My right shure 535 died, figured I'd try one of these, then regretted ordering them for the cost. Put them in once, I am stuck with them forever. Such clear sound, my hearing isn't as good as it used to be, but they're the best I've ever heard by FAR, they make my 535s sound like the earbuds they hand out on airplanes. Just flawless, and the range is exquisite. I don't like to be the audiophile who can only listen to speakers made from pure unobtainium, and they are ludicriously expensive, but damn they sound just perfect. ... show more

I do love them and use them every day. Went from Aonic 5s to these, there isn't a $400 IMO if you're thinking of upgrading. I did get them on a discount but they aren't worth $900.

    • Corporate greed at its worst

I've owned numerous pairs of Shure IEMs over the years including the SE425, SE535, SE846 - even their electrostatic earphone system, but the company's policy on their new "Gen 2" version of the SE846 is a textbook case of corporate laziness and greed. The 846s originally debuted nearly 10 years ago and I've owned a pair since 2019, so I was curious to hear about the Pro Gen 2 version; however, the ONLY difference (i.e., update) they've made in almost 10 years is to include a new "Expanded" filter, which is quite possibly as useless as the Bright and Warm filters that shipped with the original (the Balanced filter is the only one that sounds good IMO). I say "quite possibly" because I wouldn't know - Shure REFUSES to sell the Expanded filter to anyone not willing to shell out another $900 for the exact same set of headphones (she actually told me they REQUIRE proof of purchase of a Gen 2 before they'll sell anyone an Expanded replacement filter). Evidently, they're willing to lose a lifelong customer over a $2 piece of plastic. Yeah, the 846s were great when they debuted (and still sound fairly good), but Shure has gotten lazy and not really developed anything "top-of-the-line" new in years, as opposed to most other high-end manufacturers who regularly debut newer models with upgraded technology; clearly their customer service leaves much to be desired. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere… For example, Campfire Audio has VERY good headphones, and regularly develops new models/updates existing ones with tangible/significant upgrades in design that might actually warrant purchasing a newer pair. I own a pair of their Solaris 2020 and had an issue with the finish rubbing off despite taking great care with them (it was even outside their normal two-year warranty period); I contacted them directly, they acknowledged the issue, said to send them in and they'd replace them with a brand-new pair - they even threw in another one of their $200 cables for the inconvenience. This as opposed to the crappy, stock (unbalanced-only) cable that still ships with the 846s. The equivalent CA headphone would most likely be their revered Andromeda (five B.A. design vs. the SE846's four B.A. drivers), which has been tangibly refined a couple times since their initial release several years back; yeah, they're a bit more expensive, but they almost always get better reviews than the 846s, now ship with three upgraded cables (including two balanced termination options), and are designed, manufactured and sold right here in the USA. I cannot personally speak to this particular model (Andromeda) since I've never owned a pair, but I can certainly attest to how much better the Solaris sound vs. the SE846, as well as Campfire Audio's level of customer service and dedication to their craft… ... show more
