  • Tons of value for price. Record to direct to IOS device is killer extra. Maybe a Snowball Killer
I have had this a few days and putting it through it's paces. This is a wonderful piece of gear for the price. The sound quality is quite excellent. It's a little warmer and fuller than a SnowBall. It's much smaller and easier to position. And, it's got monitoring function for headphones. That's a lot of features. It has three sound signature settings (one is dead flat) and they are very useful. Some have noted disappointment that it's plastic frame rather than metal. I do not get that criticism. I mean, portability is one of it's two claims to great value, so who wants to lug around a heavy ball of metal to have metal? This looks great and is very well made. The plastic is high quality and looks good, and besides, when you drop the mic (and you will eventually drop the mic), this does not have all the added weight of a lot of metal to add to the shock for the internals. The stand is adequate and kind of good looking. It's well made and designed. The other great thing about this mic is it's number one advantage over most other mics for purposes people are likely interested in this: you can plug it right into an IOS device because it works with lightening connection. That's amazing. That means I can take my iPad with an app like TwistedWave (great great app) and get high quality sounds right into my iPad while monitoring with headphones out the back of the mic. That's a whole lot of function for $99. Sounds great. Loads of options. Attractive. Great size for not taking up too much space on desk. If you want to pay a bit more and get better sound, get an AT2020 from Audio Technica. But this delivers excellent sounds with portability, smaller size, and that cool ability to record right to an IOS device (if you like). Ability to have headphone monitoring right off the mic with a volume control at this price point and sound quality is another big plus. Update after using for months. I love this mic. As noted, I have a better quality mic but I don’t use it anymore. This mic from Shure is too perfect a combo of size, features, and performance. I recently recorded a video for YouTube streaming with my iPad Pro using this mic. Flawless performance. Produced great output which was edited then with iMovie for good result. To have the option of recording high quality audio with lightning input is so useful. It has also performed marvelously as a usb mic with both Window 10 machine and MacBook. (Side point. Windows is not way outperforming MAC os for easily producing good results with HD webcam and good mic. Apple needs to step it up.) This mic produces superior, great sound for voice for audio or audio/video recording. Buying a second one to keep at other office. ... show more

  • Lots of utility in a small package
This is a wonderful desktop microphone. Awesome, clear sound quality especially when a little effort is put into proper placement. I use a camera tripod to lift it up to my face and my voice sounds great. This is easy to do because the microphone has a standard sized hole for any tripod. I also occasionally record my guitar using this, and that sounds good too. There is a separate setting for recording instruments and recording voice. Something I didn't realize until recently is that this microphone has audio pass-through. I'm not sure why this isn't touted as the greatest feature of the product, but it is. As you can see in the picture, I have my headphones plugged into the back of the microphone. This allows me to hear not only the sound from the microphone (such as myself speaking), but also the audio from the computer it's plugged into. There is also a gain knob which allows you to control the volume of the headphones. No issues with the knob, it works well (I've heard some similar gain knobs are terrible). I have no complaints. There is a lot to love about this little affordable microphone. ... show more

  • Great little microphone, poor cable design and construction
I bought this mike 2 months ago to record and live-stream videos of small music performances (voice, piano, woodwinds) from home using my iPhone. Its compactness and direct iOS compatibility sold me and I was expecting only average sound quality. The actual sound quality and convenience of the on-board processing modes has been great, and rivals professional Shure mikes I've used in the past. To my surprise, the on-board processing modes cover most of my needs, some of which have had pretty stressing dynamic range requirements. I've mostly used iOS apps to record, and only occasionally needed Shure's MOTIV apps. The (large) disappointment has been the microphone's output port and the iOS Lightning cable that comes with the microphone. The first thing you notice is that a 3 ft cord is not nearly long enough if the iPhone (video) is on a tripod but the microphone (audio) is not. That leads you to ordering a longer cord, where you soon discover: 1. The micro-B USB connector on the mike is pretty obsolete and was not commonly used in the past, so you will find very few micro-USB to Lightning cords on line. 2. When you do find one, it will not work with this mike. Apparently, Shure's design for the interface is proprietary and the only cord that will work is the short one furnished by Shure. 3. You can, however, find longer male-female Lightning extension cords. They do work with the microphone's cord, so that's what I did. 4. Don't be tempted to try using the microphone's USB-B cord (also furnished for free) and adapting that to iOS Lightning with a USB extension cord. That won't work either thanks to Shure's unique port design. Once I solved the cord length problem, I soon noticed that Shure's cord was becoming looser at the microphone end (micro-USB), wouldn't stay securely plugged into the mike, and actually pulled out occasionally when the mike was being moved. Nothing abusive here, just routine activity, but not good during a recording session. So I just swallowed my pride, ponied up $30 (one third the cost of the mike!!), and ordered a (short 16 inch) replacement cord from Shure which I will probably tape to the microphone to make sure it stays in place. Poor construction, on top of poor interface design choices, is not what I've come to expect from Shure. Made the overall experience with this microphone a bit disappointing. ... show more
