Description

A complete course in machine-sewing for children aged 7+ years Sewing is a skill that has so many benefits for children and can give them real pride in their achievements. Angela Pressley has been teaching children to sew for 15 years, and knows how to encourage and inspire them to learn, starting with the basics and building up a portfolio of skills. And to keep them interested, she has designed 30 makes that will help them cement the knowledge they've gained, from sewing simple seams to patchwork, curves and corners, hems, linings, and so much more. The book starts with an introduction to the sewing machine and some of the basic skills and equipment needed to sew. Then there are four chapters, each beginning with a techniques section, followed by projects that put into practice the skills just learned. Every project includes clear artworks plus a difficulty rating, from "easy peasy" to "you're on your way", "you've got this", and "you're a star". As children progress through the levels they will learn how to make their own toys, bags, accessories, and clothes, and will be encouraged to put their own creative ideas into their sewing. • Was What I hoped for AND MORE !!!!
This was the 2nd book that I had ordered for my 8 year old granddaughter. The first book was a very big disappointment. This book has a full chapter dedicated to the needed tools to get started with. It described various steps that you need to do before you even start to sew on a project. Well written, photos were colorful and there were excellent drawings and patterns for the subjects and the projects. Hope it will create a love of sewing and especially quilting in the granddaughter. If so, she will be the 5th generation of ladies in my family to embrace the love of the art. Thank you to Angela Pressley for writing just wonderful book. ... show more

  • Fantastic! Just what I was looking for!
I wanted a sewing book to use with my 12-year-old granddaughter. I couldn't be more pleased with this book! It has various sewing levels: easy peasy; you're on your way; you've got this; and you're a star. The projects are very creative; the instructions are clear; and the illustrations are colorful. There are some pattern templates that are full-size, and others that you would have to photocopy at 200%. But for most of the projects, patterns are not even needed. I'll admit that neither my granddaughter nor I have had the time to actually get together to sew, but I know she would like this book. I may just give it to my daughter and have her use it. The book is very well done. ... show more

  • Really not meant for younger children
My 8 year old daughter struggled doing these sewing machine projects on her own. She needed my help every step of the way. The projects are too challenging for a younger child. The line of Sewing School books and the Sew with Me book by Brandy Nelson are better options for younger children to learn machine sewing. I think that this sewing book would be good for a child 12 and up or even an adult beginner though. ... show more

  • For Adults Too!
It’s hard to find the right kind of book for a beginner sewer who wants to get to know the sewing machine. You want the basics, without getting into the weeds. Diagrams, graphics and bright images help, and that’s exactly what Sewing Machine Basics for Children does. But it's not just for children. As an adult sewing novice, the book is a tremendous help. It's a wonderful size for spreading out on a worktop with instructions and steps clearly displayed on each page. The book hits just the right tone—both for children but also for adult beginners. The projects are accessible and fun. The book is organized in a way that makes sense and is manageable – with sections on getting started, learning the basics, finishing touches, and bags and purses. I also love the author’s warm and friendly tone, and feel like she’s sitting down next to me guiding the way. The book is an essential sewing machine tool for adults and children alike! ... show more
