  • Incredible Soundbar, Truly Cinema-Quality Audio at Home!
The SAMSUNG Q990D has completely transformed my home entertainment setup. The sound quality is phenomenal, rich, immersive, and crystal clear. The 11.1.4 channel system delivers deep, powerful bass and incredibly detailed surround sound that makes movies, music, and games feel like a full theater experience. FYI: I turned off automatic updates on my Samsung Smart Things App. The Q990D is perfect out of the box, the past firmware was flawed. If you update you use a usb thumb drive and you’ll have no problems! Setup was surprisingly easy, and the wireless connections work flawlessly. The rear speakers and subwoofer sync perfectly without any lag or drop outs. I also love how well it integrates with my Samsung TV; the Q-Symphony feature really enhances the audio even more. The dialogue clarity is exceptional, Dolby Atmos performance is impressive, and the overall build quality feels premium. Whether I’m watching action movies or just streaming music, the audio fills the room beautifully. If you’re looking for a top-tier soundbar system that’s worth every penny, the Q990D is a winner. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • Just Buy It
I’ve had this sound bar for a little over 1.5 years and have been very impressed. These days, audio mixes on your shows/movies are not optimized for the wimpy built in speakers in modern flat panel TVs, so I found myself reading subtitles more often than not. You really start missing out on the small cinematic details when you’re so focused on figuring out what the actor has to say. It takes the joy out of watching TV. Look, my wife is never going to let me get a true 7.1 setup strewn around the living room, and running cables through the walls to cut out in wall speaker holes is out of the question. You’ll be hard pressed to find any sound bar better than this especially when you can get it for less than $1000. The only real competition is the Sonos Arc Ultra and Sony Quad, but you have to buy the subs separately for those. The Nakamichi Dragon is also not living room approved per the wife. The sound bar looks sleek on top of my media console with the 65” TV mounted on the wall above it, and the subwoofer and satellite speakers are easy to tuck into a corner or set on some end tables/lamp stands to give you that immersion you need. If you want something slimmer and have the ultimate aesthetic that will still vastly improve the dialogue and sound quality, I recommend the Samsung HW S800D ultra slim sound bar. Set up is a breeze with the HDMI eARC port on your TV highly recommended. Using the Samsung app makes changing settings easier since the display on the sound bar is Spartan. I like the surround or adaptive presets with SpaceFit Sound on. You’ll probably need to tinker with the sound delay setting in your TV for the AV/lip sync. I found 120 ms delay to be perfect for my QN95B Samsung TV. You can also adjust it in the sound bar settings but only at 25 ms intervals while my TV can fine tune a little better at 10 ms intervals. Don’t waste your time researching anymore. If you’re reading this, just buy it. $900 is a steal. ... show more

  • Practically Perfect
Please read this review as 4.5 stars. This unit gets high marks from most professional reviewers, and rightly so. Due to advancing age and the realization that I won't be hefting 40lb receivers and 80lb speakers much longer, I decided to start downsizing - and this was the first thing I did. Glad too. It is as good as advertised with only minor criticisms. Out-of-box it is powerful loud, seemingly louder using eArc than the HDMI inputs. (I recommend a break-in period for the speakers before too critical a listen). The center channel seems a bit dominant, L/R mains a bit weak, and low bass prominent with weaker mid-bass. The claimed pass-through capability is only if the soundbar is turned on - it will not pass audio/video if it is off, so if you are planning to use the unit as a hub, just be aware that it is NOT passive pass-through. There are four sound modes but EQ is only available on "Standard"which is unfortunate as it could be positively applied otherwise. I would like to recommend that the next iteration have EQ available in all modes and each speaker individually addressable as well. Right now only Bass/Treble sliders are available for the advanced sound modes (Surround, Adaptive). One critique is that ATMOS is a bit weak, not that it matters much since ATMOS material is not always mentioned in the program descriptions of the various streaming sites when selecting a viewing choice. Fandango does a good job of identifying ATMOS coded offerings but not the other streamers. Amazon Prime Video only offers ATMOS if you pay the extra fee for no commercials, but even then the audio description is missing (I subscribed to no commercials for two days and never saw the word "ATMOS"). I did download some demo files and detected a faint ATMOS effect when playing them through the system. There are two sound adjustments one may employ that attenuate the sound, they are called "SpaceFit" and "Adaptive". I am still trying to figure out what they do, although I did notice a slight echoing effect using Adaptive. The remote is small and sparsely populated with buttons, several of which have arcane double button presses for "hidden" functions. The mobile app is much better and quite handy - highly recommended. In sum, a great sounding system that's even better after break-in. I sincerely hope for better EQ capabilities in the future. ... show more

