  • excellent novel
Not a typical L'Amour western. If you're looking for a western shoot 'em up, this is not the novel for you. It is an excellent story of Alaska becoming part of the United States. Read this originally when it first came out in 1957; don't remember whether I finished it or not, but it wasn't what I was looking for at the time. This time I found it quite enjoyable. Don't expect it to be a Sackett type story. I would recommend it to anyone who is more interested in history than gunfights. ... show more

  • Nice Historical Fiction
I first read this when it first came out in the mid 80’s and read it a few times over the years. Unfortunately, it got lost in a move over ten years ago and as I am trekking back through all of my Louis L’Amour titles, I was disappointed to know this one was not on Kindle. Now that it was released in the Kindle version this summer, I promptly pre-ordered it and waited…it was well worth the wait. This is not your typical Louis L’Amour western, and it is more of a historical fiction novel that teaches you a bit about history and early frontier times in California and Alaska. L'Amour was not one of the most technical or long-winded writers, he was short, succinct, and to the point and had a way that grabs you into the story immediately and he does so with this one. The descriptions of the scenery, events, people, and situations made you feel as if you were right there living it side-by-side with his characters. This book is longer than your typical L’Amour title and as I type this review, this book is $5.12 in the Kindle format - you'll get a lot more than $5.12 of entertainment out of this one. ... show more

  • One of my favorite L'Amour stories...which is saying something!
Louis L'Amour is one of my favorite authors. He also, unintentionally, became one of my favorite history teachers. My dad had uprooted us from the California Mojave Desert to go to Southeast Alaska. He was a retired Marine who became a logger in the Tongass forest, as well as a small-scale commercial fisherman. He would drag me along on fishing trips, as well as a Voyage to bring his boat from Sitka to Kake. We traveled much of the same route Jean used to escape sitka....even winding up trapped by weather in the place where the Susquahanah made it's portage. We hadn't read this book then, but I told dad it was too bad that we couldn't drag our 26 foot boat across to get into the straight we were SUPPOSED to have turned into. I said someone should build a small track to make it possible...for a fee. Dad said I was crazy. We'll? This proves that great minds think alike ... show more

  • Another triumph for Louis L'Amour!
I learned a lot of things about Alaska through this book. I know that Mr. L'Amour always did extensive research for his books and so many of the details are true. What a hero, what a powerful tale. In Mr. L'Amour's tales good always wins over evil.

  • fantastic book
This was a masterpiece of plot, characters and pace. Woven into the history and majesty of the United States and Alaska, the tale brings adventure, politics and romance in a vibrant tale of the new frontier.
