  • Looks good
Appears to be well made. I've only used it a few times, so this review is very preliminary.

  • Beautiful set of calipers.
These calipers are honestly a piece of art. Every part of these is expertly machined and put together with tight tolerances. It's made out of a nice brushed stainless steel, the numbers are very clear and easy to read. The green aluminum knurled knob around the indicator and the subtle SK logo in the center is just so clean looking compared to some of SK's more gaudy tools. Operating the caliper is just so buttery smooth. It's almost mesmerizing watching how fast and effortlessly the dial spins as you open the calipers. Digital calipers are really nice, but there's something really satisfying about watching a pair of manual calipers like these operate. The way it fragments everything is really wonderful. It comes in a really well made plastic molded case. There's no air gaps, no blow molding, just enough plastic to protect the tool and not waste space. It also comes with some foam to protect it. It's a well made compact tool case that will protect the indicator and I'll always want to keep the indicator with the case. $60 is a lot of money for a dial indicator, but I really am impressed with this one. Manual dial indicators like these can get well into the hundreds of dollars. I think it's probably worth the money it if you really want the precision of a manual dial indicator like this. This is a quality product and it will cost more than your typical harbor freight digital indicator. For most use cases, you don't need one as nice as this, but for those who do... this one is pretty solid for the money. ... show more

  • Good accuracy in a quality product Good accuracy in a quality product
Thirty-five years ago, I worked at a machine shop in the summer. They had very expensive and accurate dial calipers that you checked out in the morning from the tool crib and got pay docked if they were lost or damaged. They were made in the USA and had a substantial feel in weight and quality. This SK Tools 6-inch dial caliper reminded me of them the first time I held them. They also feel quite substantial and have a high-quality feel to them. The caliper comes in a storage case to match the quality. The dial is marked in 0.02mm and 0.001” graduations and have two separate pointers for each unit. The dial is large and clearly marked in red for inches and black for mm. It is easy to read, and you can get the measurement in both inches and millimeters at the same time. However, it does not allow for readings in inch fractions which is the standard for working in inches. I find this to be a bit of an inconvenience. The zero-setting locking thumb screw locks the dial in place securely. I have a cheaper digital caliper from eight years ago that has served me well. It is made of plastic and reads in inch fractions, decimals, and millimeters. I used that digital caliper, and some setup blocks I had to compare with this SK Tools caliper. The four tests I did with setup blocks as reference read as follows: Reference: 1/6” (0.0625”, 1.5875mm) Reading: 0.064”, 1.64mm Error: +0.002”, +0.05mm Reference: 5/32” (0.15625”, 3.96875mm) Reading: 0.156”, 3.99mm Error: +0.000”, +0.02mm Reference: 3/8” (0.375”, 9.525mm) Reading: 0.376”, 9.58mm Error: +.001”, +0.06mm Reference: 3/4" (0.75”, 19.05mm) Reading: 0.751”, 19.06mm Error: +0.001, +0.01mm Stated accuracy for the caliper is 0.001” and 0.03mm. The inch readings are very good in accuracy for majority of the uses. I used the inch fraction readings in the digital caliper with the same reference blocks, and it gave measurements in matching exact fractions. Its accuracy is 1/128” or 0.0078”, which is not as accurate as this caliper. For accuracy and quality, this is a five-star product in my opinion. ... show more

  • Very precise for analog
Very good quality measuring caliper. It is made of nice sturdy metals and is easily readable. The dial moves smoothly and is a nice analog measurement comparable to a digital in terms of accuracy. At least to a certain degree. I do like the digital better but for the price, these are definitely nice and worth it. Sk is a very reputable and of high quality. ... show more

  • Well made set of manual calipers
For a manual caliper, this one is quite nice. It's very well made, and one indication is its weight. When you pick it up, it weighs a good bit for its size. The face of the dial is plastic though, and doesn't feel as quality as the rest of the caliper. Operation is pretty simple and as expected if you've ever used one before. The rolling knobs move the caliper opened or closed, and the thumb screw locks the dial in place once positioned. The case is nice and well made too, with a little foam padding inside for it to rest on, but there isn't any on the lid. The dial is easy to read, though if you're like me and sometimes need reading glasses, you'll definitely need them here. They included a little folding manual, and the explanations are good, but if you need those instructions, they're hard to read when explaining how to read the dial because it's so small. I'd suggest they magnify the dial in the instructions for easier reading. Best of all, this has both metric and standard measurements, and even a simple conversion reminder printed on the face of the dial, but again, difficult to read due to it being small. But at least it's there so you don't need to whip out the instructions. Overall, a well made, manual caliper. I'm pretty happy with it, and there's no batteries to worry about replacing or leaking when you need it most. ... show more

  • Solid Calipers at a Reasonable Price Solid Calipers at a Reasonable Price
This SK dial caliper is a well built tool with a solid, durable feel. It looks and feels comparable to my Starret and better than my Craftsman. The stainless steel construction feels robust, and the overall fit and finish are better than what you see on cheaper calipers. The slide action is smooth, the dial is clear and legible, and the tool appears capable of holding up well to daily use. The dual SAE/metric scale takes the place of my 2 separate dial calipers. Having both inch and metric graduations on one instrument reduces the need to keep multiple measuring tools on hand and can even be used for conversions. Like almost all dial calipers it has 4 functions: outside, inside, depth, and step measurements . The stated accuracy of ±0.001 inch / 0.03 mm is typical and expected. The only noticeable weakness is the storage case. The case fits the tool well, but the bendable plastic hinge feels like a cost-cutting detail found on cheaper tools. For a tool that otherwise presents as solid and professional, the hinge does not inspire the same confidence in long-term durability. I own a lot of SK tools and am very happy with them. I even have old SK tools from when they were USA made. SK leans hard on the American brand identity, but these are made in Taiwan. They are still solid, quality tools that will last a lifetime. SK does maintain the quality they are known for. ... show more
