For years I just hung a flashlight in the center of our tents for light while prepping for bed. No more! These lights are incredible! Three settings changed by the press of a single button that I was able to find in the dark. The bright setting is great for finding small items cast into tent corners. The low setting was perfect ambient light while settling in, but not ready for total darkness. The third setting flashes on and off repeatedly, which seems like a great option in case of emergency - or if you are my kids - an impromptu dance party. I was worried that the LED bulb would be too harsh or blinding, but the opaque white plastic bulb part allowed enough light to come through without searing our corneas. The tents looked so warm and cozy from afar, and I didn't worry about heat buildup or sucking down the batteries thanks to low energy usage. Each light takes 3 AAA batteries. These are awesome tent lights when camping. They seem to last forever and are very lightweight. We use our in the middle of the tent to hang and provide light as needed. It would be nice if you could turn it off without cycling through all the modes, but I know that it is trying to keep it's simple design. The light is soft white and the brightness setting are great. I don't see a real benefit to the SOS function since the attach point doesn't clip closed. I would want it to close securely to mount on a backpack for the SOS feature or if placed out for notification purposes. ... show more

Let's get the basics out first. These lights are small, sturdy, lightweight, and bright. That makes them functional and handy. If you are planning on throwing your lights down a ravine or tossing them out a kayak, you might require a sturdier product. But for the average user, they're tough enough to be well worth their price tag. I would even trust them in a little rain (although no water resistant claims are made, the manufacturing and button are pretty tight.) No one else seems to have had this issue, but in case there are other dummies out there, I am going to point out the basics of assembly. There are only a few things you need to know. 1. These don't come with batteries. 2. Insert the batteries facing the right direction. 3. Rotate the battery cylinder until you are looking at the side with a metal strip. This is the side that you will slide between the two ridges on the inside of the "bulb." 4. When you screw it closed, don't do it gently, like a girl afraid to break the plastic. Do it gung-ho, as far as it will twist. Twist for all you're worth! It needs to be wound pretty tight for the contacts to meet. That is all, but I included pictures unless you really are as dumb as me. I was offered a discount on this product, in exchange for a review, but never could get it to work, and the vendor didn't write me back, so I ended up buying it at full price, because I really wanted these little things. not sure what the negative reviews on here are about - perhaps people are trying to illuminate their entire campsite or porch with these things? Not what it's made for guys... I bought this for the purpose of hanging as a little baby chandelier in my tent, and it worked perfectly! Three settings makes it bright / medium bright / blinking, its small, compact, easy to install batteries, and fits just about anywhere! totally stoked on this purchase, and will take it on all my camping trips from now on. ... show more

    • Cheap and cheaply made
I don't hate this lamp. It is very useful and very bright, and you might be like me and be willing to take the risk for the benefits you do get. Pros: 1. The flashlight and lamp modes are functionally distinct, and both very useful in different situations. The flashlight mode creates a focused beam from the center of the device, and the light from this pierces a much longer distance than the lamp. The lamp mode creates a lot of surrounding light and is great for illuminating a small space. 2. The magnet on the back is a brilliant inclusion. If you have a metallic surface on which to place it, the magnet goes a long way to stabilize an otherwise top-heavy device. Personally, I've attached the lamp to the inside of the hood of my car when doing a little nighttime repair and it could hold it up without issue. 3. The shape is convenient for tucking into corners and the like. 4. Light weight 5. 18650 compatibility. This is the reason I purchased this device. The battery life is far and away superior to anything that uses dry-cell/alkaline batteries, and you can recharge the batteries over and over again. This feature should be more common, in my opinion. 6. From a value-based engineering perspective, this device is just short of brilliant. Fixing a couple of minor flaws would make this thing an absolute winner. Cons: 1. I hate the flashing lamp mode. Having to click past it to turn the lamp off is annoying. 2. As others have said, the loop on the back will break off. I knew this from the start and tried my best to protect it, but it eventually happened to both devices. I was able to fashion a replacement out of a length of bent coat hanger, but this should not be necessary. It's a poor choice of plastics. It's not ductile enough. Using a different material could solve this problem. 3. The shape is awkward in the hand. You need to hold it lightly otherwise it will slide from your grip. 4. Light weight is due to inexpensive construction. It's more of an emergent property than an actual feature. 5. (minor) Using an 18650 does increase the weight significantly, but there's no doubt that the amount of use time you can get from each battery means you have to carry far fewer batteries overall. 6. One of the two lamps I received had a cold solder joint. This only showed up after a few weeks of use. The light would randomly shut off. Shaking it a little bit would resolve the problem for a time, but gradually got worse. Finally, I disassembled it (you get in by popping off the light diffuser/lens--which is not easy!), and took a look at the circuit board. I found the bad joint and reflowed it with some fresh solder and the light has been fully functional ever since. Again, though, like the loop, I shouldn't need to fix a product like this.
