  • Jury's still out.
Got it today and used it - to juice 3 pounds of marionberries (like boysenberries only 10x better). That's the only reason I bought this juicer, and I had sent back another brand just last week. This one did a good job, and juicing blackberries and raspberries isn't the easiest thing for a juicer to do, for some reason, and I spent a very long time looking, asking the question repeatedly, "Does this juice blackberries and raspberries?" and got almost no definitive answers, just "I don't know, it's good for celery." Which seems to be everybody's favorite juice. I do know that my old Omega centrifugal juicer can't do this job at all - it prefers carrots. So anyway, I got 6 cups of juice from those 3 pounds of marionberries, including a quarter-cup from running the seeds-pulp through again. It went very quickly, much faster than putting them thru a blender to get puree, and then hand-straining the puree thru a fine sieve to get the seeds out - which wastes a lot of juice and is a pain in the butt, literally - usually takes me a good 30-45 minutes that seems much longer. This went in about 15 minutes, no straining (again, literally), and I got about 25% more juice than doing it by blender and hand. I can see though that using a juicer for this has its downside - disassembling everything, washing it, trying to dry it, re-assembling. (Though I didn't have problems cleaning the metal strainer - just used the faucet sprayer, but then it was only blackberry seeds, not fibers of whatever.) The instructions were very minimal, couldn't even find out if the parts could go in the dishwasher, which would make things much easier. Just says wash with warm water and soap. Doesn't say NOT to use the dishwasher...odd thing to leave out of the instructions, though I think the box might say the dishwasher is OK. The clear plastic parts in particular look like the kind that could get etched badly. The disassembly, washing and reassembly almost seems more trouble than it's worth, especially with marionberry juice getting all over the counter and sink and everything I touch in the process. Cleanup from the blender-strainer routine is much faster and simpler and cleaner - though our kitchen does have marionberry stains in the most unexpected places, this juice stains like crazy. Very rich dark purple. Also (why are my reviews always so long? sorry for that...) I'm very aware that about 15% of the reviews of this are 1-star, which gives me pause, especially when people say things like "it worked for a day/week/month and then stopped" or it cracked and blew apart, or leaked all over everything. I chose Tribest because from what I've read it's one of the better juice manufacturers, but this is their cheapest model, entry-level I guess. I can't justify spending huge amounts of money just to juice marionberries, which aren't even available for at least half the year anyway. I just hope this thing lasts and keeps working - it seems to be very well made, solid, heavy, tight, so I hope that's actually true. I'll update in a few weeks or if it breaks down, whichever comes first. ... show more

  • It does make decent juice
Let's get right to the important stuff: this machine, if properly assembled, will make a decent cup of juice with an acceptable amount of waste. In around 5 minutes, including chopping time, I was able to turn 2 medium sized beets, 3 medium carrots, and two large apples into about 14 ounces of juice. The juice had about 1/2 teaspoon of soft pulp in it, which I actually kind of liked. The pulp that was discarded was quite dry. Feeding the small chunks of produce into the juicer was kind of fun. So, where did the juicer loose points? First of all, it just doesn't seem to be really well built. The way the motor slows down when I drop in a chunk of produce, the way the auger was absolutely NOT coming out after I finished juicing (had to remove screen at same time, not the order the instructions indicate), the way the auger was chipped and scratched when I took it out of the box, the flimsy plastic nature of everything but the base...I just don't have faith in this thing standing the test of time. Secondly, this thing is a BEAST to clean. There are so many nooks and crannies for pulp to get stuck in, and when you use the included brush, bits of wet, staining pulp go everywhere. It is not fun at all and takes quite a while. In all, this seems like a "first juicer" kind of deal. My advice: if you already know you love juicing, and you're sure you want to commit to it, skip right to buying one of the high-end expensive units. ... show more

  • Great small juicer, reasonable price, works very well, easy to use
The Shine juicer is a great small juicer for a reasonable price compared to most quality slow juicers. I really like that it's small and doesn't take up much space. It fits under my cabinets fully assembled - compare footprint to a horizontal juicer. See photos. Being a vertical juicer it's really easy to feed veggies and fruit into the chute because the auger pulls everything in. Rarely did I have to use the pusher that is provided. That being said, many things must be sliced quite small. I saw a couple youtube videos demonstrating how to best use this particular juicer which helped a lot. I've used it exstensively for over 2 weeks and didn't have any problems juicing a wide variety of foods. Everything juiced well, hard vegetables and soft fruits, various greens, beans, celery, carrots, cabbage- everything I put into it, but I also always used a variety foods, alternating hard and soft, for each juice. The pulp came out dry. The juice wasn't overly frothy or pulpy but I did strain it with a sieve. My one complaint is that I find it challenging to clean the screen filter. It takes a lot of work to get the tiny holes completely cleaned. I suspect it's the pulp from limes that I used with almost every juice I made. I even tried using a different kitchen brush, which helped, but it's still takes me a lot of time- maybe 5 minutes on the screen alone. I'm thinking that will likely get old and I won't use it everyday. I do recommend it, especially for a casual juicer or someone with more patience to clean it or maybe it cleans better in a dishwasher- which I don't have. The Shine juicer works very well and is a great price. ... show more

  • Lot of work for a glass of juice!
Was great with apples and carrots but the next day I tried celery and spinach And had to clean out the basket twice even though I cut the vegetables up small enough and followed all the directions. The hole that lets the pulp out of the sieve is very small so gets clogged up and the pulp backs up into the basket. I wanted some thing that I could make my juice fresh every morning but I couldn’t even imagine having to deal with this every day! Item was returned after three days of trying. ... show more
