  • Best 50mm Prime for Sony Alpha Mount - and a great value to boot.
Style: Sony Set: US Version
The Sigma 50 1.4 Art, like all the Sigma Art series lenses, is a value ‘home run’. This lens is $500 less than competing (and admittedly excellent) Zeiss 50 1.4, but is sharper in the corners at virtually any aperture, with about the same central sharpness. Easier to MFA precisely too, given firmware dock. Won’t allow H-AF on the A99ii obviously, which is a significant downside compared to the CZ, but only if shooting in wide modes and wanting features like eye focus when subject is wide in the frame. Still works great with PDAF 79 AF points, so I don’t really miss H-AF much at all on this lens. As for the weight, well, it’s all tradeoffs. Can’t get this kind of optical quality, including particularly wide open sharpness, without big glass elements. PROS: 1) Sharpness and more sharpness. This lens has detail to beat the band, and with excellent microcontrast. 2) Great build quality. Proverbial brick sh-- house. 3) Easy to very finely MFA with USB Sigma dock (four different values possible). 4) Excellent control over CA (better than CZ 50 1.4). 5) Great value for the $. Better lens overall than pricier CZ. CONS: 1) Weight and size. Big as some 24-70’s? Instead of ‘Nifty Fifty’ Sigma must have thought of ‘Chunky Monkey?’ 2) Slightly funky AF behavior in low light. Sigma reverse engineering of Sony codes? 3) Not much else to speak of, except that Sigma may not be making these any more for A Mount, such that once stock runs out, that may be it. If so, that’s very disappointing, and suggests that you should get one NOW. ... show more

  • HORRIBLE focus issues
Style: Sony Set: US Version
This lens has an absolutely HORRIBLE focus issue. Front focus seems to be the biggest of the problems, but it is horrendous. For a product that costs so much, I would expect a much better quality. When it does work, it's wonderful, but it's less than a 50/50 chance each time.

  • NOT fully compatible with Sony Hybrid AF System
Style: Sony Set: US Version
I am a big fan of Sigma Art series lenses and definitely believe the optical quality to be on par with OEM lenses. That said, when mounted to a Sony camera with their hybrid AF system, the lens does not support the entire set of focus points. On my Sony A99 II, the lens only uses the 79 phase detection AF sensors and will NOT use the entire 323 hybrid sensor array. This significantly reduces the speed of AF operations. As good a lens as this is, it is very disappointing to have such reduced functionality. On contacting Sigma to ask for a FW update or other support, they stated that the lens 'fully supports all functions of the A99 II'. When challenged, they then stated that it supports the A99 II in 'non-compatible mode only'. That's a big functionality gap for a top tier camera body. The quality is a 5, but the lack of support for this amazon camera is a 2. Therefore, the best I can do is a 3 for this product. ... show more

  • Does NOT fit Sony E mount camera.
Style: Sony Set: US Version
Clearly says "lens for Sony A" however this lens does not fit my sony a7s ii. According to Sigma website, this lens is for the sony E mount and should work and mount just fine. Even the cap on the lens says Sigma for Sony, but does NOT mount to my a7s ii E mount. Frustrating, but Amazon customer service was great at handling the issue. ... show more
