  • Comprehensive and Informative Guide for DIY Projects
As a DIY enthusiast, I found this book on siding, roofing, and trim to be incredibly useful. Recently, I tackled a home improvement project that involved replacing some old, worn-out siding, and this guide provided the detailed instructions I needed. What I appreciated most was the clarity of the explanations and the step-by-step approach. The illustrations were particularly helpful in visualizing each process. I also liked how the book covered a wide range of topics, making it a valuable resource for multiple aspects of home improvement. One thing that could be improved is the inclusion of more modern materials and techniques, as some parts seemed a bit dated. However, the fundamental principles are still highly relevant and applicable. This book has certainly earned a spot on my shelf as a go-to reference for future projects. ... show more

  • Best of the series
I own many of the books in this series, and many other general home-improvement type books. I wish I had bought this one sooner; it contains the best information I've found for dealing with trim, siding, roofing, and painting. In short, it covers all of the most common advanced-DIY/professional handy-person projects. Sure, it doesn't comprehensively cover all the basics, but this is a great reference for the modern world where you can get basics and product information from Youtube. The book contains specific details about best practices for specific projects/challenges - It is not a completely generic how-to guide. The photos and drawings are some of the best in the For Pros By Pros series. ... show more

  • Lots of great info, but really for pro's (like the title says...)
I'm not a professional, so please take this review with a grain of salt. I found an immense amount of detail in this book, and this resource would probably be most useful to someone who is involved in this activity on a daily basis. The book had a few shortcomings, primarily those centered around the illustrations, which in some cases had way too much detail in each. They would have been better broken down into smaller "chunks". I also found the discussion of siding materials to be very limited, and was surprised to not see LP Smartside or materials similar to that discussed at all. ... show more

  • Not a good source for aluminum trim
Not a good reference book for doing aluminum trim.

  • Great reference.
Good informative book. Basics for a newby, but enough detail and advanced techniques to keep an old hand interested.

  • I’d expect much better from an otherwise great line of home building books
I’ve bought a handful of other F.P.B.P. Books and have been really happy with them. I’ve been a mason by trade and even bought that book to refresh myself on the basics or things I don’t always work on. This book lacks significantly in a handful of critical areas and I could hardly believe it paging through the first time. Other reviews have mentioned that there is not much about siding or trim; that’s true. There are a couple good bits about venting and eaves which is nice, but more there would be good as well. Almost all the technical, well illustrated stuff is about asphalt shingles. There’s a page each on slate, metal, tile or other types of roofing material. A lot of time is spent on laying shingles in valleys, which is good, but almost nothing is said about ridges, and nothing at all about hips, a common feature. My house is a hip roof as are the vast majority in my neighborhood, there isn’t even a single photo of that style roof. That’s a big problem in my opinion. Nothing is said about built in gutters, or vent pipes, only a little blurb about roof vents, another little blurb about a vertical sideing to roof transition, nothing about any other alternative roof variations that I’d think a significant number of houses have. If you need a book to learn roofing, find out what/why other roofing materials might be right for you, or help you with anything but the most basic repair or installation, this book won’t help you. ... show more
