Upon arrival, the blocks didn't look so hot - scratched and disorganized - due to a flimsy plastic case. But the damage wasn't bad, just a few scratches. The blocks look durable and I am sure they will hold up well in the long run with light sporadic usage. I've found them very helpful for quick marking of dimensions for cutting on my miter saw, no need to get a ruler or tape measure for marking cuts - where smaller dimensions are hard to mark out anyway. Just got a very sharp pencil and pick the right block!

First off, these are setup blocks, not gauge blocks. I measured mine with a known good caliper, and compared them to gauge blocks. Most setup bars in the set measured too small, only a few were bang on, none were too big. I know it's just for woodworking but I don't need a set with a bias, so returned them.

These setup blocks initially look like surprisingly bad quality for what should be a precise measuring tool, but after some testing they appear to be more accurate than they at first seemed. The first thing I realized when I opened the case is that half of the blocks had come loose and rolled around during shipping, despite the three layers of foam meant to keep them in place. As I sorted them, I noticed how badly damaged they were; nothing too obvious, but exactly the kind of damage you’d expect from putting several aluminum blocks in a small container and shaking it around. They’d been chipped and scratched and gouged and dented. They’re all in pretty rough shape, but not just from shipping. Some have burrs along their edges; sharp ridges left over from the casting process. Some are missing chunks of paint, and some are even slightly deformed. I wanted to know if they were still accurate enough to be used as intended, so I set about using my calipers to find out. Here’s what I found: The 1/16, 3/32, 7/32, 5/16, 1/4, 9/32, 23/32, 15/32, 1/2, and 3/4 blocks are all accurate to within +/- 0.001. This is the commonly accepted industry standard for consumer-grade setup blocks like these, and I’m a little surprised they did so well, considering the amount of defects and damage visible on each one. The others are more severe in their variations, but still within +/- 0.01. 1/8 = -0.007 5/32 = -0.004 3/16 = -0.004 7/16 = -0.006 3/8 = -0.008 Overall, these are surprisingly good, despite the amount of damage they suffered during shipping and the level of manufacturing defects present. Considering the price, I can’t help but recommend these. They may not look the greatest, but they’ll give you the results you’re after. 👍

Solid and accurate

This Gauge Set is a good value and all blocks are perfectly accurate. However, the case is pretty cheap. There is a foam core insert that holds the gauge blocks in place. If the blocks are completely inset into the foam, they are a challenge to remove, but don't clang around. The blocks were not fully inset into the foam when they arrived. Some of them were propped with the end sticking up out of the foam. Some remained partially inset into the foam and others were clanging around in the box out of their positions. I would think there would be something that could be done (cut outs or something) to be able to get quick and easy access to the blocks without having them able to shake around in the box. Additionally, the plastic box itself is rather flimsy as are the box latches. One of the slides moves super easily (too easily) and the other latch (fortunately) is pretty challenging to slide and unlock. It's this difficulty that is the only thing keeping the box from falling open and spilling the blocks. While the set itself is a good deal, I would not plan on being able to use the included box or long term storage.
