    • This is a nice upgrade from the half-cage that I had before
I had a smallrig half cage on my R5 before so I was familiar with the brand and the convenience of a cage. So when I got the R5 Mark II, I knew I had to get a cage. I ordered this Black Mamba cage because I do not have a need to load up a lot of accessories on my cage, just usually a microphone mount, maybe a level and a cable guide. So, I ordered this sleeker Black Mamba rather than the original style cage because I heard so much about it. First of all, there is a strap lugs on top and bottom, so it was easy to use with my hand strap that I use for grip. Then the cage is around and protects both sides on the camera and provides a dovetail for the bottom, and even will fit with a camera skin on the camera. The original Black Mamba cage for the R5 had a tendency to rub the camera, but I have not found this the case here.There is a set screw that needs to be engaged to hold the cage strongly in place, some may object to that, but I only found it disagreeable when I needed to remove the cage fully. The SmallRig designers did a good job making sure it did not interfere with any of the ports, battery of card. Lastly, the wrench on the bottom is oh so handy, but only really held into place with a magnet. So, I taped mine down with gaffers tape and it is still on the camera! ... show more

    • Too clunky
I’ve been super excited about moving from my 5D Mark IV to mirrorless and specifically the R5 Mark ii. One of the things I was excited about was the camera body being smaller and more comfortable in my hand. I was also super excited for this item to protect my camera while having a built in tripod mount. Unfortunately, this is way too bulky on the right hand making it bigger than my old cameras grip and making me unable to reach all the right hand controls. I don’t have tiny hands but do wear a small adult glove to give some perspective. If you have larger hands, this should be no issue for you. I’ll just have to wait for someone to release a silicone cover for the R5 Mark ii to protect my camera body. ... show more

    • Not the same as the Black Mamba on my R5C as I had expected (and needed) it to be.

I had to buy a lot of parts (mostly SmallRig) to get my setup the way I wanted with my R5C. A friend who does photography for a living has a regular R5 and the most important feature for him quickly became the most important feature for me too when I started shooting events run & gun. A side strap, the amount of grip, confidence, protection, and overall comfort this adds is the most important part of my setup. The Black Mamba on the R5C has this, but this new cage for the R5 Mark II does not. I'll have to sell this cage at a loss and find something else because this simply wont work, and there is no reason for them not to have had it the same. It did not get in the way of any part of the camera, or the user. ... show more

    • This thing is a must if you are hard on your gear or just need all of the attachments for video.
I had this on my R5 for years and now upgrading to the R5ii. This has saved my camera from many scrapes and falls. It’s a must! Not sure why the other person was complaining about not having the same exact strap mounts. It’s not possible on this camera as the cameras locking points are buffet BUT there are still strap slots. Just simply look at the instructions. The bottom stap location is on the bottom near the battery door. It’s not exactly the same but it’s still there. ... show more
