Is there a place for time proven methods and principles in today's society? This is a message that is part of the subtext of Mission: Impossible. The film deals with a changing world and how people cannot always change with the world around them. Sometimes the decisions that have to be made lead people to new careers while some people are able to adapt to the changing world within their lives. Over time Mission: Impossible has held up to be a successful example of a film adaption of a television series. Though the production of this film was troubled in finding it's direction and focus. Once Brian De Palma was brought on as director, he was able to alleviate these issues. The production team was able to take a concept and vague character profiles from the television series from the 1960s and translate into an engaging espionage thriller. The story follows an American espionage agent (Tom Cruise) who is framed after his team is killed during a mission. He has to unravel the plot against him and prove his innocence without the support of his government. The film also features Jon Voight, Vanessa Redgrave, Ving Rhames, Jean Reno, Kirsten Scott Thomas and Emilio Estevez. The film's plot is in constant motion. It does not stagnate for long and the film does not stop telling the story to hold the viewer's hand to keep up with the plot twists. This film was the first time that Tom Cruise displayed his action star potential. It not only solidified him as an A-list actor but also someone who could be the forerunner for a franchise. He had to display a different range of acting, as at the time a movie such as this was unexplored territory for him; as well as learn to develop physical abilities for his roles which has continued to the present day.. While the direction of the franchise has been doubted throughout it's course this installment set it on it's path.

What can I say this was the first am I movie for Tom Cruise? Of course it was great. Our plan was to binge watch all the other MI movies before watching the newest one. We only got through one. It’s funny how you forget how things happen in the first one. has been like 20 years.

The plot of MI 1 is not new, but I will not claim it is plagerizm. Maybe more like Mexican food, with the basic ingredients of beef or chicken, rice and beans; many entrees can be made from these. And maybe MI 1 also has cheese and thinly slices Jalapenos on the top for a different and new composition. I started reading Robert Ludlum at age 16; I read every novel he ever wrote and he was the best with foreign intrigue, and spy vs. spy; 23 novels, selling 300 - 500 copies in 40 languages. It is estimated that Mr. Ludlum inspired more young men and women to pursue a career in 'Intel', than any other influence. Then there is the influence on writers. Of particular similarity to MI 1, were very similar elements of the 3 novels in the Jason Bourne (lead character) Series, where Bourne was 'cast' into the most wanted and dangerous threat by his own organization. Yet I see possible influence by some of his other early novels; The Parsifal Mosaic (1982), and the Aquataine progression (1984). Again I don't say plagianism; "Writing is complicated stuff." Most writers are also readers. They write something and it seems the perfect line, paragraph, or visual projection with words...in the moment. Sometimes a writer worries that it sounds 'too good', and endlessly tries to ensure that it was original thought or content, and not some line read in a book from long ago. Only so much diligence is possible. Yes, there are tools to aid the word , sentence, or paragraph search before commiting; yet it is the visual creation and imagery that is most often remembered and not the exact words. Also, plagerism reuires intent, and I do not imply this is the case with MI 1. I say it again; "Writing is complicated stuff." -Biblio: Self
