This is a very nice pair of socks. I have not ever had other wool hiker socks so I cannot compare. They do keep my feet warm in my Keen mid height hiking boots and allow any sweat to wick away nicely. My only complaint is the band at the top of the socks constrict a bit after some walking/hiking and leaves quite the indent in my calf. They do come just above the top of the boot I wear so that is helpful for keeping the boots from rubbing my skin. I wear a 7.5 US / 38 EU and the medium-sized socks fit perfectly. These comfortable socks are perfect for hiking or wearing with boots on walks around town. Do not be scared by the words "made with Merino wool." They do not itch your feet one bit and are absolutely lovely. Note: I have skin that cannot tolerate touching itchy wool. These hiking socks breathe. Your feet will not feel hot and sweaty, nor with they smell when you take off your boots after a long day in the woods. I wear mine year-round and LOVE them. I tell everyone about them, and have gotten several family members and friends as hooked on Smartwool as I am. Gave these as gifts and everyone loved them! You would have thought I gave them diamonds. :) A good pair of socks can make or break a hike or even the day. They are a good thickness and they wash well and hold up. A bit more money, but worth it for socks that last.

Wore these tromping all over Scotland. Highly breathing and neither hot nor cold feet. Washed in them in hotel sinks and dried on heated towel racks in hotel rooms. I also machine wash and dry with perfect results. I LOVE my wool socks. These are extremely high quality
