After over two decades of owning and using a large, tower speaker-based 5.1 surround sound system as my primary home theater setup, I’ve replaced all that imposing gear with this Samsung Q990F soundbar system. The “old” 5.1 system consisted of Paradigm Studio 100 v.4 tower speakers, a matching Paradigm Studio CC690 center channel (HUGE center channel), Paradigm surrounds, and an SVS 12” sealed subwoofer, a few years newer than the Paradigm system. That system was simply fantastic for movies, concert Blu-rays, and two-channel music. However, a key difference between my Paradigm system and the Q990F lies in two-channel sound staging and imaging. The Paradigm system excelled in this regard when properly set up in the room, projecting a large, deep, and detailed soundstage that the Q990F simply cannot match. This is to be expected, given the different objectives of the respective speaker designs and types, as well as the overall size of the speakers. The two separate towers separated by about 9 feet between them provided enough space to recreate a convincing soundstage. A one-panel speaker of any type simply won’t keep up in that regard due to physics. All that said, the Q990F does sound good with music, but it’s not “great” compared to my Paradigm system, especially in the areas mentioned above. Now, let’s talk about movies in TrueHD and Atmos… WOW! I’m impressed! It’s loud, clear, thumpy but not lumpy, slow or tubby, and in this arena, I didn’t miss my Paradigm system at all. For such a small subwoofer, there’s a very good amount of LFE thunder. While it doesn’t punch as hard and isn’t quite as nimble as the SVS 12” sub it replaced, I’m surprised as to how good it is. For its compact size, the Q990F delivers a punchy and immersive audio experience that truly enhances the theater atmosphere. However, as with any audio system, proper placement in the room is crucial. Since I’ve already optimized the placement of my speakers during the installation of the Paradigm system, I knew the ideal spot for the subwoofer in my theater room. This setup undoubtedly allows the Q990F to deliver its best performance, and it does. Installing the Q990F yesterday was a breeze. The setup and installation process were straightforward and hassle-free. While you’ll need to download the SmartThings app and add the Q990F to it, this step was a breeze, and there were no issues. My experience was truly “plug and play.” I simply placed the components in their designated locations, connected everything, downloaded the SmartThings app, added the Q990F, the speakers, and the subwoofer to the soundbar through the app, and I was up and running in a relatively short amount of time. Thankfully, I didn’t encounter any issues, and everything has been working flawlessly so far. On a side note, I’m growing increasingly tired of constantly signing up for apps and websites to use products I’ve handed my money over for. I’ve bought and paid for these products, and I simply want to use them without being forced to sign up for additional apps or devices that I don’t need or want. I don’t use Google products and don’t have any other SmartThings devices and would rather have a dedicated Samsung/Q990F app to utilize all this speakers functions and features. After setting up the Q990F and making a few minor adjustments to the settings to optimize the sound for my room, I played some test movie clips to enjoy the audio experience. I began by watching a Mission Impossible clip from “Ghost Protocol” in TrueHD (not ATMOS) on Netflix. The desert sandstorm scene was particularly impressive. The sound was great and not far off from what I vaguely remember the experience being like on my much larger Paradigm system. The room filling sound with grains of sand sounds swirled around the room. While it wasn’t a 360 sound bubble since it wasn’t ATMOS, the sound did move around the room well and to the sides of me. I was impressed and probably the biggest compliment I can give the Q990F is that I just wanted to keep watching the movie because it sounded so good. Next, I tried a couple of scenes from ‘Transformers Rise Of the Beasts’ in ATMOS via Netflix. Again, I was impressed with the overall size of the sound, but for some reason, it wasn’t as immersive as I had expected. It wasn’t even as immersive as the TrueHD sound from M.I. Ghost Protocol. Am I expecting too much from ATMOS? I adjusted some of the speaker levels in the SmartThings app, which helped a small degree, but I’m still not getting