Having read other reviews mentioning paracord unraveling, and worrying about losing the black hawks on missed throws, the first thing I did with mine is to put red heatshrink tubing over the paracord handles. The blades are very sharp and the heatshrink and paracord underneath will still slice instantly if you hit the handle of another hawk, but at least the rest of the heatshrink prevents the paracord from further unraveling. These hawks are very light and small, and they rotate a lot as a result and you also will have to throw them with a bit more force. Still, once you get the right distance and release, they are very easy to stick consistently. At a distance of about 15 feet, I get two full rotations to stick the blade. Compared to the heavier and longer Fasthawk for which I get one rotation at roughly the same distance. During the first session, I had many missed throws with impacts to various parts of the hawks. The hawks are holding up very well. 3 stars for light weight - would like them to be a bit heavier, but they are fun for what they are. 4/5 stars for durability/sturdiness - paracord gets damaged easily, the steel is holding up great. 5 stars overall. Just adapt your technique to the light weight and take some measures to protect the paracord, and you'll have no other complaints about this set of hawks. Tons of fun!

Very durable* During practice these have landed hard on rocks and concrete and aren't worse for wear. About the only thing to damage them (superficially) is another thrown axe. I tried drilling a hole a bit further up the handle to make rewrapping them easier and gave up after ruining 3 HHS drill bits. The steel is very hard. The handle cord *The cord wrapped around them will have to be replaced. When you hit one of them with the blade of another you'll fray or sever the cord. I recommend replacing it with something bright and painting the exposed metal to make them more visible. You will lose them if you keep them all black. Sheath The sheet is impractical and otherwise only useful for storing them. Throwing They are very light but throw reasonably well. After finding my distances, they hit the target quite consistently. I had better luck at first throwing them point first.

After being coerced into attending a local renaissance festival, I discovered the joys of throwing sharp objects at wooden walls. I spent most of my renaissance day (and most of my budget for the day) throwing objects ranging from full size axes to throwing stars at different targets. Upon my return home, I had to continue my obsession and get my hands on a number of throwing axes small and large, various lengths of throwing knives, etc. My order included one set of these SOG Throwing Hawks based on their high rating. In terms of throwing, these have a great "fast" feel to them. The 550 cord on the handles seems to hold up well to repeated use, but it does occasionally dislodged and slide up towards the head of the ax (east to fix by sliding it back down). The edge is razor sharp, hence the advise to NOT use these while inebriated (lesson learned...). As a single piece of steel, there is really nothing to "come loose" beyond the 550 cord, making them very durable. The reason for the 4/5 stars is this: they are too small/short to realistically control the spin for accurate throwing. These little suckers fly, spinning many revolutions before they hit their target, even at short ranges. In other words, "1 spin" or "half spin" variable range throwing techniques probably wont be doable for the average thrower, making these more suitable for "spray and pray" throwing styles or throwing from a predetermined distance.

Really nice balance, weight, and the size caught me off guard being how little they are but they make up for they’re size with the little punch that they pack. I picked a reasonably good distance and on my first 3 throws i stuck them. They’re well balanced and pretty easy to use. And while I think they look like cool tactical throwing axes, im not quite sure how they’d actually work on an real person in a fight, but they definitely work on wood boards. In short these are really fun to mess around with in a yard to pass the time or for picking up the hobby of axe throwing. I definitely recommend this

I like these overall but be aware the metal edge (which is quite sharp by the way) is not very sturdy and nicked/folded in spots on the first day of use. The para cord handle design is not great either because if you are throwing at a target and it gets stuck, it is very easy to cut by throwing another hawk. These take some skill and I think they are over all a good product but wish they were sturdier. At the price however, I still recommend them for their intended purpose -- to learn and practice throwing.

These are lightweight, so are easy to throw for all ages and ability. Beware, they are sharp. I have had them for two months now, and they have held up great. There is no rust and there are a few dings from hitting other axes in the target. The parachute cord handle needs to be glued to keep from sliding up the handle and. is starting to get nicked from contact from other throws (glue or use nail polish to keep from fraying after getting nicked). I only use the axe covers to transport them, as it takes a while to inset the axes in them. Overall, I am very satisfied.

So I bought this set and the Smith and Wesson set and thats kinda where I will base my comparison. This sog set is nice. I have yet to run into the issue many complain about as far as hitting the paracord with another axe and cutting it. I could definitely see how that happens. We are playing off a target and only throw one axe at a time normally and that isn't an issue in that case. I like the paracord and the way it enhances the grip. I have slightly bent the blade in the top corner of one of the axes already which is something the Smith and Wesson have not done. Its an easy enough fix next time I sharpen them. Ive been using a hockey puck sharpener and it does a great job. I think bottom line I prefer the feel and design of the sog better than the S&W but at this point the Smith and Wesson have had a much smaller learning curve and have stuck better. I think with practice I will be just as good with the SOG blades and I like the grip better than the bare metal Smith and Wesson.

I threw tomahawks as a young man and recently had my interest rekindled with all of the axe throwing surge in popularity. So, I built a wooden axe-throwing target and began to throw my tomahawks again, along with some Harbor Freight hatchets. My wife had trouble throwing my tomahawks and hatchets, so I bought her these (yes, we are rednecks). She liked them a lot. I scoffed at them because they were a lot smaller than the ones I like to throw. However, Iit wasn't long before I started enjoyed throwing them too. They are kind of like shooting .22's......small, but fun. Because they have the spike on the back, they stick on either side. I highly recommend them. Oh sure, they don't have the satisfying "thud" that a heavier hatchet or tomahawk has, but they are still worth adding to your collection.
