Description

The sole survivor of a serial killer might hold the key to stopping a new spree of murders in this propulsive horror thriller in the vein of The Black Phone and The Whisper Man.Dark and twisting at every turn, fans of Catriona Ward will love this chilling new tale from the deviously inventive horror author that Peter Farris calls the "clear heir to Stephen King."Beware the one who got away . . .Father Silence once terrorized the rural town of Twisted Tree, disguising himself as a priest to prey on the most vulnerable members of society. When the police finally found his House of Horrors, they uncovered nineteen bodies and one survivor–a boy now locked away in a hospital for the criminally insane.Nearly two decades later, Father Silence is finally put to death, but by the next morning, the detective who made the original arrest is found dead. A new serial killer is taking credit for the murder and calling himself the Outcast. The detective’s daughter, Tess Claibourne, is a detective herself, haunted by childhood trauma and horrified by the death of her father and the resurgence of Father Silence’s legacy. When Tess’s daughter is kidnapped by the Outcast, Tess is forced to face her worst fears and long- buried memories. With no leads to follow, she travels back to Twisted Tree to visit the boy who survived and see what secrets might be buried in the tangled web of his broken mind. With captivating prose and an old-school horror flair, Sleep Tight is a must-listen haunting tale from a true master of the genre. • But you won't Sleep Tight after reading it!
Format: Kindle
This book plays out like a chilling psychological thriller that begs to be made into a movie or TV show. It’s dark, tense, and haunting in all the right ways—every chapter pulls you deeper into its twisted world. From the very first page, Markert grabs hold and doesn’t let go, creating a fast-paced, atmospheric story that lingers long after you finish. There’s a house of horrors, cult activity, a serial killer who sings lullabies to his victims, and enough psychological tension to make you forget to breathe. The multiple POVs and shifting timelines are masterfully woven together, each layer deepening the unease while keeping you desperate for answers. Beyond the chills, what really stands out is how intelligently written this story is. Markert explores the psychology of trauma—repression, dissociation, and the fractured mind—with stunning precision. Every character feels real, damaged, and terrifyingly human. If you think you’ve read every twist in the thriller genre, think again. I’ve read hundreds of thrillers and horror novels, and this one still managed to surprise—and completely unnerve—me. I devoured it in one sitting and immediately added more of Markert’s work to my list. Contrary to the title, you will not “Sleep Tight” after reading this. ... show more

  • I enjoyed it but…
Format: Kindle
It did take me a little while to get into — the beginning felt slower than I expected, and I wasn’t immediately pulled in. But once the story found its rhythm, I was fully invested. The story itself is genuinely interesting, with enough twists and eerie moments to keep you curious about what was really going on. ... show more

  • So so
Format: Kindle
I was somewhere between two and three stars, but feeling generous, I went three. The plot eventually got very interesting with different layers being added quickly. I felt no attachment to the characters and sometimes wished they all just bit the big one. I did enjoy the writing style, I felt the author had a good pace and a great eye for detail. If I had to give advice, I'd say read the Nightmare Man. ... show more

  • Sleep Tight
Format: Kindle
After reading this, I may never sleep tight again. This book is a roller coaster ride from the start that only becomes wilder and more twisted as it goes. It makes you repeatedly believe you know "whodunnit" only to take another unexpected twist in a completely different direction. It's a story of love, of evil, of a strange unbelievable hero and of a small town where evil grew as twisted as it's name! It deserves far more than 5 stars! I cannot recommend it highly enough!! ... show more

  • This was my first J.H. Markert read, and I loved it. Just in time for spooky season.
Format: Kindle
Seventeen years ago, Jeff Pritchard reigned terror over the town of Twisted Tree, Kentucky. He would disguise himself as a priest to be able to kidnap and murder the outcasts of society. Targeting the neglected, the addicted and the forgotten. When Jeff Pritchard was arrested, he never spoke a word to the media, so they dubbed him Father Silence. But now his reign of terror is over, and his day of execution has come. Or is it? The morning after Jeff’s execution, Missoula police detective Tess Claiborne receives a call from someone who identifies themselves as “the Outcast” and claims to have killed the lead detective from the Father Silence case. Tess has close connection to both cases and works tirelessly to catch the latest killer while juggling her own present and childhood trauma surrounding the Father Silence case. I read so many thriller/mystery and horror books, but this one, yikes! I was reading this on the edge of my seat, flipping pages to find out what happens next. Markert hits us hard within the first chapter leaving us needing answers. For me this was a fast paced, tension from cover-to-cover thriller novel. He also sprinkles in some creepy, atmospheric, serial killer living in a house of horrors. Then if your anxiety has not hit the roof, he tosses in some cult activity and messed up lullaby’s he sings to his victims. Contrary to what the title says, you will not Sleep Tight after reading this. ... show more

  • WOW a BEAUTIFUL masterpiece
Format: Kindle
I don’t think I have words to truly express how incredible this book is. This is honestly the first novel in a long time that I couldn’t predict the ending or even predict what was around the next corner. This book kept me guessing, terrified, on edge, and just gripped from beginning to end. I have never seen an author be able to tell a story as intricate, detailed, and complex as this one and still make it a nail biter that I couldn’t put down. I had to keep reading to the end to finally understand how all the lines of this story were woven together. Truly an incredible book! HIGHLY RECOMMEND ... show more

  • This Sent Me Spiraling
Format: Kindle
I'll admit this took me a bit to get into. However, once I did it sent me spiraling. This would make an incredible horror movie (perfect for Halloween)! There were so many twists and turns that I was constantly guessing at Markert's next move.