satisfying height effects like I thought I would. I’ll make further adjustments to see if I can boost the top firing speakers to assist in getting better height effects from ATMOS soundtracks. Even so, the movie did sound good, especially Optimus Prime and other bassy-voiced Transformers voices. They never became unintelligible and were always clear and easy to hear. I listened between the 30-55 volume settings, and 55 was good and loud in my room. Loud in a good way, like in a theater. Enjoyable. I also noticed that the contrast between the loud and quiet sections of the movies was very well handled. The quiet scenes were appropriately hushed but still had atmosphere and clarity, while the loud scenes contained appropriately sized and clear bombast. The remote control is clean and user-friendly. I use a Logitech Harmony Elite Universal Remote to control my devices, which helps me reduce the number of clickers I need to watch movies, YouTube videos, or other content. Once I set up the Harmony remote to control the Q990F, it functions perfectly. Although Harmony doesn’t currently have the Q990F in its database, it did have the previous model, Q990D, so I used that profile during set up, and it works. I haven’t encountered any compatibility issues either. I only have a TV (a 65-inch Panasonic Plasma via ARC, not eARC), an Apple TV 4K gen 4, and an Oppo BDP-95 Blu-ray player connected. Everything works as expected without any hiccups so far. It’s only been one day. I followed up the above-mentioned movie clips with some James Bond Blu-ray action, particularly the helicopter scene near the end of Skyfall. HOLY WOW! Yes! Prepare for IMPACT! I’m surprised my house is still standing. Bullets whizzing around my theater room, helicopter blades whooping about, CRASH! BANG! BOOM! with clarity, no less! The sound didn’t become a jumbled mess of noise, which can happen with smaller, less capable soundbars. What a ride! Well done, Samsung. I understand that there might be soundbars that offer slightly better performance in specific areas compared to this bar. However, it would require listening to them side by side to notice any significant differences. Even if there were a superior overall soundbar, it might be more expensive or excel in only a few areas, while the Q990F may excel in others. I acquired this soundbar at a great discount because the outer box had been damaged during handling. Fortunately, there was no damage to the internal hardware or the inner protective foam. Considering the price I paid, I can’t imagine any other soundbar at that cost coming close. Perhaps at twice the cost or more. Perhaps. I also considered the Sennheiser Ambeo Max and Plus, but I was hesitant due to the lack of rear surrounds and, to a certain extent, the price, even though they were on sale at the time. I visited Best Buy and listened to the Sonos Arc Ultra, but I wasn’t impressed. It sounded ordinary. Perhaps it was the setup or the way it was placed, but I wasn’t satisfied. I know that the Sonos Arc Ultra bar receives great reviews, especially when combined with Sonos Era 300s as surrounds and the Sonos Sub. However, this setup would significantly increase the overall price, potentially reaching or exceeding $2000.00. Considering the price I paid for the Q990F, I would have only gotten the Arc Ultra and would have had to spend extra for the surrounds and the sub. I’m confident that properly set up, the Arc Ultra is a great system, but I’ll never know for sure. For now, I’m quite satisfied with the Q990F. Considering its overall performance in my room so far, I believe it’s a good value for the money. I do wish Samsung would allow the addition of a second, or even up to four total subs to be connected to enhance the overall amount and linearity of the bass, however. Maybe down the line with a firmware update. I’m sure getting both subs to place nice together wirelessly wouldn’t be easy. Or maybe it would. Who knows? Speaking of firmware updates, of course there was one available for the Q990F once I got the SmartThings app up and running. I clicked “download and install” or whatever it actually said, the update process began and there were no problems during, nor after the update completed. I know there was a disastrous update issue in the past with a previous Q990 iteration that bricked some sound bars out there but I had no issues at all. So, I think the Q990F is definitely worth the current $1499 or so price and if you can get it even cheaper, all the better.

