  • Sharpness of the image using an a6300 in 4K 30fps with metabones speed booster can't be beat for a wide ZOOM lens!!! STUNNING!!
Style: Sony Set: US Version
There's NO WAY there's a better video lens for the a6300 (if it is appropriate to use, meaning for being close up, or for wanting to be wide). WELL-- first let me state 2 things, first off, I am using the metabones speed booster adapter for Sony A mount to Sony E mount, and THIS set up sets this lens on FIRE, turning an F1.8 into an F1.3, which is the KING set up PERIOD. There's nothing like it, AND it's affordable. This lens is for APSC sensors, or APSC mode, not for full frame 35mm sensors. ALSO: Use of the metabones focal reducer (speed booster) is best suited for the cropped sensor version you get on the a6300 shooting in 4K at 30fps. When you try to use other modes, even 24fps 4K will cause vignetting on the lower range of focus, and some 18mm to 22mm will have vignetting. NEVERTHELESS--- go ahead and use it in 4K at 30fps, and THIS is just incredible what you get!! less than 2 meters from a subject, you can capture the entire room, and still zoom all the way in, and make your subject larger than life!! I just shot 2 days in the studio in North Carolina, and then an event the following day, all 3 days using this combo, (Sigma 18 35 with metabones speedbooster on a6300). I am certain auto focus is NOT something you would want to mess with, as trying to take stills using auto focus does NOT work, and that is an issue that makes me wish I had purchased the version of this Sigma 18 35 for CANON, and then the more expensive metabones adapter, but THEN be able to use the Sigma MC-11 adapter that is claiming native auto focus! (anyone tried that with VIDEO??) Me and my Dad can't believe what we just saw, even on our old 1080, 63 inch plasma TV, that was the most amazing footage of ANYTHING we have ever seen!! SO sharp, it's like looking through a WINDOW! The mics on the a6300 are WAY better than the a6000 now, and VERY decent, although of course not PRO audio grade. Don't EVEN question it if you are intending to shoot 4K with either the a6300, or using crop mode for your A7sii, and A7rii. For that matter, who has footage from an FS5 or FS7 using this Sigma lens and metabones speed booster?? THEN you could still keep zooming in!! THAT must be just out of control at F1.3!! ALSO-- this must be a monster low-light combo with the A7sii, which I will shoot next chance I get!! GOD!! I just wish I could include footage, but that would be a copyright issue to even send a link at this point, but YEAH, this is PRO grade stuff BY FAR in a VERY in-expensive package for some $2250, a6300/metabones speed-booster/Sigma 18mm to 35mm Art (and a tripod, this lens is not stabilized, and neither is the camera, BUT tripod duty does GREAT, and this has to be the most portable PRO 4K set up you could possibly get, for an amateur level price, for sure!! If you then get a Shogun or similar 4K recorder and monitor, YES, this is in FACT professional grade, although my Atomos Shogun Flame did not arrive in time for my event, forcing me to record internally, which I did with no overheating, and I managed just fine to NAIL focus. My eyes are perfect, but I did use the EVF, not the 3 inch LCD, which is borderline worthless, especially when using a wide lens. SO-- I will be keeping this a6300 in my bag with an A7sii, and A7rii, and of course, this lens is going to be used whenever possible just to get that shockingly SHARP image!! BAD ASS LENS!! Does very well shooting stills too, although using an laea3 could definitely be better auto focus, and using the laea4 would cost you the light you just added with the speed booster adapter. I was happiest using manual focus, and when zooming, it stayed "sharp as a tack", although it is softer on the edges than it is in the center, but it actually is an "ARTSY" effect that looks VERY nice, and puts extra emphasis on the subject in the center, so GREAT for shooting MUSIC events both in a studio environment, and concerts where you are either close, or want to get EVERYTHING in view, (or BOTH-- and then if you stick that on an FS5, you could keep zooming in from there!!) I'll be getting into an FS5 as well, especially now that I have several amazing E mount lenses and adapters. ... show more

  • Good Lens But Slow AF
Style: Sony Set: US Version
This is indeed a sharp lens. It is bulky (much larger than one would think). The colors are neutral and the images are hard to fault. Very good for indoor and outdoor shooting. Construction is sturdy even though it has lots of plastic parts. I didn't notice any bothersome distortions. For Sony cameras, it's actually a very good choice because it doesn't have any major color casts and is even on the less saturated side, so it minimizes various color casts inherent in Sony rendering when white balance isn't calibrated to a strict 6500K daylight setting. Its one major flaw is focus speed. For photography, it's pretty slow when shifting larger distances. But, the focus speed works out well for video. It's very quiet and moves smoothly. I think this lens was optimized for video. But then again, such a large lens for APSc sensors might not be good for moving about. It'll work fine on larger setups though. ... show more

