 • English • Spine #950 Special Features • New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray • Audio commentary from 1989 featuring film scholar Howard Suber • New short program on Orry-Kelly’s costumes for the film, featuring costume designer and historian Deborah Nadoolman Landis and costume historian and archivist Larry McQueen • Three behind-the-scenes documentaries • Appearances by director Billy Wilder on The Dick Cavett Show from 1982 • Conversation from 2001 between actor Tony Curtis and film critic Leonard Maltin • French television interview from 1988 with actor Jack Lemmon • Radio interview from 1955 with actor Marilyn Monroe • Trailer • PLUS: An essay by author Sam Wasson This is WMG again. I would just like to point out that the first item mentioned, on the special features, states "with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray." Specifying "Blu-ray" leads me to believe that the DVD version may have a different (compressed?) soundtrack. The Criterion web site does not mention if this is the case. Also, to prevent any confusion about needing a 4K player to watch this product, I contacted Criterion about the mentioned 4K restoration. Here is their response. "Some of our restorations are in 4K, however, we are not currently producing 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays. The 4k restorations have been downrezzed and the discs themselves are standard HD Blu-rays." Therefore, you will be able to watch this disk on a regular blu-ray player. ... show more

  • Criterion’s Some Like It Hot is HOT!
I’ve been a fan of “Some Like It Hot” since I saw this movie first-run in a theater as a kid in 1959. I fell in love with the vivacious Marilyn Monroe and became a lifelong fan of Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis (aka Daphne and Josephine). Director/writer Billy Wilder and a dream cast and crew ingeniously created one of the funniest motion pictures of the Twentieth Century. Now to the meat of matter. There have been numerous versions of Some Like It Hot through the years. And I was pleased with each release. But the new Criterion Collection Blu-ray release will have to be the crown jewel of all these releases. With the Criterion edition, the viewer will see a much sharper and crisper image, and the sound is strong and steady. The MGM 2011 Blu-ray edition is also darn good, but Criterion’s 4K digital restoration reveals image details that I have overlooked from many past viewings. The MGM Blu-ray release has an assortment of extras that are not presented with the Criterion edition. While the Criterion release offers a large selection of new extras not found in any past editions. Criterion’s Blu-ray edition of Some Like It Hot is a first class presentation of this classic madcap romp, and it will be a welcome addition to any film fan’s collection. ... show more

  • Best Edition Yet of Favorite Marilyn Movie
I have the 2011 Blu-ray edition and now the 2018 Criterion edition, so I may compare video quality. I am watching on an HD (not 4K) 55" screen, with Sony Blu-ray player and Sony HD flat panel LED screen, connected via HDMI. Swapping discs back and forth, looking at details in the same scenes, I am convinced the Criterion edition is clearer and cleaner than the 2011 release. The earlier Blu-ray had obvious video noise in textures like fur collars. Faces and very fine patterns on luggage are sharper in the 2018 release. Referring to some other reviewers' comments: the Criterion disc did come in a Blu-ray sized case, not the larger DVD sized case, although the Criterion Blu-ray sized case was just slightly wider (thicker?) than others I have. The "4K" version played fine on my HD Sony Blu-ray player. I watched both in Full Mono audio, and didn't notice any audio difference. I was very interested to observe that the Criterion package notes a 1.85:1 form factor while the 2011 package notes a 1.66:1 form factor. I swapped back and forth to see the difference, knowing my TV is 16x9 (1.77:1). Not much difference at first, which did not make sense. Finally, after experimenting with screen settings in both the Blu-ray player and the flat panel TV (after years of use of both!), I pin-pointed one setting on the TV ("full pixel") that resulted in displaying the proper rasters: full top-to-bottom with narrow black side bands for 1.66:1, and full side-to-side with narrower black top and bottom bands for 1.85:1. These editions are indeed different as marked! Finally, just weeks before this 2018 release of Some Like It Hot was a new 4K release of The Apartment, with Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine; this recent edition offers a just as notable and impressive quality improvement. Consider it! ... show more