The soundbar works great once installed and hooked up. In that regard, here's a few learned lessons 1) The remote is mostly useless especially since the scrolling display on the soundbar is small, hard to view, and limited in what it displays. Download the Samsung Smart app as that provides more controls that are more descriptive, easier to read and adjust. 2) The instructions in the included Quick Startup manual and the more detailed PDF manual download for bluetooth connection using the remote are hard to make work. Spent quite some time trying to follow the instructions from the downloaded PDF Bluetooth Pair button on the remote puts soundbar into the Bluetooth pairing mode. When you press the button, “BT PAIRING” will appear on the display and you can connect a new Bluetooth device. Then directs reader to page 9 with some more instructions on the id set buttons on the remote speakers, and using the up/down/left/right buttons on the remote. All in all very non intuitive process and instructions. WHAT DOES WORK IS THE APP, in the app there is a bluetooth connection button to the upper right (round button), press it and the instructions for steps to follow are easy. All in all I've tossed the remote to the side and just use the app in my iPad. So much better! 2) Connecting a turntable. The Q990F does not have a headphone jack for direct audio input (I believe earlier models did). So I took the turntable RCA cables (and ground) and connected them to a preamp (I recommend the Pyle Mini Phono Turntable Preamp on Amazon, small, decent performance) then a pair of these (RCA Male to Male Adapter 2Pack, Gold Plated Dual RCA Coupler Connector for Audio Video Extension Brand: Togconn on Amazon) for a short connection to to a VPFET Analog to Digital Audio Converter RCA to Optical with Cable 3.5mm AUX Jack Toslink and Coaxial Adapter for Soundbar also from Amazon) and plug its optical output into the optical input of the soundbar. Works fine, good sound quality and AFFORDABLE :-) 3) The soundbar has only 3 HDMI sockets, The HDMI to TV, an HDMI 1 and an HDMI 2 . Well, HDMI 1 goes to my cable box, so my Samsung blue ray DVD, Apple TV, and a Toshiba DVD/VCR can't all fit into HDMI 2 at the same time. I needed a HDMI switcher -- 3 HDMI inputs to 1 HDMI output with a remote with the LEAST NUMBER OF BUTTONS ON IT. This one fits my need. OREI HDMI Switcher with 4K@120Hz 4:4:4 / 8K@60Hz 4:2:0 - HDR10+, VRR, ALLM, QFT - 48Gbps Bandwidth - HDMI Switch with Remote also on Amazon. Works fine and dare I say, affordable :-) All in all after investing a long afternoon, identifying the other "items" I needed to put it all together and adding them as they came in from Amazon, I am quite happy with the soundbar and its performance and give it a 5 star rating :-D

Within the first movie, I was hearing background sounds like people clapping, quiet conversations, and little details that I had never noticed before. I bought this because I wanted something that would actually make movie nights feel different, not just making everything louder. I have had it for about a week now, and it has completely changed the experience of movies and TV. Setup was easy. The soundbar, subwoofer, and rear speakers paired quickly, and I spent more time deciding where I wanted to put everything than I did setting it up. I am using it with a Samsung TV, so Q-Symphony was easy to enable and creates a really full, immersive sound. It automatically turns on when my TV does. Everything has stayed connected without any issues over the past week, which was something I was a little concerned about with wireless rear speakers. The soundbar itself is fairly large, but the larger size helps deliver such a wide soundstage. It makes everything feel more realistic, and I have found myself noticing details I never heard through my TV speakers. The bass is also impressive and has enough power to rattle one of my walls during action scenes. Even with that much bass, voices stay clear, so I am not trying to turn the volume up for conversations and back down during loud scenes. I also like that you can adjust the bass, rear speakers, and overall sound to match your room and personal preference instead of being stuck with one sound profile. I recommend taking a few extra minutes to position the rear speakers because it really helps create the surround sound effect. The system also gets much louder than I would ever realistically need without sounding distorted, but it still sounds great at lower volumes for late-night watching. I have been really impressed. It is definitely an investment, but considering the sound quality, wireless connectivity, customization, and overall experience, I think it offers good value if you are looking for a premium home theater system.

