came doa fuse needed to be replaced, it happens, Replaced the fuse turned on the heat. went across the room to grab the temp gun and it started to smell. I quickly went back to it and turned it off. Checked temps on plate and it was 120f. let it cool off and reached to move it touching a side screw and woweee ouchiemamma! 'yes, I screamed like a girl... Fun had by all... Well I fell down the stairs and it was at the bottom of the stairs packed up. So were some of my tools. Hip hurting I didnt want to get up and reclimb the stairs so I grabbed it and tinkered. Tightened a couple of loose wires and put ot back together. Plugged it in and tossed some water on it in a beaker. Thing holds steady temp like a long distance marathon runner. Think I'll keep it. It's bitten me once and I can live with that. Have had a lot worse than a tiny bite from an ungrounded appliance. 2 years old and stuck a 1960's hot two prong percolator wire in my mouth.     • Great for amateur chemists
This heat plate is great for any amateur chemist who does experiments at home like myself. It took me a while to find a hot plate with a stir function that I wanted to buy, because the vast majority of them had conflicting ratings of 5 and 1 star reviews. I eventually settled on this one and it worked great. Although the heating is a bit slower than what I'd like, it still functions perfectly fine and the temperature control is good. Although, the stirring could be a little bit better as the magnetic stirrer seems a bit rough, which worries me a bit. Temp control doesn’t have indicator for desired temp. Put some cooking oil for frying in a beaker. Turn the knob about 1/4 way up and let sit 30-40 minutes. Using oven thermometer, check temp and record degrees and knob placement. Adjust as needed always waiting 30-40 minutes for temp to stabilize. When you find the temp you’re looking for, use a marker and label the knob. ... show more

    • Gets hot, not warm
My main issue with this unit is the method used to set temperature. I am familiar with the usual designs used for adjusting intensity of heaters, lamps and other resistive loads having designed them myself. This has the same issue that many low-cost dimmers have in that you cannot set the temperature (or intensity) to a value below a certain point. Starting at OFF, turning up the control results in nothing until a certain point is reached, then suddenly it begins to work and the heating/intensity can be finely adjusted after that point. Starting at full-ON, turning the intensity/heating down drops as expected until a point is reached, then it turns OFF abruptly. But the unit is low-cost and if you are not in the situation of having to set a specific low heat level, then it may not be an issue. I would have been happier if the threshold point were lower since I did need to have some warm heating. My second issue is that a finer thread or different alloy for the thermometer holder clamp would be nice. After crunching down on the clamp screw, the arm holding the thermometer was still not rigid enough to hold the thermometer in one place. Finally, a protection ring around the heating plate would help prevent accidental burning if a person happened to move their hand laterally across the table and touch the rim of the hot plate. But these are all 4-star features and with an evaluation system where the vendor is guaranteed one star, making this a three-star rating is reasonable to me. If I planned to use this often enough, I would pay more and get these features. Since this was for showing an on-line schooled child some cool chemistry experiments, I am happy with this unit. It does the job I wanted, has worked the 7-8 times I need it, seems to be well designed beyond the above comments and the price was right. ... show more

    • Did what I expected
It was mostly functional except for several instances where there would be sudden loss of power. Flicking the heat knob back and forth reactivated it. Maybe just mine is faulty, because I had to constantly monitor the temp. I bought it because it wasnt expensive so can't complain

Procured from a private Amazon Associate*: Temperature proves difficult to control, even with use of a thermometer. Laboratory glassware buffered by a sand bath recommended (naturally) to reduce risk of sudden catastrophic failure when heating liquids to-and-above 100-degree Celsius. Thermometer stand can be an obstacle while erected when main unit is in-use. Decent for students who are beginning to learn chemistry or for basic mixing jobs, yet one should consider a higher tier plate-mixer for precision with complex mixtures. *Amazon Associate failed to include necessary power cable, had to procure an alternate, suitable cable from office-supply store.
