  • AMAZING
It's THE Shimano MX30. The reputation/hype lives up. Solid, used it to convert my fixed gear to a single speed. I don't work with bikes often but it was a easy installation and function as you would expect as a fixed gear. Just make sure to get a tool to remove your old gear.

  • Awesome
Another great product from Shimano. Fits perfectly on my old school Redline bmx bike.

  • Get this one, not the other
This, the Shimano MX-30 is the one with 4 notches meant for use with a removal tool. The other similar one doesn't have the same notch pattern, rather some sort of thin notch that is apart of the threading. This one can actually be removed without destroying anything. It's the most silent freewheel I've used. I do have another louder one form a reputable brand, but I haven't found a specific use scenario that would make it better for me than the silence of this Shimano freewheel. ... show more

  • Great basic free wheel.
Great price for a basic freewheel. I had to exchange the original for a bit of grainy sound in the spin, but the second has been working perfectly for a few years now.

  • Go with the Shimano part
All freewheels of this type work, but this one can be used with both 1/8" and 3/32" chains. My single speed bike happened to have a 3/32" chain, which made many other brands unusable. Also, this freewheel looks and feels great.

  • Great freewheel for the price
Had to replace my 17T freewheel one my new SE blocks flyer. It was bad out of the box so I purchased this shimano freewheel to make my new bike even better! It’s super quiet and spins clean. Definitely happy with it. I’m sure I could have gotten better. But shimano is best known for their bearings and reels. So it was a no brainer with their bike products ... show more

  • Meh
I really want to my single speed to be "stealth" quite. So far that goal has eluded me, as when I pedal I get this hard to describe grinding/scratching noise, almost as if sand was in the drive train somewhere. I've tried just about everything, lubing the chain, lubing the freewheel (more on that in a bit), even replacing the chain with a 3/32 inch the better matches the teeth width of the default Shimano freewheel that came with my bike. Nothing worked, although lubing the freewheel helped a bit. That's what got me thinking that perhaps my freewheel was bad (I bought the bike used). So I picked up the same one but new (this one, MX30) from Amazon and installed it. Nope, same sandy noise when pedaling. Great (pretty quiet) when coasting mind you, which is why I gave it 3 stars vs. say 1 or 2 stars. Finally I bought a fixed gear cog (or whatever you call it) and flopped the wheel over. Hmmm. Much quieter, although not dead silent, meaning the freewheel was still only part of the problem; however I hate driving it in fixed gear as you can't coast (I know, I'm a pzzzzy) but I wanted to coast, so I finally broke down and bought the White Industries ENO Freewheel which has more paws (whatever that means) for better engagement. Anyway that made the bike ride much quieter (when not coasting, as when you coast the WI freewheel sounds like a buzz saw), but at least as quite as when I ran it fixed gear. Alas I still need to figure out what is present in my setup that is still causing noise, or sell the stupid bike and go belt driven... Pros: QUITE when coasting. Cons: Noisy when pedaling, like cheap parts inside or something ... show more