Initially ordered the 900F for $597 but then the 990F came on sale for $900 and I jumped on the deal. Best decision I made in a long time. Absolutely amazing sound quality. As good as my hifi stereo systems back in the day. The bass is awesome. Playing my YouTube playlist and you can feel the bass in your chest. The highs are top notch. I never imagined that it would perform as well as it did. I should also note that I bought it for my Samsung 65 OLED and the setup was simple and done in a matter of minutes. If you have a Samsung the compatibility is seamless. The bar is fairly big and heavy but it has a streamlined look and I actually placed it behind my tv on a dresser. The woofer is small but powerful. I’d recommend getting speaker stands for the 2 speakers. Make the purchase you won’t regret it.

The Q990F package arrived without any shipping damage. My only minor complaint is the shipping time it took to be delivered. But all in all I am pleased with the purchase. The system is easy to set up and so far is working perfectly.

So, this HW-Q990F is upgrading my Samsung 5.1.4 Atmos soundbar (HW-K950) from several years ago. After having a senior moment and not realizing the plug fell out of the sub-woofer, I can honestly say this is a solid 4-4.5 stars. It only took me 3 days to realize the subwoofer had no power :( This soundbar puts pressure on my custom-built Yamaha RX-A3060 7.2.4 in my family room. Pros: 1. Dolby Atmos 11.1.4. 2. Much better connectivity with speakers. 3. Awesome upgrade to subwoofer, smaller and louder. Side speakers also seem more compact with better sound. 4. AI settings really do work well for both spatial sound and voice 5. Q-Symphony is awesome, as long as you have a Samsung TV that supports it. 6. Works with Harmony Remotes. 7. Alexa integration Cons: 1. Price - this is very pricey and that was before the new tariffs. 2. Does not up mix. 3. Small LED Display that is difficult to see. 4. Limited notification that it is in Atmos mode. 5. Cheap materials - particular on the top grill. 6. No notification that a speaker is not connected. 7. Does not support WiFi 6 or 7 - network setup can be a pain. 8. Alexa integration. Review: This turned out to be an excellent upgrade to my older HW-K950 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos Soundbar. It sounds much better with incredible bass, sound balancing and voice amplification. The bar itself is about the same dimensions and the K950, maybe slightly longer with the angled curves. The construction is fine, the mesh front returns. The LED display is a problem. It's not very large and is difficult to read behind the mesh. The K950 had the same problem. The top grill feels cheap as it is now plastic. The real problem with the display is there is no longer and LED that lights up in blue when you are listening to an Atmos stream. The display does flash that it is decoding Atmos, but it is quick and goes away. You really don't have a visual confirmation that you are in an Atmos stream. Really, for the cost for this unit, couldn't they put a cheap led on the corner like the K950? All the connections remain the same. 1 HDMI-eARC, 2 HDMI, and 1 optical input. Note, if you use the optical input, you loose all the AI features, and it might drop the Atmos support. I'm not sure, I don't use optical. If you intend to use Q-Symphony, you will need to run your inputs to your TV and make sure the HDMI-eARC is connected to the HDMI-eARC port on your TV. Otherwise, it will not work. This means that you will have more cables to hide going up to your TV. The wireless speakers are a huge improvement over the K950. The subwoofer is definitely smaller and now has two opposing speakers. The side speakers can now be placed in 3 configurations, 1 rear, and 2 front configurations. I use the rear. The sound from the speakers are clear with little distortion. They seem to connect more consistently and don't tend to drop out like the K950 could do at random times. The subwoofer itself is incredible. This thing really cranks out the bass. And, it does so without a lot of distortion from shaking windows and walls. You can really feel the bass, but, unless you have it really cranked up is not going to shake your walls and windows. It is smaller. Q-Symphony is a great feature. I wish more sound systems would utilize this. Granted, speakers in TV suck. But if implemented right, they can add additional speakers to the mix, expanding the sound field and enhancing it. I have been running this enabled, and I'm not sure what fields the tv speakers are contributing to, but I can tell a difference when I disable it. AI features - There are 2 AI Settings available. The first is SpaceFit. It will continuously monitor the sound and adjust the speakers to work with the content you are viewing with the room and the way you have your speakers set up. Active Voice Amplifier is the other. It detects what you