I only buy a new tv about every 10 years. The last time I bought one I got a mid-range Samsung, and I still love it. I had that tv on to provide background noise around the house an average of at least 6 hours/day. I played thousands of hours of video games and watched thousands of movies on that tv, and I never had a problem with it. That was enough to convince me to stick with Samsung. This time around I wanted something a little nicer, since I could afford it now. After looking at OLED TVs in Best Buy (which Samsung doesn’t produce) and looking at Samsung’s QLED TVs, my mind was made up. The OLED TVs looked nice, but this TV looked even nicer. (There’s a possibility that that is my affinity [read: bias] for Samsung speaking.) This tv was also significantly less expensive than comparable OLED TVs from big name manufacturers. In the end, I don’t feel like I compromised; I actually feel like I got away with something! The picture is breathtaking. The contrast between blacks and whites is unbelievable. The color is vivid. The remote is easy to use, though I do wish it had more function as a universal remote (controlling my DirecTV box isn’t really an option with the Samsung remote). The smart tv functions are so easy that I actually use them. I didn’t think I would ever use the Netflix or Amazon Video apps because my PS4 does all that stuff, but they’re so seamlessly integrated on this tv that’s actually easier to not use the PS4 for Netflix. A note about the size: A big part of the reason I upgraded from my old tv was that we sit 15 feet away from our television. Our old 50” tv was fine for that until I got a PS4 and found I couldn’t read the screen. We opted for the 75” model, and it is perfectly sized.

I had a 65" Samsung Q8fn purchased at Best Buy which I thought was great but I wanted a 75inch display. Best Buy no longer carried the 2018 Q8fn in any size so I decided to go with the 2019 Vizio Quantum X 75" because it got rave reviews. I thought the Vizio was very impressive when I was watching standard dynamic range material but when I put on some of my 4k HDR blu rays or streamed HDR the impact I remember seeing on my Q8fn was missing; the snap and contrast I was used to seeing on the Q8fn just wasn't there on the Vizio. I thought it might be the settings but even after I adjusted every picture setting I could think of it still didn't look as good as the Samsung Q8f. I'm a home theater buff and I have quite an advanced system and a library of approx. 263 titles so I used my excellent (Panasonic dp-ub820) player and compared 4 reference 4k HDR discs: Mad Max; Passengers; Spider Man and The Revenant and some HDR streaming; Carnival Row; Jack Ryan etc. and it was obvious the Samsung Q8fn has a crisper snappier image; sharper deeper contrast and deeper color in HDR. Now I will say that on standard dynamic range material I thought the Vizio was a bit better but I didn't buy a 4k hdr tv to watch standard dynamic stuff. It turned out that Amazon had the 75" Q8f available from Vann's so I bought it and I'm getting the same great picture from the 75 that I got from my 65 so I'm happy again. This is a great display as has been stated by many reviewers and I'm glad I was still able to get it. If I wanted to spend $3000 I could have gotten the newer Samsung Q80r but I've heard it doesn't have quite the contrast of the 2018 Q8f so that's my story!

This is a great tv. The picture is outstanding. The problem is that the motherboard fails and external device will not make the "handshake" to display a picture. I chalked the first failure up to faulty part. The second failure I installed tv, and cable box surge protectors. The third failure I installed surge protectors on the cable into the house and between the cable box and the tv. I had the first symptom of the total failure AGAIN today. No handshake on port #1. I switched to port #3 and expect it to fail very soon. I love Samsung products and have not had any issues with any of my other 8 Samsung tvs. I can only assume that there is a flaw in the motherboard on this particular tv. The model number is QN75Q8FN.

First of all it took over 2 weeks to get the TV (Samsung Q8, Flat, 75 inch) due to Amazon logistics and scheduling errors. Once i got it, i figured out that it does not support one connect box for this class of TV (surprising) and hence it is very thick. It makes no sense to me why they would make it so thick to accommodate back panel connectors (hdmi, usb, RF). Either way, once you put it on the wall, whether is 1" thick of 2" thick, you cant access the back anyway. Then i went thru minimal documentation which does state that the TV does not support one connect box. Then i figure out that the no gap wall mount does not work with TV (very minimal documentation on this). The thickness of this TV is lot more than Q7, 75 inch but when you hang it on the wall, it looks really good. I would prefer this thickness vs. Q7 or Q9 because of the way it sticks out. So, i am very happy with the end result. If you connect to a home theater receiver with HDMI ARC, when you use an app on the TV say netflix and then switch to Apple TV connected to the home theater receiver, 9 out of 10 times the HDMI ARC port will shut itself out. No matter what tricks you play, it is not possible to enable. HDMI ARC once again. I think the issue is with the TV but Samsung will not accept this mistake. The only workaround right now is to turn off Power to the entire home theater system (TV + Receiver+ connected devices) for about 10 second and turn it back on. It is very very annoying. The way i plan to solve this is by upgrading my Apple TV to 4K and forget about using any apps on the Samsung TV. That way, there is no need to support HDMI ARC. Picture quality is excellent, 5 stars for this. For some content, the dynamic mode colors look too saturated and looks artificial, so dialing it down is recommended. I cant figure out if HD content input is automatically upscaled to UHD or not. I love the ambient mode.
