  • It turns!
It's sturdy and an inexpensive introduction to turning something on a lathe. If you have a bench top drill press, the tool rest (tall black rod) may not have enough clearance to fit, especially with smaller pieces of stock. If the bar was broken down into two peices and threaded together, it would be perfect for my needs. The bolt that attaches the tool rest is a bit too long and a smaller washer was needed to attach it firmly to the base. It's usable with a "WEN" bench top drill press, though will require a different tool rest. ... show more

  • Limited function
I bought this to make some small wood spacers for an electric lamp project. It works OK. One important limit for me was the size of the drill press. Using the cheapest Harbor Freight model($50 on sale) I could only turn 5 1/2" blanks. Had to cut the tool rest down so that it didn't hit the upper housing on the drill press. Also had to put a spacer on the table surface so that the allen screw didn't protrude below the mount. Could have achieved the same thing by drilling a hole in the table surface. On a puny 1/2 HP drill press it is important to find the true center of the blank. I was trying to give a link for a center finding square. • Good quality product
The media could not be loaded. So far I LOVE it!!! I was kind of skeptical about it when I took it out of the shipping package, the box was open, and had a couple of grease marks on it, but everything seemed to be there as described. I set it up the very same day and was very impressed by how easy it was to assemble and mount it to my drill press!!! I have just a standard variable speed Ryobi drill press, and it’s the perfect size for what I need it for!!! Thanks Amazon!!! You ROCK!!! If I could give 10 stars I would!!! ... show more

  • Terrible, poorly designed product. With sketchy customer service to match.
I was excited to try this product out as an affordable solution to not owning a lathe. Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that I would be unable to use this item without a few modifications. Mounting bolts are unusable on a Grizzly style press so I had to use my own mounting hardware. I had it on hand so not a big deal. That being said, the allen screw used to attach the guide rail is about 1/4 inch too long requiring me to yet again dip into my own hardware. Still, after all of this, I managed to get the thing mounted securely and properly aligned. I measured and aligned a piece of wood from my scrap bin and secured it using the screw-in type spindle provided. As soon as I touched the wood with a tool, the threaded part of the spindle snapped off. There was a second upper spindle included that more closely resembled one you'd find on a standard lathe so I tried that. Unfortunately, no matter how securely I would attach this thing it would still allow free spin and tear out, eventually cutting out a circular groove around the center connection point causing it to lose the ability to grip the wood. I understand things happen from time to time and I could see how the idea of this product would work so I reached out to the company. At first, they seemed eager to help stating they would send me a replacement. A couple of days later I got another email asking for pictures, which I quickly provided, and again was assured I'd receive a replacement. Then, in few more days later I received yet another email asking for my order number which I promptly provided. Again the company told me that a replacement would be sent asap. I was starting to lose faith as I've seen this type of stall technique used by foreign sellers hoping to outlast the Amazon replacement window, happening more and more frequently. Sure enough, a few days later I awoke to yet another email requesting yet again another "we need this to process your refund" scavenger hunt. I obliged the company's request and informed them that communication time had come to an end. They could either replace the item or I'd process a return through Amazon. I waited until about 3 days before the return window closed but I never heard any else from the company. I sent the thing back to Amazon and bought a used lathe the next day (which took about 10 minutes to set up and start turning wood once I got it into my shop). I get the idea of this, I do. It seems like it could work and, if the product was well made, it might. Unfortunately, I'll never know. Do yourself a favor and just find a good, affordable second-hand lathe. You may have to spend a bit more money but you'll be saving yourself a lot of headache. ... show more

  • Economical answer to short term need.
This helped us turn 3 handles about 12 inches long, very decorative, out of maple, in a few hours time along with an economy lathe tool set and our drill press. This will not replace a lather for serious work BUT it will seriously get you out of a bind for short term or infrequent projects if you will have patience and sharp tools. The rest is unsupported at one end so it gets trick out there but go slow and watch your speeds and it is fine. We turned maple so it was tough stuff and chatter was still minimal as long as we kept sharp tools. ... show more