are listening to and works to bring out the voice and distinctive sounds. I haven't really played around with Spacefit, I have it enabled, but haven't really played with it much. Active voice is easier to discuss. Even in the most bass heavy scenes, voices are clear and easy to hear. However, it also brings out a lot of the higher frequencies which can be problematic. More on that later. There are several ways to connect sources to the bar, HDMI, HDMI-eARC, Optical, WiFi, and Bluetooth. If you have a Samsung Galaxy you can tap your phone to pair it to the speaker. But sadly, it doesn't work with any other phone. It's still pretty easy to connect via Bluetooth. The Q990F also has several sound options, like the K950. You can use Game Mode, which I haven't tried yet. There is Surround Sound like the K950. There is a new adaptive surround mode that I use. It is definitely better then surround mode. My first disappointment with this soundbar over the K950 is it does not seem to up mix to Dolby Atmos or even 11.1.4, like my older K950 did. My K950 did up mix sound to 5.1.2, if not 5.1.4. It didn't matter if I dropped Q-Symphony and connected the source directly to the sound bar or kept Q-Symphony with the source connected to the TV. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the soundbar, or the new Roku box I bought to go with it. I miss the up mixing when viewing xFinity stream. Setup - it's actually pretty easy if all your devices are on 2.4ghz wireless. SamsungThings is much better these days, and will detect all your devices as long as they are all on the same 2.4ghz SSID. However, if you have a high-end router that broadcasts 1 SSID and automatically connects to the correct frequency, you will have an issue. You have to disable this feature on your router, and then manually connect your phone (Tablet or Laptop), TV, and soundbar to the 2.4ghz SSID. You will then be able to set everything up. Once setup is completed, you can change your router back, and everything will work fine. I can report that I was able to configure the Q990F with my aging Harmony remote. Thank you Logitech for keeping the servers open and updated. Speaking of remotes, I can now control the sound from my Roku remote; which, I couldn't do on the K950. Supper sweet! The timer on my Harmony works flawlessly as expected. I was excited to see that the Q990F supported Alexa. I would love to stream my playlist to the soundbar without having to do so from my phone. However, I haven't been able to get Alexa to work at all. The Smartthings Ap always hangs, either it won't let you link your account, or it will freeze in the pairing process. I spent over an hour to try to get it to work and gave up. Even if I got it to work, I doubt it would do anything more the turning the bar on or off, adjusting the volume, etc. It's not an Alexa device at all. The sound field is incredible. Upgrading from a 5.1.4 to and 11.1.4 system is simply incredible. It was a huge upgrade! Dolby Atmos makes it a true cinematic experience. Real World Experience: I choose to test this unit with Dennis Villeneuve's Dune Part 1. I chose this movie because it was 4K and Dolby Atmos from my blue ray player. I focused on 3 scenes. The first scene that I wanted to view was Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam testing Paul. This scene features a couple of sounds that I was excited to see how it would sound on this soundbar as compared to what I remembered from the iMax experience. As Paul walks into the room there is a sound, as if it's Mohiam's other memory coming through. It's full of bass and echos. And it truly sounded ethereal. Just as I remembered in my iMax experience and how it was described in the book. It's followed by Mohiam using the voice on Paul, which is heavy on bass. You could still clearly hear the command in a way that echos in your head. Just like I always thought how the voice worked in the book. I almost felt as though I was compelled to move forward, just like Paul was in the scene. Despite the heavy bass, and echo sounds, the voices were still clear and easy to hear. The second scene that I focused on was Paul's arrival on Arrakis. The transport has landed on the planet, and he, his parents, and court are lined up ready to walk out into the oppressive heat. Right before they depart the transport, bagpipes start playing. This was where I thought the bar was over-compensating. The bagpipes are high frequency. I had enabled the Adaptive Voice Amplifier. There is little dialog in this scene. I found that the bagpipes were actually slightly painful to hear, which tells me it's really trying to bring out the higher notes and amplify them. However, as they walk out and pass by the gathered Freemen, you could clearly hear them calling out Lisam Al Giab - very clearly. Honestly, I had the same opinion when I viewed this on iMax, so perhaps it's more of a flaw of the scene and