I placed these in my gardens to throw light into the garden and highlight flowers and bushes but found the effect was very faint. I moved them to face up tree and crepe myrtle trunks and they made great accent lights. Just know they are not going to throw a bright light all the way up the tree but they do a nice job in a short range. I had one of the 6 that did not work out of the box. The rest worked well.

I have two other types of solar outdoor lights, so I'm familiar with how they work and what to expect. I have pathway lights that look like lanterns and which are also placed in the ground with a spike, as these normally would be. The output on those is listed as 35 lumens. I also have gutter lights, which point downward when installed. The output on those is listed as 10 lumens. These lights are far brighter. There are two settings: low (200 lumens) or high (400 lumens). The setting is changed via a sliding switch on the back. There is also an off position. Whether these are appropriate for your use depends on what you need. My pathway and gutter lights are more for aesthetics than anything else: They're not intended to provide security. These lights would definitely be suitable for a very dark area where you want a maximum amount of light. I found the high setting to be too bright for my space; the low setting is much better for me. Keep in mind that these have a preinstalled rechargeable battery that needs sunlight to recharge. (Some lights use NiCad batteries that also recharge via the solar panel.) At the high setting these won't stay lit as long as they would using the low setting. It's very important to install these where there's plenty of sunlight during the day. I installed one where there's direct sunlight and one that's somewhat shielded by a tree. The one installed in direct sunlight stayed on longer than the one installed in slight shade. The construction of these lights is very good because in addition to using the spike (which is easily removable) they can be installed on a fence with screws. The socket for the spike is attached to the light with a machine screw, so it can be removed for easier installation on a fence (or wall). Then the light is reattached to the socket. The spike isn't needed. Compared to the other lights I have this 4-pack is a very good buy. Highly recommended if you need a lot of light.

These solar spotlights have 2 light modes: warm (which is sort of orangish) and white (which is brighter). With a full day of sunlight to charge them, both modes can last pretty much all night (solar lights tend to lose battery strength over time just like other devices). These are great for pointing down and illuminating a walkway, or pivot the heads upward to illuminate fences, bushes, trees or other objects in your yard or on your deck. There is practically no setup time, and within a day they are charged and ready for action. I definitely recommend these and will likely be getting a few more.

The instructions that came with these lights cautioned you to let them charge for two days and not to place them in an area where they do not get a lot of sunlight. Well the area I need lighting is under some trees. I put two under a japanese maple and two on a path that gets direct sun. At first I could not get any of these lights to come on at night and I left a one star review. The manufacturer wrote me and told me that unless you test the lights by charging and turning on in a darkened room they won't function. I eventually figured out that the button that switches the lights between high, off and low power mode is not a button but actually a slider switch under a rubber covering. The instructions seemed to indicate it was something you needed to press but you actually need to slide it left or right to set high or low power modes. Once I did this they turned on at night. The color temperature of the light provided is quite cool, not the warm 2700K light I prefer. They light for about 4 hours when set to high power mode. I received a free sample of this product as part of the Amazon Vine program in return for my honest review.

I used them to illuminate my dark steps. At the beginning, they shone brightly every night and worked perfectly. Just one week later, one of them stopped working. I tried to clean the solar panel and placed it in a place that could receive sunlight more easily, but still couldn't save it. I hope they could work for a longer time.
