Smallrig continually develops sensible items to enhance your experience whether its photos or videos. This magnet/suction mount for action cameras or smartphones is no different. A strong magnet with a suction added mount for extra security just seems like a smart cost effective idea... and it works. I typically use this for a small light panel to splash light agains a wall however, I have used this barreling down the road and it worked exactly as expected from this company. Yes, there are stronger magnets out there but with the added suction feature, I feel as tho this is extremely adequate (barring a strike from a tree branch, bird, vehicle... you get the idea), and the rubber base of the mount keeps stops scuffs and scratches. The barrel attached to the base rotates 360 degrees with hard stops at different intervals.. nice touch. There is a drawback, if attaching to the side of your vehicle, you will only get a portrait orientation for your shot so, think of implements to attach if you need a landscape shot. I don't think you will get landscape on a GoPro without an extension arm with ball head or maybe a magic clamp arm attached to the barrel of this mount. I would also no solely rely on the suction cup while on a vehicle at any real speed. I would ensure that the magnet is attached for added security.

Suction cup mounts are so useful but always a bit concerning for whether they will stay attached. This one combines the suction cup for the primary hold with a VERY strong magnet to keep it pulled down (and a backup for any normal action cam). Of course that only works on steel surfaces. I really enjoy Smallrig's items and this is another great piece. I really like how there is not only the large suction cup but also a smaller suction cup within it. I find this as peace of mind in case of loss of suction. The magnet is very strong! It takes a lot of effort to remove from metal surfaces. I know this can be desired but for me, it is too strong. I will be putting something thin between the magnet and the surface not for protection but to aid in removal and to tone down the magnetism a bit as I don't plan on using this on cars or airplanes. The rotation is only ok because it clicks into positions instead of a full sweeping range of rotation. I would have liked to see a switch of some kind to give options on this rotation. All in all it is a great piece of kit to have at your disposal.

The media could not be loaded. Not denying I am a huge fan of SmallRig’s products. This one I wasn’t sure about because I have had suction cup mounts for my GoPro in the past that were good (and some were really bad). So I wan’t sure if this would be anything special. It is!! This uses both a suction cup and magnet to secure this to any metal surface - and just the suction cup to most others. The suction cup has a strong grip. Bonds well to my car windshield. Also used it on my front screen door during a snowstorm recently and was able to get some really neat timelapse vide. The magnet is VERY strong! I don’t capitalize words in my reviews often but it really is VERY strong. When combined with the suction cup, this doesn’t come off whatever I stuck it to until I want it to. And to do that, you twist and slide - at least that is what I have found works best. There is a 1/4” screw adapter on this so you can attach a standard GoPro style mount or anything that you would normally attach to a tripod. I’ve attached a MagSafe mount for times when I didn’t need to have it more securely attached. This is small enough to keep in my standard camera bag. The mount and accessories can be stored separately so I can store this in a smaller compartment or even its own pouch.

We've tried so many suction holders for our DJI Action Camera. This one works better than most, but I can't say that I trust it in any kind of jolt, wind or weather. I took it on a boat and suctioned it to the top of the kayak which was fun, I admittedly watched it every second and worried that if it fell, it was gone forever. I should have tied a float to it as an extra precaution and then I could have relaxed a bit more. I've tried it on the inside of a windshield of a car, and that works too, but again, I wouldn't try to leave it up there all day. I also worry that the more I use it, the weaker it will become. it doesn't have an adhesive surface, so you really are just relying on the suction.

I own multiple camera cages from SmallRig. They design and make GREAT stuff, like this smart idea to combine suction-cup + STRONG magnets to secure small cameras (even if the suction isn't required, the rubber prevents marring a painted surface). Also unique is the permanently-attached small cylinder, topped with a 1/4" (20-pitch) tripod screw: the entire cylinder rotates (i.e. pans) with fairly strong detents. This is good for a small action-camera...BUT ...if this is mounted to a vertical surface, a camera with any heft (or G-forces upon impact) might cause unintentional rotation (i.e. drooping). Now, sadly, I consider this version entirely unusable without adding a ballhead on top *instead of* the 1/4" threaded rotating-column. The included GoPro style mount and plastic spring-loaded phone-holder only allow adjustment in a single axis (tilt or roll). Unless you're mounting on a piece of metal that's exactly horizontal or exactly vertical, you'll have no control over horizon-roll. This base really cries out for a small ball head -- which they offer on the double-sucker base version of this, but not single-sucker?!. WHILE I'M PONTIFICATING... It would be great if the pan of the base cylinder could be locked, so when using vertically (i.e. when pan becomes tilt), the weight of your camera (or G-forces) won't make this "droop."