not the soundbar itself. The third scene that I focused on was Paul and Lady Jesica on the Thopter after their arrival on Arrakis when they are transported to the house. I really wanted to hear the mechanical movements of the thopter, which is heavy on bass and the conversation that they had. The movements of the Thopter were just what I was expecting, it was heavy in bass and yet you could clearly hear the hushed conversation between Paul and Jessica. This supports my experience with non-Atmos content with heavy bass. The bass is what you want but you can still hear the vocals, which previous soundbars struggled with. In the past, you could get the heavy bass and lose the conversation or get the conversation and lose the bass. This soundbar really adds the bass, the depth and atmosphere and you don't lose the conversation in it. I did listen to some of my eclectic playlist on the soundbar and it sounded incredible. However, the bar doesn't seem to up mix content. When listening to 5.1 or lower it does sound good, but not nearly as good as Atmos. As I said I really notice it when streaming xFinity over my Roku. I really do miss the up mixing the K950. The Q990F still sounds great but I feel it could be better. In theory the bar should be able to upmix. Perhaps this can be fixed with a firmware update in the future? Hello Samsung, please answer this.... Summary: This is the flagship soundbar from Samsung with flagship pricing. It is incredible with advanced AI features and Samsung integration. All the features and performance justify the high price tag for this flagship item. The sound is incredible but could be better. Particularly on 5.1 and lower sources. It delivers on every front especially with its AI features. But this is very expensive and it's the little things that add up to a -.5 to -1 star. Choices Samsung made, such as removing the Atmos LED, cheap material on the top grill, broken and limited Alexa support, it's perplexing lack of touch to pair for non-Samsung phones (particularly since their phones use android), lack of notification of connection issues, the small (barely readable) LED display, and requiring an account to use SmartThings app justifies a -.5 star rating. Since we can't do half ratings, I have to deduct a full point. If you don't have a soundbar or surround system, I highly recommend the HW-Q990F regardless if you have a recent model of a Samsung TV or not. If you have a soundbar or sound system that is 5.1.2 or lower, I'd also highly recommend this soundbar. If you have an Atmos 5.1.4 or 7.1.4 soundbar or system, I'd recommend this, but caution you to think about the cost vs value vs performance for your application. Especially now that new tariffs are in effect. The HW-Q990F puts pressure on my home theater system but could not replace it - even though my Yamaha setup is 7.2.4. There is nothing that can replace separately positioned speakers and 2 sub-woofers. But it is a close contender. This soundbar is perfect for smaller rooms, like my bedroom I have it installed in. Value wise, I could not build a system with a dedicated receiver, 2 subs, and all the speakers. The wireless speakers are a god send, no wires crisscrossing your room.

Just bought the Sonos arc ultimate with the sub for three days ago and played music and some movies through it. Right off the bat I was not impressed with the max volume especially for music. It did sound good in the base is very robust. But if you really wanna jam some loud music just didn’t do it for me. My 12-year-old Klipsch SB 2 went louder and was only $700 back in the day! Decided to order the Samsung Q990F from Amazon had it delivered in one day. It was delivered this morning have tweaked all the settings got everything set up, surrounds on speaker stands, etc. Have played music through it movies, watch some football. Let me just say this thing is absolutely amazing! The base sounds very good and deep. Not quite as powerful as the Sonos, but not far behind. Went to Netflix to try out the sound of a movie and played a movie called extraction 2. Wow sounded like I was in a movie theater sitting in my living room. Streamed some music from YouTube music and it gets so loud it will run you out of the room. That’s coming from a bass player that has played in a live rock band before. Totally happy with things so far. System looks good, sounds good, set up was a breeze. That’s the one thing I was worried about and it was easier than I could have imagined. Just download it that app that you need for Samsung products on my iPhone and the rest is history. Now back to the store with the big yellow tag in their company name to return the Sonos. Funny thing is, this thing sounds a lot better to me and was cheaper. The Sonos, I had to buy the sub extra and I was already at the price of this entire Samsung system. Was looking at having to spend close to $1000 more for surround speakers.