  • The best lens I have ever used for my Sony camera
Style: Sony Set: US Version
The one I own is for Sony A-mount cameras. Early this year, I sold my Sony A57 and got the A5100--a E-mount camera. So I now use this lens with an adapter and need to shoot everything manually but still, it works great. I get great image quality consistently. This is, without a single doubt, the best lens I've ever used. It's a "zoom" lens with a "constant" F1.8 aperture, so you can expect great low light performance at any focal length from this lens. The only con for me is the lens is really heavy and long for my A5100, but I can still shoot great video without a problem. Here's my video that I shot with the A5100 + Sigma 18-35mm at Knott's Berry Farm: https://youtu.be/khZvBZQNygQ ... show more

  • 5 Stars Isn't Enough! (EDIT: 3 Stars Until Replacement; See Review)
Style: Sony Set: US Version
************************ UPDATES AT END ************************ Used on a Sony A6000 + LA-EA2 adapter. I always have reservations about buying something that's so highly regarded, since usually the hype never matches the reality, or my expectations. This is one of the rare occasions that it does, and even surpasses it. This is the sharpest normal zoom lens I've ever used. And I've used the Nikon 17-55mm F/2.8, Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8, and Nikon 24-70mm F/2.8. Wide open, it's as sharp as or sharper than some high quality primes! The contrast kicks in around F/2.8, but that's not to say the lens is hazy at wider apertures. It's perfectly usable, and stopping down only makes things even more impressive. I took this lens to the New York International Auto Show two days after I got it, and when you're not in pixel peeping mode, it's hard to tell which images are shot at F/1.8 vs F/5.6, besides the out of focus areas. The fit and finish on this lens is top notch, even though it's only made of plastic. The lens is a bit hefty, but you'll see that in most top tier fast zooms, and nothing is faster than this one. The zoom ring is nicely weighted, and the focus ring doesn't stick or feel loose while manually focusing like some modern lenses can. The AF/MF switch is in just the right place when holding the camera, and has a positive click. The AF is also quick and nearly silent (only the photographer would hear it) for photo use. A bit noisy for video with the camera's built-in mic, so you'll want to use an external mic instead. In the end, if you're thinking about getting this lens, the only question on your mind should be "is 35mm long enough for me?" As far as anything else in the equation, Sigma has you covered better than anyone else. If 35mm is long enough, there's no reason to hold off on this lens. If not, go out and get this lens and a 50mm prime! ;) PS: I'd HIGHLY recommend getting the Sigma USB Dock with this lens, at only $60 extra. All zooms are known to be a bit off on focus on one end or the other to varying extents. Initially, mine was mostly off at 18 and 24mm, while 35mm was nearly perfect. After calibration, this lens is spot on, tack sharp, every time. Not only do you get the best normal zoom available, it can also be your most consistently accurate autofocus lens, too! ************************ UPDATE 5/8/15 I've been having some serious AF consistency issues with this lens. With static subjects, is as good as your average lens in locking accurately, but with moving subjects, it's a whole different story. The lens tends to lock in front of or behind the subject at least 1/3 of the time. Of course, you can't expect accurate focusing 100% of the time with phase detection, especially when shooting wide open at F/1.8, but the amount that the focus is off is more than just an inch or two, even when stopped down. On a large percentage of shots, the lens will lock onto the background of the image, whether it be a wall or another person standing behind the subject, even if the focus point isn't even in the neighborhood of the background. I purchased the Sigma USB Dock for Sony A-mount lenses (not available on Amazon at the time) when I initially purchased this lens, and calibrated it so focus was spot on. Took a few hours to complete, due to the multiple focal lengths vs calibrating a prime. But all of that work did nothing to improve the accuracy on moving subjects. I learned that the hard when when I shot an event the weekend after receiving the lens. Whether it was broad daylight or very dim overhead lighting, the inconsistency was consistent. I spent a few weeks after that refining the calibration, but nothing has changed. Temporarily moving the rating down to 3 stars, as the optics are still incredible (the in-focus photos at the above event were outstanding!), but without reliable AF, the lens isn't useful for what it excels at: events, especially in low light. I'm sending the lens back to Amazon for a replacement, which will hopefully have proper AF ability. ************************ ... show more