  • Should you pull the trigger?
After a week of use, I can tell you it is worth the money. Before this I was using a Yamaha system with tower speakers and a12” sub. That system was above and beyond anything my neighbors had. This system is even better. It can be crazy loud, or it can be crazy clear or it can be just crazy good. The satellite speakers are actually 6 speakers, not two. Each satellite has three speakers: forward, side and ceiling facing. The soundbar has side, angled, ceiling and forward facing speakers. (By the way, be sure not to push this soundbar under the tv. If you do, you’re blocking the upward facing speakers of the soundbar). For the first time my wife and I can turn off closed captioning because we can hear and understand what people are saying! Be sure to download the app. You can control all features of the speakers via the remote, but it’s way easier with the app. The bass unit that comes with this system is balanced. It doesn’t overwhelm but is clearly there. In the app there is “Night” mode. It reduces bass so that the sounds don’t travel as far. Great for apartments or roommates. Setup is a breeze, and you don’t need a separate amp. Just use the included HDMI cord to your tv. Read the quick start instructions and you will be watching movies as though you were in a theater. According to reviews I have seen, this is the king of soundbars. I believe it. Playing music from my phone is easy. I just select the soundbar from the casting menu. Well worth the money. ... show more

  • connection issues
this device has an unreliable connection with two different LG tvs I have tried it with. sounds great when it works, but when you turn the tv off and turn it back on later or the next day the dialogue sound is quiet and terrible. i have tried many ways to fix it, but the only way is to unplug the soundbar to get dialogue working again. so don't buy unless you like unplugging and plugging the device every day. ... show more

  • Solid #2 sound system
Like anything, you’re always skeptical, apprehensive and anxious about what you’re buying. When comparing sound systems, Sonos is top of the line, but this bad boy came in at a surprising number 2. The system itself is MASSIVE. The soundbar is really large so make sure you have the space! The speakers themselves are great but was disappointed they weren’t wireless, no big deal. That said, unboxing was pretty easy. The only thing I would suggest, Samsung needs to mark the cords, what goes where, etc. Outside of that, connecting this system to my Samsung tv was very easy, and if the lights are not solid blue, the connection is wrong. This was pretty much self explanatory but needs to be said. The system picks up sounds we didn’t ever hear! Rain, snow, wind, distant explosions, the millennium falcon racing through space. It makes the viewing experience so much better. For the price of nearly $900, IT IS A STEAL! If you can’t grab a Sonos, this is definitely a great secondary option, you will not be disappointed. ... show more

  • Great soundbar
This is an amazing soundbar. Voices are clear and legible, sound is incredible and the bass is very resonant. The rear speakers do a grest job and the atmos feature brings a whole new level to movies. The Q-Symphony feature significantly utilizes the tv speakers to enhance regular tv viewing. I really couldn't be happier with this purchase. ... show more

  • Another iffy glitchy soundbar from Samsung.
Updated: After months Samsung has finally released a solid update for this sound bar. DO NOT connect this thing to your Internet if you can help it. You’ll likely only regret it. If you need to update it use a computer and USB Flashdrive. Manually download the update and follow tge instructions. You may also need to update your speakers too. That is a completely separate process. A very annoying process overall, but so long as the update takes the bar will work very well. It even cleared up my eARC issues and I’m finally able to use that with my setup. It still cannot properly connect to any PC and should solely be used for sound from your Television and for consoles/blu-ray players. I just hope it lasts me a good while. Original: Samsung makes some truly stellar equipment but their soundbars have always been a bit iffy. First, there’s the terrible software app that automatically tries to update your firmware and fails 98% of the time. Leaving you a bricked system or a potentially glitchy one. Then there’s the connectivity. It’ll easily connect to anything mainstream you have. Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, AppleTV, etc. Great, it should. Anything unconventional however, that’s a different story. HDMI switch? Sure … most of the time. A PC however ... while modern PCs are capable of out performing this soundbars Video capabilities and matching its audio, every now and then the sound will cut, input will change and you’ll have no idea why. No clue what causes it. No clue if it’s a crappy CEC protocol, eARC or what, but it is infuriatingly annoying. So I may have a defective bar (same thing happened to another soundbar in my household) and I’ll likely need to sending it into Samsung for maintenance. Yay. The remote is basic AF, but that’s been the case with these systems since their inception. And this new button scheme on top of the bar itself is absolutely garbage. Seriously, I’m massively intuitive when is comes to electronics and I actually needed the manual to figure that nonsense out. But when the bar works, it’s fantastic. Truly beautiful audio with clear surround capabilities. But be aware, the bar itself is big. Nearly as wide as my 65” TV, but thankfully not too tall so the height for which my television stands above this matches perfectly. Overall it’s been about what I expected, which is iffy. Like I said I’ve own a few of their soundbars. In fact the one that I bought in 2011, still run perfectly and has never had to a problem. They truly don’t make them like they used to. No joke. But I got this one on sale so I was able to save a bit of money, however I’d say the value for that money still doesn’t quite match. For the price these things are asking, it should work perfectly and for at least 10+ years. No firmware updates needed. No confusion of how to work the dang things stupid interface directly on the bar. No need to resync the Bluetooth surround speakers (I had to for all of mine when I got it). Simple and easy to use but that’s asking too much and while this may be one of the best options out there, it’s certainly not the best experience. Now if I could only convince them to get ride of eARC, CEC and control through HDMI. They never work correctly and make everything worse the moment they activate. Absolute garbage idea to keep including those. But we all know that won’t happen and eventually every bar is gonna cone with AI built in and required internet connection so we can be advertised to constantly. Not looking for to the future that’s for sure. ... show more
