  • Good Grief!
Size: Guitar w/ Gig Bag & Pick Sampler Color: Right-Handed
I've been playing 12 strings since 1974, including a Westerly Guild F212XL, a Martin D-12-20, a couple Guild JF30-12s, and currently a Hartford-built Guild 512. So I know what a decent 12 string is supposed to sound like. I saw this on Amazon for $203 on Sunday, not sure why so low since it is usually $370 something. Given the excellent reviews, and the price, I couldn't resist. The electronics alone are currently $199 on Amazon, so I figure I just bought a new 12 string for $4. With case. I just arrived here at the office and I opened up the box. What looked like a mummified cat is the gig bag, which is decent and fits the guitar well enough. I tuned up the guitar, down a half step, which is my usual. The electronics have a built in tuner which works fine. Fit and finish is quite good, I see no obvious flaws. The finish -- poly I am sure -- is glossy and well applied. Solid spruce top, and the sides look like solid maple to me. The set up is pretty much fine, could maybe use a little flatter neck which I'll make a little flatter with a truss rod adjustment when I get home. It is quite playable. Neck is decent, all strings are buzz free. The finishing of the frets is impressive at any price. The strings seem a little heavier than my usual 10/47s. The 11th string measures 0.49. Sound is relatively bright, which is normal for a maple 12. Intonation is excellent. I've had some nice maple 12 strings in the past. When strummed hard, they don't have the "roar" of a mahogany guitar. Same thing here. And the bass does not have the thump of a rosewood model. The bass is a little light despite it being a "jumbo," but that is something I've heard in much more expensive maple 12 strings. Plugged in you can add a little bass to your sound with no problem whatsoever. Pickup sounds very good. This guitar requires no apologies despite the price, even if it is $347 when you buy it. Excellent intonation and playability. Nice 12 string shimmer. Good looking and nice sounding guitar. Even at $374 I'd say it is a real bargain. UPDATE: I've been playing this guitar for 18 months. It still sounds very, very good and is holding up fine. Not sure why Amazon only has the lefty version at the moment. ... show more

  • Good lefty 12-string
Size: Guitar w/ Hard Case & Accessories Color: Left-Handed
As leftys know, it can be tough to find a playable instrument. Stores don't stock them so it's not easy to try them out. This Sawtooth 12-string lefty acoustic guitar is great. The tuner is great. The electric pickup is great. It is a brassy sounding guitar, and it is not overly loud. The amplified sound is far less brassy, and if you play amplified just enough to equal the level of the guitar's acoustic output they are just great together. I am playing the original strings and string choice may be a factor in the brassiness - which isn't bad, it is just the timbre of the particular instrument. I play it through a Fishman Aura, with many settings to choose from that work well. The neck is fat as one would expect of a 12-string. Craftmanship appears 100%. Sawtooth uses gun patches in it, similar in that way to my Martin. There is a lot of great inlay in relatively inexpensive guitars out there, and this Sawtooth has great inlay work on the fretboard, though I do find it a bit large and loud. For some players that might be great, but I've mostly figured out where the frets are already so the big inlays are a bit flashier than I would prefer. On the other hand, it is a beautiful guitar but looks aren't that important to me. At a distance the fretboard inlay looks almost as stickers but they're really great inlay work. The sustain of this guitar is rather amazing and it carries through the pickup to the amplified sound. The case is lightweight, but adequate to the instrument. The case has binding clips on both sides. The pick guard has a plastic film on it, peel that off. The tuning machines are just great, as good as the grover mini's I put on my other 12-string. They turn uniformly and without binding or dead spots. The intonation is amazing - as a lefty, I have found that several guitars I've bought over the years, play an F chord out of tune with the other chords which for me means something wrong with the string lengths - with its compensated saddle this guitar plays a perfect F. It stays in tune as well which is pretty awesome for a 12-string because it's so much work to deal with 12 string tuning. The tuner is fast and very easy to see and understand. Have to appreciate that, some built-in tuners are ridiculous junk. The guitar came well packaged. Yep it's a winner. As with any guitar you will want to invest in a good humidifier to have with it in its case and check on it regularly, don't leave the instrument out in the open if your home or castle experiences varying humidity. I've lost 3 guitars due to that negligence, so learn from my mistakes and invest in a good humidifier, if you skimp on that then down the road you're gonna lose some guitars that you wrote precious songs on. Happy playing! ... show more

  • Beautiful and great value.
Size: Guitar w/ Gig Bag & Pick Sampler Color: Right-Handed
I've been playing six strings for over 60 years and decided to try a 12 string. My problem was to buy a quality 12 stringer that doesn't cost an arm & a leg. Most our are out of my price range. I order one for around $200 and when I received it I immediately return it because the quality was not there. Than I decided to try one a little more expensive but didn't brake the bank. When I received my Sawtooth I just couldn't believe my eyes. It was beautiful & also had great quality for the money. I've only had it for a couple weeks & I can't put it down. My only wish is that I would have bought a12 string sooner. Yes I love my Sawtooth and the only way you would get it from me is to pry it from my dead hands. I think this means that I would recommend this guitar to anyone who loves playing guitars! ... show more

  • Plays Great....not Awesome
Size: Guitar w/ Hard Case & Accessories Color: Left-Handed
I would have been nice that I received the guitar stand as advertised, however I did not. Therefore I am not pleased..I had three deliveries from each of the big three. The big two did great. USPS put a note in my mailbox " too big for box" wake up call....they (USPS) messed up a delivery the next day too.....stop using them (USPS) OR FACETHE CONSEQUENCES of losing clients. Guitar play nice ...considering the price and all (USPS). Dang I just knocked over the guitar.....sure could have used that guitar stand you PROMISED. ... show more
