The SSL UF1 is unbelievably well-made, with a solid, steel chassis, high-quality connectors, and perhaps most surprising of all, dual USB connectors that can act as a hub for additional SSL units or even additional USB devices and dongles. We went back-and-forth between this unit and the new Yamaha, CC1 controller, as we use Steinberg's Cubase in our full-time commercial recording facility. The new Yamaha controller seemed like a slam dunk until we spent some time with it at this year's NAMM show in Anaheim. The more time we spent, the more limitations became apparent. been able to spend time with both the SSL and the Yamaha made the choice to go with the SSL much easier. Even if the SSL was simply a dedicated transport controller, it would be worth the money, but, the onboard hardware metering is not only extensive and accurate, but an absolute joy to use in a production environment. What makes the SSL so beneficial in production, is the ability to use both Mackie control commands and Cubase key command combinations at the same time. This gives you a huge combination of control options that wouldn't be possible by using the Mackie control by itself. Well, many other DAW programs can use the Mackey or HUI control, it is Steinberg's decision to open up its key command library to manufactures like SSL that make this unit so much more powerful than all the others combined. This unit has really served as the Hub of our recording and mix room environment. It controls everything and gives us a constant and accurate read out when we're deep into an editing page and don't have time to jump back-and-forth between the console on screen of our DAW and our project window. This simplifies that dramatically and streamlines the overall process in addition to having dedicated buttons for things like metronome and automation and track arm and track monitor and so on. Many controllers seem like a great idea until you get them and then you stop using them because your mouse is just faster, but the SSL really changes and simplifies your workflow on a variety of levels. That's hard to explain until you actually get one and use it under deadline conditions. I don't give five star reviews on Studio gear, especially since all of our gear is purchased by us and not sponsored, but the SSL is truly an exception and has proven to be a dedicated workhorse with fantastic build quality, highly recommended. ... show more

    • Best investment in studio gear you can ever make!
Works great for mixing and recording. Great DAW integration. Using with Studio One, this massively improves my workflow speed and gets your hands away from continuous mouse moving. The default control assignments are great as the display labels the controls. The provided SSL3 software gives you the ability to jump through many modes depending on live recording / mixing. This is now an essential part of my workflow process allowing me to focus on actions and releases me from the drudgery of menu diving. Any combination of keystrokes for shortcuts can be assigned to your chosen buttons. This is now an essential part of my studio and provides great value. Warning: The learning curve and setup can be challenging, however the rewards are worth every minute. Physical: Steel case, super smooth controls, beautiful hi res displays. Feels like (and is) superb pro quality. The jog wheel along with the buttons and motorized fader works perfectly. As much as I would like to have a huge SSL console, my home studio would never have the room. This totally works for me. ... show more
