Very clear optics with easy to see cross hairs, range adjustment and focus makes it easy to use and install.     • A real bargain - higher than expected quality.

This scope is quite a bargain - well worth the money. I had been looking at a Nikon ProStaff scope, but the price was a little much for me as a casual shooter. I read the reviews and took a chance on this Simmons scope and was pleasantly surprised. As an astronomy buff, I was not sure I would be happy with the optical quality of the scope. I did notice that there is some barrel distortion and color fringing - especially noticeable above 7x, but the color fringing is limited to the edge of the field and the barrel distortion (the appearance that the field is curved, rather than flat) is well corrected when my eye is at the correct distance. Eye relief is fine, I wear glasses, and no-line bifocals at that; this scope still gives me a clear view edge to edge when the rifle is held in shooting stance. The 50mm objective gives plenty of light, and resolves details very well. I have no problem picking out the individual strands in a barb-wire fence from 100 meters out at 7x. The scope was easy to zero (no tools required) and the controls were quite precise. One 20-round magazine was sufficient to zero in my Mossberg 223 at 100 yards, and to learn how to compensate accurately out to 200 yards - the limit of my personal accuracy and shooting comfort. I would have preferred a more sophisticated reticle - but the simple triplex reticle will likely be sufficient for me in 95% of the shooting situations I'll find myself in.     • Great scope optically but not actually fogproof/waterproof.
(This review is by a family member, not by Lilia) Update in June 2018: The fog did disappear after a few days and haven't used it in the rain since. Power/zoom ring is less stiff now. Optical clarity is still good but haven't compared it yet to a more expensive scopes with fully-multicoated glass; only compared it to $50 scopes from UTG and AIM. I have shot it only during daytime or at night on a well-lighted range so can't say if it works well at dusk/dawn. I have recently used it a few times at 100 and 200 yards on a bolt-action .308 and got 5-shot groups as good as 1.5" at 100 yards and 2.5" at 200 yards, but not sure if the group size is more due to the gun, ammo, or shooting technique. My only complaint (other than it not being fogproof) is the W/E dial clicks are mushy and quiet and not always consistent--turning the dials always moves the point of impact in the correct direction but not always by the same amount. Another comment is that if you are doing precision shooting at 200 yards or more where 1/2" on the target matters, you'll want a scope with a higher top-end magnification range (like 4-12x, 4.5x14x, 4x16x, or 5x20x) and adjustable parallax. But that's not a knock on this scope, just a comment. === <original review below> The scope performs nicely but is not waterproof/fogproof as advertised. Have had it about 2 months and used it at range for about 300 rounds of .223/5.56 at 40, 50 and 100 yards. The scope is bright, clear and accurate, giving great performance for the price. It has held zero so far. However the clicks on the windage and elevation knobs are very soft--hard to feel and impossible to hear. So you need to turn them carefully to know how many clicks you've adjusted. Also, after 45 minutes in a light cool (50F) rain it fogged up on the inside of the front (objective) lens, despite the scope being advertised as waterproof and fogproof. Note that first I bought this scope used from Amazon but the reticle was rotating, so sent it back for refund and bought a new one from Amazon, which has been great other than the rain/fog thing. If it dries out okay I'll keep it; if it doesn't dry out, will ask Simmons to warranty it. But then it was like a $45 scope so probably I should either use it only in dry weather or stop complaining and buy a $150 scope. Pros: Accurate to at least 100 yards (probably more), bright, clear, holds zero (so far), easy to focus diopter correction and low price. Also has good eye relief and sharp cross-hairs in center of reticle. Cons: Zoom ring stiff (difficult to turn), windage/elevation knobs have mushy clicks, fogged up after one use in light rain. ... show more

    • Good scope for the money. All you need unless you're real picky.
I've mounted this and used it five or six times on my very old Ruger 10/22. It holds zero. I can't really use the 7-9 magnification: the resolution just isn't there, but 4-6 is just fine at .22 long rifle ranges. Sighting it in without a bore scope was no problem, just start at close range and walk it out. The clicks are extremely small increments. When you're mounting it, give it all the rear eye relief you can get. I could use more. It doesn't want to focus at close distances at high magnification. I have the focus all the way back. The scope is acceptably bright up to about 7 power. Beyond that, look for bright sunlight targets. I couldn't stand the elastic-band covers that came with it, and bought a 46mm lens cap for the front end, objective lens, from China off eBay for 99 cents with free shipping. I store my long weapons vertically, so I don't see any need for a cover for the viewing lens (rear) end. I am very glad I spent a few bucks more to get the larger front end diameter. You need to watch it with the rings and mounts, clearance-wise. But as close to the bore-axis as you can get is the way to go in order to minimize over/under holds in front of and behind your sight-in point. Certainly with something with a baseball trajectory like a .22 regular rimfire. Overall, I am impressed with the feel of rugged construction and quality. Whatever Chinese factory made this lens is up there with the people who make Canon and Nikon and Apple products, in my opinion, based upon this one sample of a Simmons scope. Last, the Simmons telephone people were not much help on ring and mount selection. So do your homework. ... show more

I purchased two of this scope; the first 4 years ago and the second 2 years ago. I have one mounted on a Mini-14 (.223) and the other mounted on a Marlin XL7 30-06. I absolutely love this scope. I used a laser boresighter to get the scope somewhat close to zero and then took both rifles to the range. I was on paper with both rifles and had both zeroed in no time. I put 60 rounds through the Mini-14 and 10 rounds through the XL7. The scope held true throughout the entire trip, even with the heavier caliber. I have several different brands of scopes (including high dollar Leupolds and Nikons) and on a range, this scope performs just as well as the others. Eye relief is about what I expected for a < $100 scope, but visibility is still great. While I would recommend it more for plinking or hunting applications such as varmint or hog, I'm sure it would work for larger game as well up to distances of about 125-150 yards. Outside of that, I would advise stepping up to the 4x12. This scope has remained on both rifles and I still target practice with it and hunt varmint/hog with it to this day. Bottom line: if you can't afford the high-dollar scopes or you want a good scope for a low-valued rifle, this scope is the winning ticket. ... show more

    • You get a lot of parallax
You get a lot of parallax . Mounted this on my 25Cal PCP. You move your eye around and the cross hairs will move around your zero. Not a tack driver scope. The CVLIFE 3-9x40 Optics R4 Reticle Crosshair Scope is a little better if you are looking for an inexpensive scope to give you a dime shot group now and then at 25 yards. I have a Tasco World Class on my GAMO urban that allows you to stack at 25 yards. I used to be able to get these for about the same price a year or so ago. But no longer sadly. ... show more

Several years ago I built a 6.5 Swedish Mauser to hunt with. The rifle was completely rebuilt to be lightweight and accurate by bedding the action etc. I bought the scope because #1, I could afford it and #2 it was lightweight plus a 50mm objective. Since the rifle was light and the scope was also light they were a perfect match. I sighted everything in and it has stayed on zero for years now. I've killed deer at 140+ yards. It's always dead on the money. It's shocking that a scope this cheap is outperforming many other brands much more expensive. It doesn't have the bells and whistles that a lot of modern scopes have. It's an old fashioned set and forget. Your not going to play GI Joe sniper with this thing. It's a hunting scope. It does its job and does it well. ... show more
