I collected comics as a kid. Stopped around 1987 and started again in the early 90s when Image was starting out. A few years later, life obligations outweighed my purchasing power so I stopped collecting. I recently started back up again. I was pleased that Savage Dragon was still going strong and wanted to get back into the world that Erik Larsen created. (I loved his work on Spider-man and remembered the first few issues of Savage Dragon fondly.) First volume was as much fun as I remembered.     • Blew away my expectations.
One of the cartoons I grew up on was Savage Dragon and I always liked the idea of a mutant policeman, but reading this comic I think it's more that Officer Dragon's positive attitude and unwavering sense of duty that makes this story great. The comic strip is fairly dark but filled with intrigue and action. The author (who has drawn Savage Dragon for its ENTIRE RUN) apparently created the character in high school and this book is an adaptation of some of the stories he used to write back then. I'd give the actual artwork a 7.5 out of 10--it's got good composition and stuff, but it's not the best, and the inking definitely could have been better, but it doesn't take away from the story at all. Anyway, I freaking love this book. The day it came in the mail I opened it up just to flip through it a little and wound up reading the entire thing in one sitting. I grew up reading Savage Dragon, but due to time and moving I lost all my original issues. Was going to go buy them on eBay until I saw this compendium of the first several issues. I was EXCITED! Finally got my hands on the savage dragon again! Then when I found out about the next volume being released, pre-ordered it without hesitation. Savage Dragon is what you get when you throw police cop dramas and superheroes into a blender and it's one heck of a mix. I absolutely devoured this beautiful hardcover collection from start to finish and greatly anticipate Volume 2

    • Glad I lived to see this!!!
I was 9 when I got the first issue of Savage Dragon at a local grocery store. Never before had I been so floored by a comic book. This has glossy paper, bright colors, and loads of action. I was hooked, until my dad saw it wasn’t comic code approved and swiped my copy. Eventually, I got the clamshell edition of the first three issues of the miniseries and collected the series for another few years. All this to say that this series is a labor of love and dedication on the part of Erik Larsen and it shows in a big, bad way. Larsen wasn’t the most vocal or stage-hungry as the other Image rebels. But he was the one who put a book out on time. And still does. He was the one whose book didn’t get cancelled, restarted, cancelled again, repeat. Larsen loves what he does, he loves his world and his characters, and that loves transfers to his audience. This is the beginning of that labor of love. It is well worth the money and the read, because you can feel the love that went into it. The book is well constructed on high quality paper. There are loads of extras and insight inside this monumental work. It’s about time Savage Dragon gets a high quality edition, in color. My only gripe is that I’m finished with it and need the next volume, please and thank you. Fortunately, I know it’s being overseen by someone who ensures his work is published right and on time. Savage Dragon to me is one of the best examples of "Pure Comics" as It’s rare these days to come across one that effortlessly gives off the impression that the creator is having a blast making things up as they go along, and Erik Larsen does just that. Coming from someone who never read these growing up I felt like getting this and was not disappointed included a TON of extras and looking forward to a lot more volumes to come. love that the cover is printed on the book under the slip cover. high quality hard cover with like half an inch of bonus material in the back. this series has influenced so many writers and artists today. i hope they print more
