  • It's a great lens!
Style: Nikon SLR Mount Set: Lens Only
Being it's still so difficult to find reviews of this lens, and it's now the holiday season, here's a limited pic first impression mounted on a Nikon D5100. When compared to the latest Sigma 18-250mm Macro lens this lens feels of better build quality, noticeably heavier up front, stiffer zooming (not a bad thing), noticeably sharper images...seemingly across the full zoom, feels about the same focusing speed across all lighting/zoom...possibly a tad faster, stabilization seems about the same...possibly a tad better, BUT...WOW THIS LENS BREATHS LIKE A DRANGON. You can actually feel the air being forced through the camera. Some have commented about the Nikon 55-300mm lens being a dust sucker, I don't find that lens too terrible, but I'm pretty sure this lens will have that one beat hands down...unfortunately. My particular lens does have a noticeable "click" when ending its focus hunt, possibly a parking mechanism for gears?, and its focus is dead on right out of the box. Barrel distortion isn't too bad, chromatic aberration doesn't appear to be either, but with the built-in flash I've gotten a few shots with a half moon on the bottom from the lens blocking the flash. At this point I'd have to call this lens a buy, bearing in mind it might not be the best choice for a dusty environment. If you're after a versatile family lens this lens can catch my 18 month old grandson indoors, in low lighting, clearly...and he never stops moving, not even in his sleep. Deer out in the field, snowscapes, birds at the feeder, Jack-frost paintings, snowflakes,...hopefully its longevity matches its versatility. ... show more

  • Sigma makes a good super zoom.
Style: Nikon SLR Mount Set: Lens Only
The lens manufacturers have been making super zooms for a long time it shows in this lens. It looks like they have worked out the issues of have such a wide range. It’s sharp and I am not seeing distortion. The macro is sharp and their is good depth of field at the smaller f stops. The image stabilization works great even hand holding macro with flash. It as sharp on macro as my 40mm Nikon macro nikor. The difference is the nikor can go 1 to 1 and the sigma is 1 to 3 or 1 to 2 with the optional closeup lens made for it. The closeup lens works great. I love this lens. ... show more

  • for almost 3x the cost, you get a lens which is probably 2.5x more useful as the other sigma 300mm zoom
Style: Nikon SLR Mount Set: Lens Only
This lens follows the "you get what you pay for" mantra. I started with the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 SLD DG Macro Lens with built in motor for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, as my entry into a stronger zoom lens. One advantage of the f/4-5.6 is the faster speed at farther zoom, however, when really put to use that advantage is not as clear. I've been using these to catch graduation events, auditorium snapshots, and other people-type activities. Between the two, this Sigma Contemporary lens fairs better, but at 3x the cost. The f/4-5.6 lens is a really good lens. for the price, it is unbeatable, and the open aperture is a benefit, especially indoors. It starts to get soft to my eye past 225mm, and without a tripod you can't count on reliable shots at those distances. However, it's also a little lighter weight, especially during carry or if hung around the neck. The Contemporary lens is stiff, heavy, and versatile. The optical stabilization makes a noted difference, and with care, distance shots can be made decent without a tripod. It is more crisp when zoomed in far than the other. It does require silly-high iso settings to adjust for the slower aperture. This becomes the compromise - slightly more noise vs clarity of the subject. I'm seeing that people I'm send these pictures to notice focus and clarity more than they notice noise, so the compromise seems to favor this lens. The slower aperture precludes it from being my preferred lens for general walk-around or any other time I'm not anticipating the need for the strong zoom. For those times, Sigma's other lens in the Contemporary line has much more open glass and takes more vibrant pictures. Bottom line, for almost 3x the cost, you get a lens which is probably 2.5x as useful as the other sigma 300mm zoom. You're still paying a premium, but you can get more out of it. ... show more

  • Very good quality lens for travel and daily shooting
Style: Nikon SLR Mount Set: Lens Only
Received the lens today and took some pictures. It's a great lens to carry on, not too heavy and no need to change lenses for daily shooting. The images are very good. I got the used one for only $278. It's a great value.

  • Wide to super-telephoto, a great lens
Style: Canon SLR Mount Set: Lens Only
I really love the 18-300 Sigma lens (Canon EF mount). When used on the Canon 90D (APS-C sensor) focal length is 28-480. It has great contrast. Out of the box I found the zoom ring to be a bit stiff, but it seems to be getting better with use. The focus ring is in close proximity to the zoom ring so, you have to be careful that your fingers are not overlapping onto the focus ring lest you interfere with the auto-focus function of the lens. Very good bayonet mount lens hood. Beware: The lens instructions say the Lens Stabilization Feature can be damaged if you do not shut down the camera before changing the lens, I would have to recommend you be careful as most Canon lenses do not carry this warning. Overall, I am very pleased. ... show more
